At the beginnings of the funerary Megalithism in Iberia at Campo de Hockey necropolis

    Get PDF
The excavations undertaken at the Campo de Hockey site in 2008 led to the identification of a major Neolithic necropolis in the former Island of San Fernando (Bay of Cádiz). This work presents the results of the latest studies, which indicate that the site stands as one of the oldest megalithic necropolises in the Iberian Peninsula. The main aim of this work is to present with precision the chronology of this necropolis through a Bayesian statistical model that confirms that the necropolis was in use from c. 4300 to 3800 cal BC. The presence of prestige grave goods in the earliest and most monumental graves suggest that the Megalithism phenomenon emerged in relation to maritime routes linked to the distribution of exotic products. We also aim to examine funerary practices in these early megalithic communities, and especially their way of life and the social reproduction system. As such, in addition to the chronological information and the Bayesian statistics, we provide the results of a comprehensive interdisciplinary study, including anthropological, archaeometric and genetic data.We wish to express our gratitude to Antonio Sáez Espligares (Historical Museum of San Fernando) and Lourdes Lorenzo (Figlina, s.l.) for their support during the archaeological excavation. Particle Filter Tracking of Complex Stochastic Systems Applied to In Silico Wavefront Propagation

Proceeding of 2018 Computing in Cardiology Conference (CinC), September 23-26, 2018, Maastricht, The NetherlandsA high dimensional tracking system based on the FithzHugh-Nagumo (FH-N) equations emulating the biological excitation and propagation dynamics of the action potential across cardiac cells is proposed. The modified FH-N model tracks the electric cardiac wavefronts on a tissue, emulating an approximated atrial fibrillation scenario. Bayesian tracking is achieved with two particle filter (PF) schemes: a sequential Auxiliary PF (APF) and a parallelized method, Independent APF (IAPF). The numerical results of the two examples, involving both estimation errors and running times, provide numerical evidence that support the theoretical findings. This work has been partly supported by MINECO/FEDER (ADVENTURE, id. Four-body continuum-discretized coupled-channels calculations: Application to 6He+64Zn at 13.6 MeV

The recently developed four-body continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) method, making use of the binning procedure [1], is applied to the reaction 6He+64Zn at 13.6 MeV (around the Coulomb barrier). Excellent agreement with available elastic data [2] is found.Dirección General de Investigación Científica y Técnica FIS 2008-04189, FPA 2006- 13807-C02-01U.S. Department of Energy DE-AC52-07NA27344U.K. STFC EP/D00362

Stress estimation by the prefrontal cortex asymmetry: Study on fNIRS signals

sure the brain hemodynamic activity in applications to evaluate affective disorders and stress. Using two wavelengths of light, it is possible to monitor relative changes in the concentrations of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin. Besides, the spatial asymmetry in the prefrontal cortex activity has been correlated with the brain response to stressful situations. Methods: We measured prefrontal cortex activity with a NIRS multi-distance device during a baseline period, under stressful conditions (e.g., social stress), and after a recovery phase. We calculated a laterality index for the contaminated brain signal and for the brain signal where we removed the influence of extracerebral hemodynamic activity by using a short channel. Results: There was a significant right lateralization during stress when using the contaminated signals, consistent with previous investigations, but this significant difference disappeared using the corrected signals. Indeed, exploration of the susceptibility to contamination of the different channels showed non-homogeneous spatial patterns, which would hint at detection of stress from extracerebral activity from the forehead. Limitations: There was no recovery phase between the social and the arithmetic stressor, a cumulative effect was not considered. Conclusions: Extracerebral hemodynamic activity provided insights into the pertinence of short channel corrections in fNIRS studies dealing with emotions. It is important to consider this issue in clinical applications including modern monitoring systems based on fNIRS technique to assess emotional states in affective disorders

Object-Oriented Modeling and Simulation of the Arterial Pressure Control System by Using MODELICA

The modeling of physiological control systems via mathematical equations reflects the calculation procedure more than the structure of the real system modeled, and several simulation environment have been used so far for this task. Nevertheless, object-oriented modeling is spreading in current simulation environments through the use of the individual components of the model and its interconnections to define the underlying dynamic equations. In this paper we describe the use of the MODELICATM simulation environment in the object-oriented modeling of the cardiovascular control system. The performance of the controlled system has been analyzed by object-oriented simulation in the light of existing hypothesis and physiological data used here for validation purposes

SABIO: Soft Agent for Extended Information Retrieval

    Get PDF
In the current study, an integrated system called SABIO is presented. The current system applies Information Retrieval (IR) techniques developed for collections of textual documents to nontextual corpa. SABIO integrates a fuzzy logic-based procedure for IR. Its search algorithm improves the IR efficiency and decreases the computational burden by using a fuzzy logic-based procedure for IR. This procedure is integrated in a flexible and fault-tolerant, human-reasoning-based search algorithm. The Accumulated Knowledge Set (AKS) of the system is sorted in a hierarchic multilevel tree-structure-like ontology. The objects in the AKS are represented using a novel human-reasoning-based-method. This representation takes into account the occurrence of related terms. The system uses a novel fuzzy logic-based term-weighting (TW) method. The developed fuzzy logic method improves the classical term frequency–inverse document frequency (TF=IDF) method, generally used for TW. The abovementioned system is the core of a wizard for search into the website of the University of Seville, www.us.es, which is currently in testing

[EN] This article intends to give an understanding of the process of research into cement materials, focussed on 3D printing. A group of four students at the Universitat Polit.cnica de Val.ncia – three architectural engineers and one electronic and automotive industrial engineer, spent three years researching and developing both a mobile 3D printing device; and a cement material to be extruded by this device and be capable of modelling any type of figure with FDM technology. The main objective of this research is the application of this new construction system to the house-building and real estate sector; reducing occupational hazards, costs and waste material.[ES] En el presente artículo se pretende dar a conocer el proceso de investigación sobre materiales cementicios enfocados a la impresión 3D.
