    Innovación docente mediante la creación de recursos visuales para el aprendizaje de las ciencias geológicas

    En el contexto de los proyectos “Redes de investigación en docencia universitaria de la Universidad de Alicante”, se ha creado la red Banco de imágenes de minerales y rocas. El objetivo es elaborar un banco de imágenes empleando los materiales de las colecciones docentes de mineralogía y petrología, para usarlo como herramienta docente en todos los Grados que imparten alguna asignatura de Geología, así como en los cursos del Grado en Geología. En esta fase de la red, se establecen las pautas para la elaboración del material, utilizando los más altos criterios de calidad en las imágenes obtenidas. Se determina cuál es el instrumental más adecuado para la obtención de las imágenes, el cual depende de las condiciones de la muestra cuya imagen se pretende obtener. Además cada muestra presenta diferentes requisitos de iluminación, que son establecidos tras la realización de numerosos ensayos. Para la obtención de pequeños detalles, se hace uso de instrumental específico (microscopios compuestos y de polarización o lupas) que requiere de adaptadores especiales para poder obtener las imágenes. Una vez creado el banco de imágenes se elaborarán recursos didácticos específicos, como guiones de prácticas, manuales, páginas web y otros recursos que permitan el autoaprendizaje del alumno

    Aesthetic Quality Properties of Carbonate Breccias Associated with Textural and Compositional Factors: Marrón Emperador Ornamental Stone (Upper Cretaceous, Southeast Spain)

    The aesthetic properties of ornamental stones, including colour, texture, and the presence or absence of discontinuities, are influential in their use and marketing. This is particularly critical in brecciated rocks such as the Marrón Emperador (ME) ornamental stone, a dark brown breccia dolostone (Upper Cretaceous, southeast Spain). ME shows a high chromatic and textural variability, which is one of its most appreciated commercial features. Through a petrographic, mineralogical, geochemical and colourimetric study of samples obtained from quarries, outcrops and/or drilling cores, several quality categories have been established, as well as the relationship between the aesthetic properties of ME ornamental stone with its compositional and textural factors. Three main types of breccia constitute the ME exploitable lithotect: crackle and mosaic packbreccias, and rubble floatbreccias. Breccia clasts are mainly composed of hypidiotopic-idiotopic medium- to coarsely-crystalline dolosparites, microcrystalline dolosparites and dolomicrites. Results show that diagenetic processes are mainly responsible for the colour of ME dolostones, revealing that the Sr content is a key factor. The darker brown dolomites always show a higher Sr content, where other typical chromophore elements in dolomites, such as Fe and Mn, do not present this correlation. This study provides evidence for the complexity of processes and factors that are responsible for aesthetic quality features in ornamental stones

    Efficacy of Photobiomodulation Therapy in the Treatment of Pain and Inflammation: A Literature Review

    The main objective of this literature review was to analyze the efficacy of (PBM) therapy application on subjects with chronic pain and inflammation, and furthermore, to evaluate the methodological quality of the collected literature. The search was conducted using five databases: PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, Web of Science, and PEDro. The keywords “low level laser therapy”, “chronic pain”, and “inflammation” provided the selection of RCTs that were published within the last 5 years, conducted in humans, and written in English. The PEDro Internal Validity Scale (IVS) checklist was used to evaluate the risk of bias in the included studies. A total of 11 articles were selected, all of them RCTs. Of the articles, five showed that PBM positively influences chronic pain, while another showed the same but only in the short term. In two other articles, the patient’s inflammation improved markedly. In one article there was no improvement in chronic pain and in another, there was no improvement in inflammation. Four articles demonstrated that PBM is beneficial in acute pain. Furthermore, six studies were given an “excellent” score and the remaining five a “good” score based on the IVS. Photobiomodulation has beneficial effects on chronic pain and inflammation, although more research needs to be completed in this line for this to be clarified as the existence of RCTs on this subject is limited.University Chair in Clinical Psychoneuroimmunology (University of Granada and PNI Europe

    Tectono-Sedimentary Evolution of the Madrid Basin (Spain) during the Late Miocene: Data from Paleokarst Profiles in Diagenetically-Complex Continental Carbonates

    An intra-Vallesian (Upper Miocene) paleokarst developed at the top of the Intermediate Miocene Unit in the continental intracratonic Madrid Basin is recognized. This paleokarst is an early shallow, tabular-shaped karst that shows a marked control by the depositional facies pattern and lithologies. By integrating morphological, petrological, and geochemical data, three hydrogeological zones were established throughout the paleokarstic profiles: (i) a paleo-vadose zone, characterized by vertically elongated caves and vadose cementation; (ii) a 3–7 m thick paleo-epiphreatic zone (paleo-water table fringe), with development of stratiform breccia bodies, the superimposition of both vadose and phreatic features, and the lowest Fe and Mn contents in host-rock carbonates; and (iii) a paleo-phreatic zone characterized by an increase in δ13C values and the predominance of phreatic cementation. The paleogeographic reconstruction for the intra-Vallesian paleokarst using profiles revealed relative topographic highs to the north and topographic lows to the south, drawing the paleokarst landscape. Immediately overlaying the paleokarst surface are fluvio-lacustrine facies belonging to the Miocene Upper Unit (Late Vallesian to Late Turolian). Their lowermost deposits consist of fluvial terrigenous facies deposited by approximately N–S fluvial streams, and pass upward into fluvio-lacustrine fresh-water limestones. This paleokarstic surface represents a major change in the evolution of sedimentary patterns of basin, from endorheic to exorheic conditions, as the result of a change from compressive to extensional conditions in the tectonic regime.This study was supported with funding provided by Research Group VIGROB-095 of the University of Alicante and projects PB89-0032 and PB89-0047 of the Government of Spain

    Fish skin grafts versus standard of care on wound healing of chronic diabetic foot ulcers: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    This study will explore the effectiveness of fish skin grafts (FSG) in ulcer healing in diabetic foot disease compared to standard of care (SOC). The systematic review and meta-analysis were performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standard. The electronic databases of PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science (WoS) internet were searched for the outcome rate of complete ulcer healing. The risk of bias assessment was conducted using the tool recommended by the Cochrane Collaboration. Statistical analysis included the individual and combined result of the studies, heterogeneity test, the effect size, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias tests. Five randomised controlled trials (RCTs) with a total of 411 patients were included in this study. This meta-analysis showed a higher rate of complete ulcer healing in groups receiving fish skin grafts (OR = 3.34, 95% CI 2.14–5.20, p < 0.01, I2 = 0%) compared to control groups. Fish skin grafts have been shown to be more effective for achieving complete ulcer healing compared to current conventional treatments in diabetic foot disease.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBU

    A method for estimating the age of people in forensic medicine using multivariable statistics

    The present study seeks to generate a regression model that allows estimating the age of individuals in the city of Barranquilla (Colombia) from the stages of people’s teeth, in order to generate a tool to help forensic doctors in the identification of bodies in a high degree of decomposition. The model showed that sex and teeth 23, 27, 38, and 47 have a statistically significant relationship with age, and although the model has a medium level of explanation (adjusted R-square of 56%), it is a very useful tool for estimating the age of the inhabitants of Barranquilla given that the current standards are based on studies carried out in other countries with genotypic and phenotypic characteristics that differ from Barranquilla people

    Micromorphological Study of Site Formation Processes at El Sidrón Cave (Asturias, Northern Spain): Encrustations over Neanderthal Bones

    El Sidrón Cave is an archaeological and anthropological reference site of the Neanderthal world. It shows singular activity related to cannibalisation, and all existing processes are relevant to explain the specific behaviour of the concerned individuals. This paper presents geoarchaeological data, primarily based on mineralogical and petrographic techniques, from an investigation of the nature of the encrustations or hard coatings that affect a large part of the Neanderthal bone remains and their relationship with the depositional and post-depositional processes at the archaeological site. Crusts and patina were found to be numerous and diverse, mainly composed of calcite and siliciclastic grains, with different proportions and textures. The analysis indicated different origins and scenarios from their initial post-mortem accumulation to the final deposit recovered during the archaeological work. The presence of micromorphological features, such as clotted-peloidal micrite, needle-fibre calcite (NFC) aggregates, clay coatings, iron–manganese impregnation, and/or adhered aeolian dust may indicate that a significant proportion of the remains were affected by subaerial conditions in a relatively short period of time in a shelter, cave entrance, or shallower level of the karstic system, prior to their accumulation in the Ossuary Gallery.This work has been supported since 1999 through different research contracts between the Government of the Principality of Asturias, the University of Oviedo, the University of Alicante, the National Museum of Natural Sciences (CSIC, Madrid), and the University of Salamanca
