    1998 fisheries statistics, Lake Kariba - Zimbabwe shore

    The report contains data, statistics and information for both the pelagic and inshore fisheries of Lake Kariba for the year 1998. Time series data and notes for the 2 fisheries are included. The pelagic fishery exploits kapenta, the freshwater sardine Limnothrissa miodon, and is carried out all year round using light for attracting the fish. Two types of fishing vessel designs are in use (the pontoon-catamarans and the displacement monohulls) and the type of gear used is the lift net. The inshore fishery distinguishes the fishery that uses gillnets and exploits the indigenous Zambezi River fish species. This fishery is restricted to the lakeshore and uses 3 types of boats - the dugout canoe, fibreglass and metal boats

    Not Mere Lexicographic Cosmetics: The Compilation and Structural Features of Isichazamazwi SezoMculo

    Abstract: This article offers a brief overview of the compilation of the Ndebele music terms dictionary, Isichazamazwi SezoMculo (henceforth the ISM), paying particular attention to its structural features. It empha-sises that the reference needs of the users as well as their reference skills should be given a determining role in all lexicographic decisions leading to the publication of a dictionary. Dictionary structure should, there-fore, be conceived and evaluated in terms of its data constituents and the accessibility of these data. Accord-ingly, this article demonstrates that the structure of the ISM is not a case of mere cosmetics but a lexico-graphic mode of communication between the dictionary compilers and users who are participants in a lexi-cographic communication process. In this way, the article highlights some of the challenges encountered during the compilation of the ISM and the strategies the compilers employed to facilitate the communication process between the lexicographers and the users regarding dictionary contents and the arrangement thereof. From such a perspective, this article may provide useful insights for LSP lexicography in African languages, prospects of which are based on the increased need for knowledge acquisition and dissemination as well as the multilingual nature of African societies

    This article focuses on the methodological lessons from Sam Moyo’s scholarship. Sam’s research is characterised by a combination of detailed empirical investigation, deep knowledge of the technical and practical aspects of agricultural production and farming livelihoods, and bigpicture political economy analysis and theory. Sam’s method is an insightful contemporary application of the method originally set out in Marx’s Grundrisse. Many contemporary explorations of agrarian political economy fail to sustain the important tension and dialectical debate, between diverse empirical realities and their ‘multiple determinations and relations’ and wider theorisation of the ‘concrete’ features of emergent processes of change. The implications of Sam’s methodological approach for the analysis of Zimbabwe’s land reform are discussed, especially in relation to the land occupations and the politics of agrarian reform since 2000

    The report provides catch records for the kapenta (Limnothrissa miodon) and inshore fisheries in the Zimbabwean waters of Lake Kariba for the year 1997. Kapenta usually constitute about 94% of the total catch from Lake Kariba; for statistical purposes catches are recorded for the 5 hydrological basins - Mlibizi, Binga, Sengwa, Bumi and Kariba. The kapenta, which occupy the open pelagic waters of the lake, represent a unit stock which is harvested by both Zimbabwe and Zambia; the artisanal fishery exploits inshore species which generally occupy water less than 10m deep along the shoreline. The Zambian and Zimbabwean inshore fisheries may therefore be considered to be exploiting 2 separate stocks. The main species in the inshore fishery are Oreochromis mortimeri, Sargochromis codringtonii, Tilapia rendalli, Labeo altivelis, Hydrocynus vittatus, Mormyrus longirostris, M.anguilloides and Clarias gariepinus

    Analysis of Essential Elements for Plants Growth Using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis

    In this study, a total of ten essential elements for plants growth in the Guinea savanna region of Niger State in Northern Nigeria have been identified in the soils using instrumental neutron activation analysis. The experimental results show good agreement with certified or literature values within the agreed percentage range of ±2.35% to ±8.69%. However, the concentration distributions of the ten identified elements in the soil samples within the studied area for plants growth revealed the following: Fe (123.4 ppm), Mn (2100.7 ppm), K (5544.3 ppm), Al (54752.4 ppm), Ti (3082.9 ppm), Ca (4635 ppm), V (54.3 ppm), Na (857.5 ppm), Mg (13924.1 ppm), and Dy (12.1 ppm). A further analysis of the two fundamental soil physical parameters for healthy growth of some common crops like egusimelon, groundnut, rice, yams, soybeans, cassava, and potato analyzed in this work revealed a pH range of 4.0 pH–8.0 pH and a temperature range of 28.0°C to 29.3°C, which are optimal for plant nutrients availability in the soils within the study area

    Physiological parameters of seed vigour in ex situ stored sorghum germplasm

    Viability and vigour are seed quality parameters that affect the seed chain. Seed vigour is a measure of accumulated damage in seed as viability declines from physiological maturity. This study aimed at determining the seed vigour of various sorghum genotypes stored ex situ for 10 years using the Heat Shock Stress Test (HSST), Cold Test (CT), Standard Germination Test (SGT) and field germination. The samples from the regeneration trial were kept in ex situ storage at 0-4°C and 40% relative humidity from 2003 to 2014. The experiments were arranged in a completely randomised design with four replication and differences in radicle length, shoot length for the 65 genotypes evaluated at 5% level of significance. An unpaired T- test was used to compare the accuracy of the quality methods in predicting field emergence. All the evaluated genotypes responded differentially to all the vigour test methods. There were significant differences (P<0.01) in the performance of genotypes with respect to radical and shoot length in response to the CT, HSST and the SGT. The results of CT and HSST predicted field emergence better than the standard germination test. None of the quality test methods and a strong and significant correlation with field emergence. Genotypes IS 30260 and IS 34637 were vigourous as they had the highest shoot length of 43.75 and 42.38 mm and IS 30063 had 45.52 mm in root length after 48 h of incubation. Overall, this study showed that field emergence of sorghum cannot be accurately predicted from a standard germination, HSST and CT

    Modelling of natural fire occurrences : a case of South Africa

    Abstract: In contemporary literature there have been growing concerns regarding preservations of natural ecosystems. Given the global growth in awareness of global warming, the need for natural fire prediction models has grown rapidly. Using South Africa as a case study, we evaluate the potential of integrating several natural fire prediction models and geographical information system (GIS) platforms. Initially, natural fire prone regions in South Africa were spatially demarcated basing on municipal historical data records. Thereafter, the natural fire prediction models were applied/tested in parallel to identify the best prediction models that give optimum results in predicting natural fires. The models were assessed for accuracy using historical data. Preliminary results reveal locations in the North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo province had the highest recorded potential for natural fires. In conclusion, the work demonstrates huge potential of prediction models in informing the likelihood of natural fire outbreaks. Lastly, the work recommends the adoption of natural fire prediction models and the subsequent formulation and use of relevant future natural fire mitigation policies and techniques to avert disasters in time

    Morphometric and morphological analysis of indigenous Matabele goats of Zimbabwe

    This study aimed to characterize Matabele goats based on their qualitative and quantitative traits, to facilitate their genetic improvement and conservation. Data were collected from 120 goats over 12 months, comprising 20 males and 100 females using a stratified random sampling approach. Body weight and various body measurements were recorded. Five growth curve estimation models were employed to describe the growth pattern of Matabele goats. Descriptive statistics were computed for both qualitative and quantitative traits. Ttests were conducted to assess the impact of sex on morphometric measurements in different age groups. The results revealed an average body weight of 20.93 kg, with significant sex-related differences (p < 0.05) observed across all quantitative traits. Most goats displayed horned and bearded characteristics, while black and white coat colours were predominant. Among the growth curve models, the Gompertz model exhibited the highest R2 value (0.992). Notably, the study found relatively low average morphometric measurements and body weight for Matabele goats, emphasizing the urgent need for genetic improvement efforts and the development of comprehensive breeding standards for this breed

    Properties of Mosquito Repellent-Plasticized Poly(lactic acid) Strands

    This article belongs to the Special Issue Thermal and Rheological Characterization of Polymeric Materials[Abstract] Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is an attractive candidate for replacing petrochemical polymers because it is fully biodegradable. This study investigated the potential of PLA as a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative material that can be developed into commercially viable wearable mosquito repellent devices with desirable characteristics. PLA strands containing DEET and IR3535 were prepared by twin screw extrusion compounding and simultaneously functioned as plasticizers for the polymer. The plasticizing effect was investigated by thermal and rheological studies. DSC studies showed that the addition of DEET and IR3535 into PLA strands reduced the glass transition temperature consistent with predictions of the Fox equation, thus proving their efficiency as plasticizers. The rheology of molten samples of neat PLA and PLA/repellents blends, evaluated at 200 °C, was consistent with shear-thinning pseudoplastic behaviour. Raman studies revealed a nonlinear concentration gradient for DEET in the PLA strand, indicating non-Fickian Type II transport controlling the desorption process. Release data obtained at 50 °C showed initial rapid release followed by a slower, near constant rate at longer times.
