The supercuspidal representations of p-adic classical groups

Let G be a unitary, symplectic or special orthogonal group over a locally compact non-archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic. We construct many new supercuspidal representations of G, and Bushnell-Kutzko types for these representations. Moreover, we prove that every irreducible supercuspidal representation of G arises from our constructions.Comment: 55 pages -- minor changes from 1st version (mostly in sections 2.2, 4.2 and 6.2). CFA Or CFP: A Guide For Professors

    Get PDF
The CFA Institute and the CFP Board of Standards provide professional certifications in the field of finance. In this paper, I provide my experience with the CFA and CFP programs in order to give other professors some insight into the process of attaining the designations. I hope to provide answers to some of the questions that other faculty members may have about attaining these professional designations and that my experiences will assist others in determining which, if either, of these designations to seek. This information may also be valuable to business school and economics professors who may be counseling students about these programs

Addressing the Phenomena of Nursing Burnout: Seeking the Need for Mental Health Interventions to Support the Nursing Workforce

    Get PDF
Problem: Nursing burnout has been an existing phenomenon, which the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated. Burnout has contributed to escalated mental health concerns, increased staff turnover rates, and the nationwide nursing shortage. Context: Studies indicate that depression, anxiety, and stress significantly correlate to burnout; studies also reveal that burnout consequently contributes to job dissatisfaction and organizational turnover. To reduce perceived burnout and increase nurse retention at the ambulatory COVID-19 clinics, nurses completed a pilot program that integrated two mental health tools. Intervention: Nurses responded to a pre-survey to identify burnout factors and measure perceived burnout, using a modification of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) tool. Then, nurses participated in the pilot program incorporating daily team temperature checks during mid-shift huddles with an assigned Mental Health Champion for the duration of one workweek. After completion, nurses responded to a post-survey to reevaluate perceived burnout. Measures: The project measured changes in perceived burnout measurement scores by evaluating pre and post-survey responses pertaining to the CBI. The project also assessed the nurses\u27 endorsement of Mental Health Champions and team temperature checks. Results: The contributing reasons leading to nursing burnout were attributed to shift workload, unsafe staffing, high-stress environment, and emotional strain. Results from the post-survey indicate a decrease in perceived burnout measurement scores; results from the post-survey also suggest that most surveyed nurses favored the interventions. Conclusions: Institutions are urged to consider these interventions to promote their staff\u27s mental health and well-being, thus improving workplace culture and staff retention rates

Rich Family, Poor Family: Investment Portfolios And Case Studies From USA Today

    Get PDF
Case studies have become an integral part of the business education curriculum. However, opportunities to use this approach in financial planning are limited because of the lack of cases about individual investors. Although parents could share their finances with their children, a brief survey we conducted indicates that our students are not getting the opportunity to examine the personal financial information of their family members or friends either. This void is leaving students unprepared to enter into careers in financial planning and brokerage. This paper discusses the use of a long-running monthly column from USA Today entitled Your Portfolio, which provides cases on individual investing. The articles can be used to provide students with the opportunity to view the real-world financial circumstances of a range of individuals and to analyze and recommend the best course of action

Nerds: A Case Study Of The PC Industry

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the use of a PBS video, Triumph of the Nerds, as a video case study of the personal computer industry. The program traces the birth of the microcomputer industry through interviews with the founders of the industry, including Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Steve Jobs and Gordon Moore. The video is more than an entertaining look at the personal computer industry, but also provides numerous lessons on topics such as protecting intellectual property, strategic alliances, disruptive innovations, competitive strategy, marketing and entrepreneurship

Computing Realized Compound Yield With A Financial Calculator: A Note

This note points out that realized compound yield (RCY) has a similar concept from capital budgeting; namely, modified internal rate of return.  Recognizing this relationship makes it easier to teach the concept and allows students to easily compute RCY using a financial calculator.

The sexual health needs of looked after young people; findings from qualitative interviews led through public health and health psychology.

    Get PDF
Background - Looked after young people (LAYP) have poorer sexual health outcomes than their peers. However, research seldom examines the health needs of, or intervenes with, this group. The aim of the current study was to identify LAYP's perceived sexual health needs and explore sources of sexual health information, knowledge levels, concerns and service preferences. Methods - Looked after young people within Fife, Scotland, were recruited through their workers and carers to participate in qualitative semi-structured interviews. Those aged 12–19 years were targeted for recruitment. National Health Services ethics approval was granted. Thematic analysis was conducted using NVivo. Results - Interviews were conducted with 10 LAYP. Key themes included gaps in knowledge, and gaps between knowledge and behaviour. Being ‘looked after’ may have negative consequences on knowledge, sources of support and safer sex. A flexible, one-to-one service, aimed at several lifestyle issues, not solely sexual health, was preferred by respondents. Conclusion - Looked after young people require support to bridge the gap between knowledge and behaviour and several theories relevant to the findings have been identified. Participants desired more support around a range of health issues, which may come from school, workers and carers, as well as health professionals. Further research examining effective interventions with this group is crucial to improve outcomes

Breast MRI: State of the Art

    Get PDF
Contains fulltext : 208973.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)MRI of the breast has the highest sensitivity for breast cancer detection among current clinical imaging modalities and is indispensable for breast imaging practice. While the basis of breast MRI consists of T1-weighted contrast-enhanced imaging, T2-weighted, ultrafast, and diffusion-weighted imaging may be used to improve lesion characterization. Such multiparametric assessment of breast lesions allows for excellent discrimination between benign and malignant breast lesions. Indications for breast MRI are expanding. In preoperative staging, multiple studies confirm the superiority of MRI to other imaging modalities for tumor size estimation and detection of additional tumor foci in the ipsilateral and contralateral breast. Ongoing studies show that in experienced hands this can be used to improve breast cancer surgery, although there is no evidence of improved long-term outcomes. Screening indications are likewise growing as evidence is accumulating that OncologicRI depicts cancers at an earlier stage than mammography in all women. To manage the associated costs for screening, the use of abbreviated protocols may be beneficial. In patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, MRI is used to document response. It is essential to realize that oncologic and surgical response are different, and evaluation should be adapted to the underlying question

Contrast-enhanced MRI for breast cancer screening

Contains fulltext : 208984.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)Multiple studies in the first decade of the 21(st) century have established contrast-enhanced breast MRI as a screening modality for women with a hereditary or familial increased risk for the development of breast cancer. In recent studies, in women with various risk profiles, the sensitivity ranges between 81% and 100%, which is approximately twice as high as the sensitivity of mammography. The specificity increases in follow-up rounds to around 97%, with positive predictive values for biopsy in the same range as for mammography. MRI preferentially detects the more aggressive/invasive types of breast cancer, but has a higher sensitivity than mammography for any type of cancer. This performance implies that in women screened with breast MRI, all other examinations must be regarded as supplemental. Mammography may yield ~5% additional cancers, mostly ductal carcinoma in situ, while slightly decreasing specificity and increasing the costs. Ultrasound has no supplemental value when MRI is used. Evidence is mounting that in other groups of women the performance of MRI is likewise superior to more conventional screening techniques. Particularly in women with a personal history of breast cancer, the gain seems to be high, but also in women with a biopsy history of lobular carcinoma in situ and even women at average risk, similar results are reported. Initial outcome studies show that breast MRI detects cancer earlier, which induces a stage-shift increasing the survival benefit of screening. Cost-effectiveness is still an issue, particularly for women at lower risk. Since costs of the MRI scan itself are a driving factor, efforts to reduce these costs are essential. The use of abbreviated MRI protocols may enable more widespread use of breast MRI for screening. Level of Evidence: 1 Technical Efficacy: Stage 5 J. Magn. Reson. Imaging 2019;50:377-390
