    New treatment options in the management of glioblastoma multiforme: a focus on bevacizumab

    Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common malignant primary brain tumor in adults and carries the poorest prognosis. Despite recent progress in molecular biology, neuro-imaging and neuro-surgical care, the management of patients with GBM continues to harbor significant challenges. Survival after diagnosis is poor even with the most aggressive approach using multimodality therapy. Although the etiology of malignant gliomas is not known, the dependency of tumor growth on angiogenesis has identified this pathway as a promising therapeutic target. Bevacizumab was the first antiangiogenic therapy approved for use in cancer and received accelerated Food and Drug Administration approval for the treatment of recurrent GBM in 2009, the first new drug for this disease in over a decade. This review describes the rationale behind the treatment of GBM with bevacizumab. The pharmacology, efficacy, safety and tolerability of bevacizumab will also be reviewed

    Colors and K-Band Counts of Extremely Faint Field Galaxies

    We combine deep K-band (Keck) with V- and I-band (NTT) observations of two high-Galactic latitude fields, surveying a total of ~2 sq. arcmin. The K-band galaxy counts continue to rise above K=22, reaching surface densities of few x 10^5 per sq. degree. The slope for the counts is (d log(N) per mag per sq. degree) = 0.23 +/- 0.02 between K=18-23, consistent with other deep K surveys. The numbers of galaxies in each mag bin is about two times greater than the galaxy counts of Djorgovski et al. (1995). The optical and near infrared magnitudes of all objects detected in the V+I+K image are discussed in the context of grids of isochrone synthesis galaxy evolutionary models (Bruzual & Charlot 1993, 1995). The colors of most of the observed galaxies are consistent with a population drawn from a broad redshift distribution. A few galaxies at K=19-20 are red in both colors (V-I>3; I-K>2), consistent with being early-type galaxies having undergone a burst of star formation at z>5 and viewed at z~1. At K>20, we find ~8 ``red outlier'' galaxies with I-K>4 and V-I<2.5, whose colors are difficult to mimic by a single evolving or non-evolving stellar population at any redshift. They are likely either low-metallicity, dusty dwarf galaxies, or old galaxies at high redshift (z>1.2). Their surface density is several per square arcminute, which is so high that they are probably common objects of low luminosity L<L∗L<L_*.Comment: 28 pages, 9 Figures (2 Plates), uses aaspp4.sty. Here we present data from 582 individual trees of eight taxa in the form of summary variables relating to the allometric relationships between trunk diameter, height, crown height, crown radius and trunk radial growth rate to the tree's light environment and diameter at breast height. In addition the raw data files containing the variables from which the summary data were obtained. Large sample sizes with longitudinal data spanning 22 years make these datasets useful for future studies concerned with the way trees change in size and shape over their life-span

    Rough grazing in Greece cover about 40% of the total land area, is publicly owned and managed extensively (Hadjigeorgiou et al., 2002). The Prefecture of Larisa is in the centre of Greece, and has 212,000 ha of rough grazing land, with a variable topography ranging from sea level up to 3,000 m a.s.l. This area is utilized by a total population of 135,000 LU (mainly sheep, goats and some suckler cows), which consumes annually an appreciable fraction of their total nutrient requirements from rough grazing

    Seasonal variation of macro- and micro- nutrients in leaves of fig (Ficus carica L.) under Mediterranean conditions

    Leaves of ‘Smyrna’ fig (Ficus carica L.), variety ‘Smyrneiki’, were collected at four stages of the annual growth cycle, namely (1) at flowering, (2) during fruit development, (3) at fruit maturity and (4) after fruit harvest, during two consecutive years (2018 and 2019) and the leaf macro-(N, P, K, Ca, Mg) and micro-(Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, B) nutrient concentrations were determined. Mean concentrations of N, P, K, Ca and Mg ranged between 14.4–28.6, 0.5–1.7, 2–31.2, 22–80.3 and 2.1–6.7 g kg-1 (on a dry weight basis-d.w.), respectively, while concentrations of Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, and B, ranged between 84–280, 11–70, 2–86, 40–206, and 18–39 mg kg-1 d.w., respectively. The mean leaf concentration of N decreased significantly at each successive growth stage, whereas those of P, K, Fe and Zn, also decreased progressively, but not always to a statistically significant level between each stage. In contrast, the mean leaf concentration of Ca increased significantly throughout the season, while the concentrations of Mg and Cu also increased, but not to a statistically significant level at each stage. The Mn concentration of fig leaves decreased significantly at fruit maturity, then increased significantly after fruit harvest. Overall, the nutrient concentration of fig leaves varies throughout the period from flowering to fruit harvest, suggesting that trees may need different amounts of nutrients depending on the developmental stage. The seasonal variation of the nutrient concentration in fig leaves confirmed the need for reference values for each phenological stage for leaf analysis interpretation and for developing an efficient fertilization program

    State–of–the–art report on nonlinear representation of sources and channels

    This report consists of two complementary parts, related to the modeling of two important sources of nonlinearities in a communications system. In the first part, an overview of important past work related to the estimation, compression and processing of sparse data through the use of nonlinear models is provided. In the second part, the current state of the art on the representation of wireless channels in the presence of nonlinearities is summarized. In addition to the characteristics of the nonlinear wireless fading channel, some information is also provided on recent approaches to the sparse representation of such channels

    A Strong-Lens Survey in AEGIS: the influence of large scale structure

    We report on the results of a visual search for galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses over 650 arcmin^2 of HST/ACS imaging in the DEEP2-EGS field. In addition to a previously-known Einstein Cross (the "Cross," HST J141735+52264, with z_lens=0.8106 and a published z_source=3.40), we identify two new strong galaxy-galaxy lenses with multiple extended arcs. The first, HST J141820+52361 (the ``Dewdrop''; z_lens=0.5798, lenses two distinct extended sources into two pairs of arcs z_source=0.while), 9818 the second, HST J141833+52435 (the ``Anchor''; z_lens=0.4625), produces a single pair of arcs (source redshift not yet known). All three definite lenses are fit well by simple singular isothermal ellipsoid models including external shear. Using the three-dimensional line-of-sight (LOS) information on galaxies from the DEEP2 data, we calculate the convergence and shear contributions, assuming singular isothermal sphere halos truncated at 200 h^-1 kpc. These are also compared against three-dimensional local-density estimates. We find that even strong lenses in demonstrably underdense local environments may be considerably affected by LOS contributions, which in turn, may be underestimates of the effect of large scale structure.Comment: ApJ Letters, submitted.
