First Place, Denman Undergraduate Research ForumSalmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi), the causative agent of Typhoid Fever in humans, persists in the gallbladder of 3-5% of hosts after resolution of acute infection. In this chronic carrier state, S. Typhi forms biofilms on the surface of gallstones. This study utilized a screen of 90 kinase inhibitor compounds for in vitro anti-biofilm activity against a model organism, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium), and further characterized a promising lead: T315. T315 has anti-cancer properties and has been demonstrated to disrupt the PI3K/AKT pathway, which contributes to cancer progression. The effects of T315 on S. Typhimurium biofilm formation were analyzed using rapid attachment, viability, EC50, and biofilm dispersion assays. The compound does not exhibit bactericidal activity against S. Typhimurium, yet inhibits biofilm formation by 59.4 percent, with an EC50 of 4.61 μM. Delaying drug administration permitted assessment of biofilm inhibitory activity at varying timepoints and showed that the compound interferes specifically with the earliest stages of bacterial surface attachment. T315 is being derivatized and these compounds will be screened to identify those with a lower EC50. Additionally, we are identifying the bacterial target of this compound via direct pull-down with T315 that has been biotinylated using click-chemistry. The discovery and characterization of compounds with the ability to specifically inhibit early events in bacterial attachment will aid future studies of Salmonella biofilm formation and is a promising step towards eradication of the Salmonella chronic carriage state.National Institutes of HealthSOLAR Research FundOSU Undergraduate Education Summer Research Fellowship ProgramOSU Biofilms in Human Medicine GroupOSU Public Health Preparedness for Infectious DiseaseOSU Dean's Discovery ProgramA three-year embargo was granted for this item.Academic Major: Microbiolog

Yoga: Sport or Spirituality? : A comparison of practitioners' views and practices at SATS, Norway with yoga literature

Master's thesis Global Studies. VID Specialized University, Stavanger, December 2019In YOGA SUTRAS, Patanjali defines yoga as “yogas chitta vritti nirodhah, Yoga is the restriction of the movement of the mind” (Philosophy of yoga, 2018, p. 80). It is important to understand YOGA SUTRAS starts with this sutra, and perhaps Patanjali offers the whole meaning of yoga within these three words. However, the important thing we want to concentrate on is that Patanjali words are only concentrated on the mind and have nothing at all to do with modern poses of yoga, and it is mostly the yoga of the mind and not the body (Philosophy of yoga, 2018, p. 81). Therefore we should ask where all these difficult poses in modern yoga come from? and where is the place of the mind, spirituality and traditions? Is there any connection between modern physical yoga and the ancient yoga of the mind? In the classical texts, yoga mainly acts as a means to still the mind and support atman individual souls attaining Brahman. However, in the modern era, the word yoga has been given new interpretations. In the Encyclopedia of Religion, Mircea Eliade explains yoga in the following way, “yoga derives from the root yuj, meaning to bind together, hold fast or yoke. Yoga means union; to unite body and mind” (Encyclopedia of Religion, Eliade, entry of Yoga). What is yoga truly for Norwegians? Spirituality, sport or health? The main objective of this research is to go behind the scenes and answer this question. Langøien, in his article on YOGA, CHANGE AND EMBODIED ENLIGHTENMENT asserts that modern yoga in the west has more attention on the body and the physical part, while there are still some connections to the traditional and philosophical part of this path which may impact practitioners’ experience and in turn affects yoga traditions as well. (2012, p. 27). Through this research, I aim to explore the links and relations between the fitness trend side of yoga and its philosophical and religious traditions among practitioners of yoga at SATS.submittedVersionMV 17 S

A Review of Innovations in Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment Surgical Techniques.

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) requires surgical intervention for its repair. There are variable techniques used for this purpose, and they are all being continuously refined. In this review, we detail the recent innovations in surgical management of RRD and proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR)

State of the art on Timber Concrete Composite floor

Interest in timber-concrete composite (TCC) floors has increased over the last 20-30 years. Since the 1990âs, TCC solution is seen as a viable and effective alternative to conventional reinforced concrete and/or traditional timber floors in multistorey buildings. In TCC technology, a timber beam, either solid wood, glued laminated or laminated veneer lumber (LVL), is connected to a concrete slab using a connection system that resists shear forces and impedes slip between the members of the composite section. The strength, stiffness, location and number of connectors play a crucial role for the composite action and determine the structural and serviceability performance of the floor system. This paper discusses the state of the art of TCC structures. It presents a comprehensive review of the literature about the development and structural behaviour of TCC structures. The review addresses construction aspects and shear connection concepts. It evaluates experimental tests, finite element and numerical models. It discusses the influence of concrete elements. As recommendations, the best types of shear connection for cast in-situ and prefabricated TCC floors are put forward and assessed for criteria such as strength, stiffness, ductility and ease of manufacturing. Furthermore the most relevant numerical models are introduced. These models can be used to further the experimental results in parameters such as connections, configurations, geometrical and material properties

Urologic manifestations of inflammatory pseudotumor: Report of 2 cases and review of the literature.

We report two adult patients with varied urologic symptoms who were found to have inflammatory pseudotumor on histopathology. The first patient had a large, solid, enhancing retroperitoneal mass lesion and presented with increased frequency of urination and recurrent urinary tract infections. The second patient had an obstructing left distal ureteric stricture and presented with painless hematuria. Though preoperative radiological diagnosis of this entity is not feasible, the present article illustrates the imaging findings in this unusual disease entity with review of the relevant literature
