Motor deficits are produced by removing some cortical transplants grafted into injured sensorimotor cortex of neonatal rats.
Fetal frontal cortex was transplanted into cavities formed in the right motor cortex of neonatal rats. As adults, the animals were trained to press two levers in rapid succession with their left forelimb to receive food rewards. Once they had reached an optimal level of performance, the effect of removing their transplants was assessed. Surgical removal of transplants significantly impaired the performance of 2 of 4 subjects. Placing a cross-strain skin graft to induce the immunological rejection of the transplants produced a behavioral deficit in 1 of 2 subjects with complete transplant removal. Skin grafts produced no behavioral effects in four subjects that had surviving transplants. Since the motor deficits produced by transplant removal resembled those observed following the removal of normal motor cortex, we propose that these three transplants functioned within the host brain. Histology showed that the procedures used to remove cortical grafts did not injure any host brains. Therefore, host brain damage is unlikely to account for the behavioral deterioration that followed transplant removals
An Analysis of the Effectiveness of Records Management
This research was performed for the dual purpose of defining effectiveness as it applies to the field of records management (RM) and studying the impact of Document Librarian (DL) on the productivity of Air Force records managers. The main thrust of the study was to define effectiveness for RM because no standard existed. The definition was generated through a Delphi process with a group of RM experts and took four rounds to achieve acceptable consensus. The Delphi process evaluated major areas which a RM system must perform. DL is a RM software package developed jointly by Air Force Material Command (AFMC) and Wang Laboratories. The impact of DL on the productivity of RM was tested through a customer satisfaction survey. Survey questions focus on reliability, job performance, ease of use, utility, and overall appraisal. The survey revealed that the software is average from a user satisfaction point of view. According to responses received, users had not significantly improved their RM productivity with DL capabilities. Also, DL was not significantly easier to use or learn or even more user-friendly than other software, leaving the product\u27s testers unsure whether DL\u27s usefulness warrants its purchase and wider distribution throughout the Air Force
Differences in the Percentages of Students Enrolled in Dual Credit Courses over Time: A Texas, Multiyear Analysis
This study aimed to determine the degree to which differences were present in the percentages of all students who enrolled in a dual-credit mathematics course in Texas public high schools by their economic status (i.e., economically disadvantaged and all students). The percentages for both groups of students were compared for the 2014-2015 and the 2015-2016 school years. Inferential statistical analyses revealed statistically significant differences in the percentages in dual-credit mathematics course enrollment for all students and students who were economically disadvantaged in both the 2014-2015 and the 2015-2016 school years. For both years, economically disadvantaged students had a lower enrollment rate in dual-credit mathematics courses than all students' percentage enrollment in dual-credit mathematics courses. Implications of these findings, as well as recommendations for future research, were discussed
Report of the direct infrared sensors panel
The direct infrared sensors panel considered a wide range of options for technologies relevant to the science goals of the Astrotech 21 mission set. Among the technologies assessed are: large format arrays; photon counting detectors; higher temperature 1 to 10 micro-m arrays; impurity band conduction (IBC) or blocked impurity band (BIB) detectors; readout electronics; and adapting the Space Infrared Telescope Facility and Hubble Space Telescope. Detailed development plans were presented for each of these technology areas
New measurements of the cosmic infrared background fluctuations in deep Spitzer/IRAC survey data and their cosmological implications
We extend previous measurements of cosmic infrared background (CIB)
fluctuations to ~ 1 deg using new data from the Spitzer Extended Deep Survey.
Two fields, with depths of ~12 hr/pixel over 3 epochs, are analyzed at 3.6 and
4.5 mic. Maps of the fields were assembled using a self-calibration method
uniquely suitable for probing faint diffuse backgrounds. Resolved sources were
removed from the maps to a magnitude limit of AB mag ~ 25, as indicated by the
level of the remaining shot noise. The maps were then Fourier-transformed and
their power spectra were evaluated. Instrumental noise was estimated from the
time-differenced data, and subtracting this isolates the spatial fluctuations
of the actual sky. The power spectra of the source-subtracted fields remain
identical (within the observational uncertainties) for the three epochs
indicating that zodiacal light contributes negligibly to the fluctuations.
Comparing to 8 mic power spectra shows that Galactic cirrus cannot account for
the fluctuations. The signal appears isotropically distributed on the sky as
required for an extragalactic origin. The CIB fluctuations continue to diverge
to > 10 times those of known galaxy populations on angular scales out to < 1
deg. The low shot noise levels remaining in the diffuse maps indicate that the
large scale fluctuations arise from the spatial clustering of faint sources
well below the confusion noise. The spatial spectrum of these fluctuations is
in reasonable agreement with an origin in populations clustered according to
the standard cosmological model (LCDM) at epochs coinciding with the first

Submillimeter Imaging of NGC 891 with SHARC
The advent of submillimeter wavelength array cameras operating on large
ground-based telescopes is revolutionizing imaging at these wavelengths,
enabling high-resolution submillimeter surveys of dust emission in star-forming
regions and galaxies. Here we present a recent 350 micron image of the edge-on
galaxy NGC 891, which was obtained with the Submillimeter High Angular
Resolution Camera (SHARC) at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). We
find that high resolution submillimeter data is a vital complement to shorter
wavelength satellite data, which enables a reliable separation of the cold dust
component seen at millimeter wavelengths from the warmer component which

Non-clinical hallucinations and mental imagery across sensory modalities

Introduction: Vivid mental imagery has been proposed to increase the likelihood of experiencing hallucinations. Typically, studies have employed a modality general approach to mental imagery which compares imagery across multiple domains (e.g., visual, auditory and tactile) to hallucinations in multiple senses. However, modality specific imagery may be a better predictor of hallucinations in the same domain. The study examined the contribution of imagery to hallucinations in a non-clinical sample and specifically whether imagery best predicted hallucinations at a modality general or modality specific level. Methods: In study one, modality general and modality specific accounts of the imagery-hallucination relationship were contrasted through application of self-report measures in a sample of 434 students. Study two used a subsample (n = 103) to extend exploration of the imagery-hallucinations relationship using a performance-based imagery task. Results: A small to moderate modality general relationship was observed between self-report imagery and hallucination proneness. There was only evidence of a modality specific relationship in the tactile domain. Performance-based imagery measures were unrelated to hallucinations and self-report imagery. Conclusions: Mental imagery may act as a modality general process increasing hallucination proneness. The observed distinction between self-report and performance-based imagery highlights the difficulty of accurately measuring internal processes
Doing it for the kids?: The discursive construction of the teenager and teenage sexuality in E4’s Skins
The teen series is often regarded by television scholars as an inherently American genre. Indeed, the genre is marked by US constructs, such as the cheerleader, jock, homecoming dance and prom and, in turn, teen television scholarship has focused almost exclusively on US texts. However, more recent years have seen the emergence of British teen drama series, most notably Skins (E4, 2007-), which has been so successful that it has spawned an (albeit short-lived) US version which aired on MTV. In an attempt to redress the dearth of academic study of British teen dramas, this article explores Skins in more detail. Journalistic discourse on the programme has frequently emphasised the series' nihilism in contrast to the didacticism that characterises its US generic counterparts, which the series' creators justify by claims for its authenticity. This article moves beyond the authentic/inauthentic debate to explore instead the discursive construction of the teenager and teenage sexuality in the specific context of broadcasting in the UK. Thus, after situating Skins in relation to the history of youth programming in Britain and, specifically, on Channel 4, the article will explore issue-led storylines involving teenage sexuality in more detail. It will argue that despite the programme's nihilistic ethos, Skins is underpinned by more conservative ideologies, particularly regarding the depiction of gender and sexuality. In turn, this ambivalence makes it difficult to discern the programme's ideological stance on sexual issues
DNA polymerase B deficiency is linked to aggressive breast cancer: a comprehensive analysis of gene copy number, mRNA and protein expression in multiple cohorts
Short arm of chromosome 8 is a hot spot for chromosomal breaks, losses and amplifications in breast cancer. Although such genetic changes may have phenotypic consequences, the identity of candidate gene(s) remains to be clearly defined. Pol β gene is localized to chromosome 8p12 - p11 and encodes a key DNA base excision repair protein. Pol β may be a tumour suppressor and involved in breast cancer pathogenesis. We conducted the first and the largest study to comprehensively evaluate pol β in breast cancer. We investigated pol β gene copy number changes in two cohorts (n=128 & n=1952), pol β mRNA expression in two cohorts (n=249 & n=1952) and pol β protein expression in two cohorts (n=1406 & n=252). Artificial neural network analysis for pol β interacting genes was performed in 249 tumours. For mechanistic insights, pol β gene copy number changes, mRNA and protein levels were investigated together in 1 28 tumours and validated in 1952 tumours. Low pol β mRNA expression as well as low pol β protein expression was associated high grade, lymph node positivity, pleomorphism, triple negative, basal - like phenotypes and poor survival (ps<0.001). In oestrogen receptor (ER) positive sub - group that received tamoxifen, low pol β protein remains associated with aggressive phenotype and poor survival (ps<0.001). Artificial neural network analysis revealed ER as a top pol β interacting gene. Mechanistically, there was strong positive correlation between pol β gene copy number changes and pol β mRNA expression (p<0.0000001) and between pol β mRNA and pol β protein expression (p<0.0000001). This is the first study to provide evidence that pol β deficiency is linked to aggressive breast cancer and may have prognostic and predictive significance in patients
