    The results of the cryogenic wind tunnel program conducted at NASA Langley Research Center are presented to provide a starting point for the design of an instructional/research wind tunnel facility. The advantages of the cryogenic concept are discussed, and operating envelopes for a representative facility are presented to indicate the range and mode of operation. Special attention is given to the design, construction and materials problems peculiar to cryogenic wind tunnels. The control system for operation of a cryogenic tunnel is considered, and a portion of a linearized mathematical model is developed for determining the tunnel dynamic characteristics

    Acoustic Attenuation in High-TcT_c Superconductors

    We analyze the acoustic attenuation rate in high-TcT_c superconductors, and find that this method offers an additional way to examine the anisotropy of the superconducting order parameter in these materials. We argue that it should be possible to distinguish the electronic contribution to the acoustic attenuation, which has a strong temperature dependence near TcT_c, from the lattice contribution, which does not show a strong temperature dependence near TcT_c. We propose that this can be utilized to measure the anisotropy of the order parameter by measuring the attenuation rate near TcT_c in different directions.Comment: 9 pages, latex, 2 postscript figures, in press Physica C, (uuencoded file consisting of paper and 2 figures, please contact J.C.     Economic Analysis in the Pacific Northwest Land Resources Project: Theoretical Considerations and Preliminary Results

    The Pacific Northwest Land Resources Inventory Demonstration Project i s an a ttempt to combine a whole spectrum of heterogeneous geographic, institutional and applications elements in a synergistic approach to the evaluation of remote sensing techniques. This diversity is the prime motivating factor behind a theoretical investigation of alternative economic analysis procedures. For a multitude of reasons--simplicity, ease of understanding, financial constraints and credibility, among others--cost-effectiveness emerges as the most practical tool for conducting such evaluation determinatIons in the Pacific Northwest. Preliminary findings in two water resource application areas suggest, in conformity with most published studies, that Lands at-aided data collection methods enjoy substantial cost advantages over alternative techniques. The pntential for sensitivity analysis based on cost/accuracy tradeoffs is considered on a theoretical plane in the absence of current accuracy figures concerning the Landsat-aided approach

    Conductivity of a graphene strip: width and gate-voltage dependencies

    We study the conductivity of a graphene strip taking into account electrostatically-induced charge accumulation on its edges. Using a local dependency of the conductivity on the carrier concentration we find that the electrostatic size effect in doped graphene strip of the width of 0.5 - 3 μ% \mu m can result in a significant (about 40%) enhancement of the effective conductivity in comparison to the infinitely wide samples. This effect should be taken into account both in the device simulation as well as for verification of scattering mechanisms in graphene.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure

    This thesis outlines the use of a new design of Tidal Energy Conversion device which has application in near shore shallow water. The design is applicable for use by coastal communities, either to generate revenue through power sales or just a stand alone system to generate off grid electricity. Previous work conducted on large scale tidal installations have shown that they suffer from excessive costs and time lines, due to their up front design philosophy. This thesis discusses the reasons behind such cost/time overruns and concludes that several technologies and techniques can be incorporated from the subsea oil and gas industry. The early ethos in the offshore oil industry in the 1970s and 1980s was to build large offshore structures such as steel and concrete platforms. This has now been replaced by a field development philosophy that looks at simple lower cost subsea well infrastructure as the most cost effective route to exploit a reservoir. The emerging tidal industry has not learned this lesson, yet. A set of new Tidal Energy exploitation designs are proposed and Patented. The chief advantages of this new design are their modular nature, fabrication simplicity, lower build and installation cost. Prototype work is described and further work also highlighted
