The effects of environmental exposure on reusable surface insulation for space shuttle
Coated specimens of reusable surface insulation (RSI) were exposed to alternate radiant heating and atmospheric exposure cycles to study the effects of surface contamination on the RSI coating. Different methods of heating were employed on clean and artificially contaminated specimens to determine the contributions of heating conditions to coating devitrification
On Krein-like theorems for noncanonical Hamiltonian systems with continuous spectra: application to Vlasov-Poisson
The notions of spectral stability and the spectrum for the Vlasov-Poisson
system linearized about homogeneous equilibria, f_0(v), are reviewed.
Structural stability is reviewed and applied to perturbations of the linearized
Vlasov operator through perturbations of f_0. We prove that for each f_0 there
is an arbitrarily small delta f_0' in W^{1,1}(R) such that f_0+delta f_0f_0$ is perturbed by an area preserving rearrangement, f_0 will
always be stable if the continuous spectrum is only of positive signature,
where the signature of the continuous spectrum is defined as in previous work.
If there is a signature change, then there is a rearrangement of f_0 that is
unstable and arbitrarily close to f_0 with f_0' in W^{1,1}. This result is
analogous to Krein's theorem for the continuous spectrum. We prove that if a
discrete mode embedded in the continuous spectrum is surrounded by the opposite
signature there is an infinitesimal perturbation in C^n norm that makes f_0
unstable. If f_0 is stable we prove that the signature of every discrete mode

Relaxation to magnetohydrodynamics equilibria via collision brackets
Metriplectic dynamics is applied to compute equilibria of fluid dynamical
systems. The result is a relaxation method in which Hamiltonian dynamics
(symplectic structure) is combined with dissipative mechanisms (metric
structure) that relaxes the system to the desired equilibrium point. The
specific metric operator, which is considered in this work, is formally
analogous to the Landau collision operator. These ideas are illustrated by
means of case studies. The considered physical models are the Euler equations

Environmental effects on space shuttle reusable surface insulation coated with reaction cured glass
Sample titles of the space shuttle reusable surface insulation was subjected alternately to simulated mission heating and either real or simulated environmental exposure for up to 34 cycles. The coating cracked as a result of exposure to high temperature and moisture conditions, and insulation with cracked coatings absorbed significant quantities of water in the launch-pad environment. Cracking was a complex function of time, temperature, and moisture exposure. Cracked coatings remained adherent to the insulation for up to 24 cycles past initial cracking
On the Theory of Superfluidity in Two Dimensions
The superfluid phase transition of the general vortex gas, in which the
circulations may be any non-zero integer, is studied. When the net circulation
of the system is not zero the absence of a superfluid phase is shown. When the
net circulation of the vortices vanishes, the presence of off-diagonal long
range order is demonstrated and the existence of an order parameter is
proposed. The transition temperature for the general vortex gas is shown to be
the Kosterlitz---Thouless temperature. An upper bound for the average vortex
number density is established for the general vortex gas and an exact

Effect of 25 cycles of launch pad exposure and simulated mission heating on space shuttle reusable surface insulation coated with reaction cured glass
Tiles of space shuttle reusable surface insulation coated with reaction cured glass were subjected to 25 cycles of launch pad exposure and simulated mission heating. The coating could not withstand the environment without cracking. Water absorption after cracking reached as high as 150 weight percent. Exposure of insulation fibers beneath the coating to contaminants dissolved in absorbed water initiated fiber degradation
Mapping 6D N = 1 supergravities to F-theory
We develop a systematic framework for realizing general anomaly-free chiral
6D supergravity theories in F-theory. We focus on 6D (1, 0) models with one
tensor multiplet whose gauge group is a product of simple factors (modulo a
finite abelian group) with matter in arbitrary representations. Such theories
can be decomposed into blocks associated with the simple factors in the gauge
group; each block depends only on the group factor and the matter charged under
it. All 6D chiral supergravity models can be constructed by gluing such blocks
together in accordance with constraints from anomalies. Associating a geometric
structure to each block gives a dictionary for translating a supergravity model
into a set of topological data for an F-theory construction. We construct the
dictionary of F-theory divisors explicitly for some simple gauge group factors
and associated matter representations. Using these building blocks we analyze a
variety of models. We identify some 6D supergravity models which do not map to
integral F-theory divisors, possibly indicating quantum inconsistency of these

Practical thermodynamics of Yukawa systems at strong coupling
Simple practical approach to estimate thermodynamic properties of strongly
coupled Yukawa systems, in both fluid and solid phases, is presented. The
accuracy of the approach is tested by extensive comparison with direct computer
simulation results (for fluids and solids) and the recently proposed
shortest-graph method (for solids). Possible applications to other systems of
softly repulsive particles are briefly discussed.Comment: Published in J. Chem. Phy
The VIPERS Multi-Lambda Survey. II. Diving with massive galaxies in 22 square degrees since z = 1.5
We investigate the evolution of the galaxy stellar mass function (SMF) and
stellar mass density from redshift z=0.2 to z=1.5 of a <22-selected
sample with highly reliable photometric redshifts and over an unprecedentedly
large area. Our study is based on NIR observations carried out with WIRCam at
CFHT over the footprint of the VIPERS spectroscopic survey and benefits from
the high quality optical photometry from the CFHTLS and UV observations with
the GALEX satellite. The accuracy of our photometric redshifts is <
0.03 and 0.05 for the bright (22.5) samples,
respectively. The SMF is measured with ~760,000 galaxies down to =22 and
over an effective area of ~22.4 deg, the latter of which drastically
reduces the statistical uncertainties (i.e. Poissonian error & cosmic
variance). We point out the importance of a careful control of the photometric
calibration, whose impact becomes quickly dominant when statistical
uncertainties are reduced, which will be a major issue for future generation of
cosmological surveys with, e.g. EUCLID or LSST. By exploring the rest-frame
(NUV-r) vs (r-) color-color diagram separating star-forming and quiescent
galaxies, (1) we find that the density of very massive log() >
11.5 galaxies is largely dominated by quiescent galaxies and increases by a
factor 2 from z~1 to z~0.2, which allows for additional mass assembly via dry
mergers, (2) we confirm a scenario where star formation activity is impeded
above a stellar mass log() = 10.640.01, a value that
is found to be very stable at 0.2 < z < 1.5, (3) we discuss the existence of a
main quenching channel that is followed by massive star-forming galaxies, and
finally (4) we characterise another quenching mechanism required to explain the
