Rapid solidification of Ni3Al by Osprey deposition
A Ni3Al-based alloy containing Cr is examined after preparation by Osprey deposition. The microstructure consists of solidified spherical regions showing cellular segregation interspersed with regions of finer, equiaxed segregation morphology. The segregation structure is characterized by cell interiors rich in aluminum and poor in chromium, while the cell walls are poor in aluminum and rich in chromium. This segregation pattern is the inverse of that expected, based on earlier melt spinning experience, and is explained in terms of the undercooling of the melt prior to solidification. Dislocations in plastically deformed L12 compounds based on Al3Ti
The fine structure of dislocations in lightly deformed samples of several cubic ordered alloys with composition based on Al3Ti has been examined by weak beam electron microscopy. For all the materials examined the dislocations tend to dissociate into two 1/2(110) partials separated by APB. Dislocation dissociation is not complete at very small strains and the strain required to dissociate, as well as the dissociation distance, varies from one alloy to another. Gyroid cuticular structures in butterfly wing scales: biological photonic crystals
We present a systematic study of the cuticular structure in the butterfly wing scales of some papilionids (Parides sesostris and Teinopalpus imperialis) and lycaenids (Callophrys rubi, Cyanophrys remus, Mitoura gryneus and Callophrys dumetorum). Using published scanning and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, analytical modelling and computer-generated TEM micrographs, we find that the three-dimensional cuticular structures can be modelled by gyroid structures with various filling fractions and lattice parameters. We give a brief discussion of the formation of cubic gyroid membranes from the smooth endoplasmic reticulum in the scale's cell, which dry and harden to leave the cuticular structure behind when the cell dies. The scales of C. rubi are a potentially attractive biotemplate for producing three-dimensional optical photonic crystals since for these scales the cuticle-filling fraction is nearly optimal for obtaining the largest photonic band gap in a gyroid structure
An evaluation of the capability of data conversion of impression creep test
High temperature power plant components are now working far beyond their operative designed life. Establishing their in-service material properties has become a matter of significant concern for power generation companies. Advantages for the assessment of creep material properties may come from miniature specimen creep testing techniques, like impression creep testing method, which can be treated as a quasistatic non-destructive technique and requires a small volume of material that can be scooped from in-service critical components, and can produce reliable secondary creep data.
This paper presents an overview of impression creep testing method to highlight the capability in determining the minimum creep strain rate data by use of conversion relationships that relates uniaxial creep test data and impression creep test data. Stepped-load and stepped-temperature impression creep tests are also briefly described. Furthermore, the paper presents some new impression creep test data and their correlation with uniaxial data, obtained from P91, P92 and ½CrMoV steels at different stresses and temperatures. The presented data, in terms of creep strain rate against the reference uniaxial stress, are useful for calibration of impression creep testing technique and provide further comparative results for the evaluation of the reliability of the method in determining secondary creep properties
The VLT LBG redshift survey – VI. Mapping H i in the proximity of z ∼ 3 LBGs with X-Shooter
We present an analysis of the spatial distribution and dynamics of neutral hydrogen gas around galaxies using new X-Shooter observations of z ∼ 2.5–4 quasars. Adding the X-Shooter data to our existing data set of high-resolution quasar spectroscopy, we use a total sample of 29 quasars alongside ∼1700 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) in the redshift range 2 ≲ z ≲ 3.5. We measure the Lyα forest auto-correlation function, finding a clustering length of s0 = 0.081 ± 0.006 h−1 Mpc, and the cross-correlation function with LBGs, finding a cross-clustering length of s0 = 0.27 ± 0.14 h−1 Mpc and power-law slope γ = 1.1 ± 0.2. Our results highlight the weakly clustered nature of neutral hydrogren systems in the Lyα forest. Building on this, we make a first analysis of the dependence of the clustering on absorber strength, finding a clear preference for stronger Lyα forest absorption features to be more strongly clustered around the galaxy population, suggesting that they trace on average higher mass haloes. Using the projected and 2-D cross-correlation functions, we constrain the dynamics of Lyα forest clouds around z ∼ 3 galaxies. We find a significant detection of large-scale infall of neutral hydrogen, with a constraint on the Lyα forest infall parameter of βF = 1.02 ± 0.22
CEH-GEAR: 1 km resolution daily and monthly areal rainfall estimates for the UK for hydrological and other applications
The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology – Gridded Estimates of Areal Rainfall (CEH-GEAR) data set was developed to provide reliable 1 km gridded estimates of daily and monthly rainfall for Great Britain (GB) and Northern Ireland (NI) (together with approximately 3500 km2 of catchment in the Republic of Ireland) from 1890 onwards. The data set was primarily required to support hydrological modelling.
The rainfall estimates are derived from the Met Office collated historical weather observations for the UK which include a national database of rain gauge observations. The natural neighbour interpolation methodology, including a normalisation step based on average annual rainfall (AAR), was used to generate the daily and monthly rainfall grids. To derive the monthly estimates, rainfall totals from monthly and daily (when complete month available) rain gauges were used in order to obtain maximum information from the rain gauge network. The daily grids were adjusted so that the monthly grids are fully consistent with the daily grids. The CEH-GEAR data set was developed according to the guidance provided by the British Standards Institution.
The CEH-GEAR data set contains 1 km grids of daily and monthly rainfall estimates for GB and NI for the period 1890–2012. For each day and month, CEH-GEAR includes a secondary grid of distance to the nearest operational rain gauge. This may be used as an indicator of the quality of the estimates. When this distance is greater than 100 km, the estimates are not calculated due to high uncertainty
Gamma Efficiency Simulations towards Coincidence Measurements for Fusion Cross Sections
With the experimental station STELLA (STELlar LAboratory) we will measure fusion cross sections of astrophysical relevance making use of the coincident detection of charged particles and gamma rays for background reduction. For the measurement of gamma rays from the de-excitation of fusion products a compact array of 36 UK FATIMA LaBr3 detectors is designed based on efficiency studies with Geant4. The photo peak efficiency in the region of interest compares to other gamma detection systems used in this field. The features of the internal decay of 138La is used in a background study to obtain an online calibration of the gamma detectors. Background data are fit to the Monte Carlo model of the self activity assuming crude exponential behavior of external background. Accuracy in the region of interest is of the order of some keV in this first study
Correlation and capability of using site inspection data and small specimen creep testing for a service-exposed CrMoV pipe section
This paper presents for the first time an investigation on the creep damage evolution of an ex-service CrMoV pipe section through impression creep test and metallurgical inspection data. The study emphasises the importance of correlating the operating conditions (temperature and stress) of power plant components with the results from metallurgical examinations and small specimen creep tests. The paper seeks for a correlation among micro- and macro-hardness measurements, surface replicas data and minimum creep strain rates (obtained by impression creep tests) of the parent material of the pipe section. Also, optical and SEM micrographs have been used to assess possible metallurgical differences through the thickness of the pipe section. This investigation shows how miniature creep test specimen data could be practically used in a holistic approach for the evaluation of life consumption of power plant components and concludes that the studied parent material could have been retired from service too early
