    Influencia de la densidad de la masa adulta y el tratamiento del suelo sobre la regeneración del pino laricio (Pinus nigra Arn. ssp. Salzmannii) en España

    Satisfactory results relating to the natural regeneration of the Spanish black pine (Pinus nigra Arn ssp. salzmannii) is generally difficult to achieve. The natural regeneration of this pine was studied comparing two types of soil treatment and various overstory densities in six experimental forests. These studies were conducted from 1999 to 2002 and seed rain and germination, as well as seedling survival were observed in a number of specific plots: Brushing, scalping and control plots. In addition various overstory densities were used (measured as base area (square m/ha). Soil and air temperature together with soil moisture were continuously recorded throughout this summer period. The results showed that seed germination was higher in plots using the scalping technique, as opposed to the brushed or controlled plots. The best seedling survival percentage was found in scalped plots together with a larger basal area. It was also found that seedling survival was lower during the first year than during the second one. The results have practical implications for management of Spanish black pine forests as well as valuable information which could improve the conditions for regeneration.Generalmente es difícil conseguir una regeneración natural satisfactoria del pino laricio (Pinus nigra Arn ssp. salzmannii). Esta ha sido estudiada en dos tipos de tratamiento del suelo y bajo diferentes rangos de densidad de masa en seis montes de la Provincia de Cuenca. Entre 1999 y 2000 se ha seguido la lluvia de semillas, germinación y supervivencia de plántulas en las parcelas en las que se realizaron los tratamientos de suelo y bajo diferentes rangos de densidad de masa adulta, medida como área basimétrica (m cuadrados/ha). La temperatura del suelo y aire y la humedad del suelo han sido registradas durante el verano y para las dos primeras épocas de crecimiento de las plántulas. En las zonas decapadas la germinación fue superior a la encontrada en las zonas desbrozadas o testigo. El mejor porcentaje de supervivencia se calculó para las zonas decapadas en combinación con el mayor nivel de área basimétrica medido. La mortalidad de plántulas fue superior durante el primer periodo de crecimiento. Los resultados tienen implicaciones prácticas especialmente en lo relativo a una gestión forestal que mejore las condiciones para la regeneración natural de los bosques de pino laricio

    Reexamining treatment of high-grade T1 bladder cancer according to depth of lamina propria invasion: a prospective trial of 200 patients

    BACKGROUND: Management of high-grade T1 (HGT1) bladder cancer represents a major challenge. We studied a treatment strategy according to substaging by depth of lamina propria invasion. METHODS: In this prospective observational cohort study, patients received initial transurethral resection (TUR), mitomycin-C, and BCG. Subjects with shallower lamina propria invasion (HGT1a) were followed without further surgery, whereas subjects with HGT1b received a second TUR. Association of clinical and histological features with outcomes (primary: progression; secondary: recurrence and cancer-specific survival) was assessed using Cox regression. RESULTS: Median age was 71 years; 89.5% were males, with 89 (44.5%) cases T1a and 111 (55.5%) T1b. At median follow-up of 71 months, disease progression was observed in 31 (15.5%) and in univariate analysis, substaging, carcinoma in situ, tumour size, and tumour pattern predicted progression. On multivariate analysis only substaging, associated carcinoma in situ, and tumour size remained significant for progression. CONCLUSIONS: In HGT1 bladder cancer, the strategy of performing a second TUR only in T1b cases results in a global low progression rate of 15.5%. Tumours deeply invading the lamina propria (HGT1b) showed a three-fold increase in risk of progression. Substaging should be routinely evaluated, with HGT1b cases being thoroughly evaluated for cystectomy. Inclusion in the TNM system should also be carefully considered

    Artificial intelligence-based software (AID-FOREST) for tree detection: A new framework for fast and accurate forest inventorying using LiDAR point clouds

    Forest inventories are essential to accurately estimate different dendrometric and forest stand parameters. However, classical forest inventories are time consuming, slow to conduct, sometimes inaccurate and costly. To address this problem, an efficient alternative approach has been sought and designed that will make this type of field work cheaper, faster, more accurate, and easier to complete. The implementation of this concept has required the development of a specifically designed software called "Artificial Intelligence for Digital Forest (AID-FOREST)", which is able to process point clouds obtained via mobile terrestrial laser scanning (MTLS) and then, to provide an array of multiple useful and accurate dendrometric and forest stand parameters. Singular characteristics of this approach are: No data pre-processing is required either pre-treatment of forest stand; fully automatic process once launched; no limitations by the size of the point cloud file and fast computations.To validate AID-FOREST, results provided by this software were compared against the obtained from in-situ classical forest inventories. To guaranty the soundness and generality of the comparison, different tree spe-cies, plot sizes, and tree densities were measured and analysed. A total of 76 plots (10,887 trees) were selected to conduct both a classic forest inventory reference method and a MTLS (ZEB-HORIZON, Geoslam, ltd.) scanning to obtain point clouds for AID-FOREST processing, known as the MTLS-AIDFOREST method. Thus, we compared the data collected by both methods estimating the average number of trees and diameter at breast height (DBH) for each plot. Moreover, 71 additional individual trees were scanned with MTLS and processed by AID-FOREST and were then felled and divided into logs measuring 1 m in length. This allowed us to accurately measure the DBH, total height, and total volume of the stems.When we compared the results obtained with each methodology, the mean detectability was 97% and ranged from 81.3 to 100%, with a bias (underestimation by MTLS-AIDFOREST method) in the number of trees per plot of 2.8% and a relative root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 9.2%. Species, plot size, and tree density did not significantly affect detectability. However, this parameter was significantly affected by the ecosystem visual complexity index (EVCI). The average DBH per plot was underestimated (but was not significantly different from 0) by the MTLS-AIDFOREST, with the average bias for pooled data being 1.8% with a RMSE of 7.5%. Similarly, there was no statistically significant differences between the two distribution functions of the DBH at the 95.0% confidence level.Regarding the individual tree parameters, MTLS-AIDFOREST underestimated DBH by 0.16 % (RMSE = 5.2 %) and overestimated the stem volume (Vt) by 1.37 % (RMSE = 14.3 %, although the BIAS was not statistically significantly different from 0). However, the MTLS-AIDFOREST method overestimated the total height (Ht) of the trees by a mean 1.33 m (5.1 %; relative RMSE = 11.5 %), because of the different height concepts measured by both methodological approaches. Finally, AID-FOREST required 30 to 66 min per ha-1 to fully automatically process the point cloud data from the *.las file corresponding to a given hectare plot. Thus, applying our MTLS-AIDFOREST methodology to make full forest inventories, required a 57.3 % of the time required to perform classical plot forest inventories (excluding the data postprocessing time in the latter case).     A Single-Run Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) Assay for the Simultaneous Detection of Both Gene Mutations and Large Chromosomal Abnormalities in Patients with Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) and Related Myeloid Neoplasms

    Chromosomal abnormalities and somatic mutations are found in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPN) in around 50-80% of cases. The identification of these alterations is important for the accurate diagnosis and prognostic classification of these patients. Often, an apparently normal or failed karyotype might lead to an inadequate estimation of the prognostic risk, and several strategies should be combined to solve these cases. The aim of this study was to introduce a novel next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based strategy for the simultaneous detection of all the clinically relevant genetic alterations associated with these disorders. We validated this approach on a large cohort of patients by comparing our findings with those obtained with standard-of-care methods (i.e., karyotype and SNP-arrays). We show that our platform represents a significant improvement on current strategies in defining diagnosis and risk stratification of patients with MDS and myeloid-related disorders. Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms are clonal disorders that share most of their cytogenetic and molecular alterations. Despite the increased knowledge of the prognostic importance of genetics in these malignancies, next-generation sequencing (NGS) has not been incorporated into clinical practice in a validated manner, and the conventional karyotype remains mandatory in the evaluation of suspected cases. However, non-informative cytogenetics might lead to an inadequate estimation of the prognostic risk. Here, we present a novel targeted NGS-based assay for the simultaneous detection of all the clinically relevant genetic alterations associated with these disorders. We validated this platform in a large cohort of patients by performing a one-to-one comparison with the lesions from karyotype and single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays. Our strategy demonstrated an approximately 97% concordance with standard clinical assays, showing sensitivity at least equivalent to that of SNP arrays and higher than that of conventional cytogenetics. In addition, this NGS assay was able to identify both copy-neutral loss of heterozygosity events distributed genome-wide and copy number alterations, as well as somatic mutations within significant driver genes. In summary, we show a novel NGS platform that represents a significant improvement to current strategies in defining diagnosis and risk stratification of patients with MDS and myeloid-related disorder

    “Tourism, water, and gender”—An international review of an unexplored nexus

    This international literature review of the tourism–water nexus identifies a gender gap. Tourism development can affect water supply both quantitatively and qualitatively. Many regions will face considerable problems of water availability and quality, affecting their tourism sector and increasing competition with local residents, and other industries especially agriculture. This international review of literature explores the tourism–water nexus, comparing and contrasting literature published in English, Chinese, and Spanish. Securing access to safe water for continued tourism development is a common theme and the vast majority of work has focused on hotels including water pricing, water-saving practices and innovative management methods. In all continents, struggles are apparent, and the unsustainability of tourism is having impacts on water quantity and quality. This article identifies significant gaps in the literature including climate change, the energy-water nexus, and the links with the Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, studies from a gendered perspective are minimal and the potential for areas of further gendered studies within the tourism–water nexus are highlighted including intersectionality, water insecurity and sanitation, tourism and gender based violence, and additional unpaid care work

    Influencia del diseño agronómico en la acumulación de boro en árboles de limonero temprano "Fino 49"

    La Región de Murcia es la principal productora de limón de España. Sin embargo, la climatología en esta región es semiárida, y bajo estas condiciones, la viabilidad de las explotaciones agrícolas depende principalmente de la disponibilidad y manejo agronómico de los recursos hídricos. En la actualidad, los agricultores complementan parte de los recursos hídricos convencionales disponibles con otros recursos no convencionales, como el agua de mar desalada o las aguas depuradas. Sin embargo, estos recursos no convencionales pueden presentar elevadas concentraciones de cloro, sodio y especialmente boro (B), que puede reducir la productividad de cultivos especialmente sensibles, como los cítricos, que presentan bajos umbrales de fitotoxicidad por boro (0,5 mg L-1 en el agua de riego). Respecto al manejo agronómico, mejoras en el diseño agronómico de la instalación de riego buscando un incremento de la superficie mojada pueden, por un lado, ayudar a aumentar la capacidad hidráulica de la planta, lo que podría favorecer la productividad del cultivo, pero también favorecen la acumulación en hoja de diferentes elementos minerales. Por lo tanto, el objetivo del experimento fue evaluar si un aumento en el volumen mojado del suelo al incrementar el número de goteros por árbol puede favorecer la acumulación de boro en hoja y cómo responde agronómicamente el cultivo. El ensayo se llevó a cabo durante tres campañas (2017-2019) en una parcela experimental en Torre Pacheco (Murcia), en árboles adultos de limonero ‘Fino 49’ injertados sobre Citrus macrophylla. Se han evaluado dos diseños del sistema de riego: diseño convencional (2L), con dos tuberías portagoteros (6 goteros árbol-1); y un diseño con mayor superficie mojada (3L), con tres tuberías (9 goteros árbol-1), aplicando la misma cantidad de agua de riego en ambos tratamientos. Se realizó un seguimiento periódico de la calidad del agua de riego recibida en el embalse de la parcela (pH, CE, Na, Cl, Ca, Mg, y principalmente B). En noviembre de cada campaña se realizó un muestro foliar en 12 árboles por tratamiento para el análisis de contenido mineral en hoja de macronutrientes y micronutrientes (principalmente B). En los mismos árboles, se realizó la cosecha, determinando el número de frutos cosechados y los kilogramos obtenidos por árbol. Los principales resultados indicaron que los valores promedio de B en el agua de riego durante el periodo experimental estuvieron muy cercanos a los 0,50 mg L-1. Esto se vio reflejado en los niveles de B en hoja, que se incrementaron anualmente, hasta alcanzar en la última campaña valores de 197 ppm y 179 ppm en el tratamiento 2L y 3L respectivamente, más del doble de los registrados en 2017. Dicho aumento del contenido de B en hoja estuvo relacionado significativamente con una reducción de la producción, en un 44% y 41%, debido a una disminución del número de frutos cosechados del 50% y 47% en el tratamiento 2L y 3L respectivamente, respecto a la primera campaña. Por lo tanto, los diferentes diseños agronómicos estudiados respondieron de manera similar a la acumulación de boro en hoja con similares efectos sobre la producción

    Bone mineral density in Jamaican men on androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) has been reported to reduce the bone mineral density (BMD) in men with prostate cancer (CaP). However, Afro-Caribbeans are under-represented in most studies. The aim was to determine the effect of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) on the bone mineral density (BMD) of men with prostate cancer in Jamaica.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study consisted of 346 Jamaican men, over 40 years of age: 133 ADT treated CaP cases (group 1), 43 hormone-naïve CaP controls (group 2) and 170 hormone naïve controls without CaP (group 3). Exclusion criteria included metastatic disease, bisphosphonate therapy or metabolic disease affecting BMD. BMD was measured with a calcaneal ultrasound and expressed in S.D. units relative to young adult men (T score), according to the World Health Organization definition. Patient weight, height and BMI were assessed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mean ± sd, age of patients in group 1 (75± 7.4 yrs) was significantly greater than groups 2 and 3 (67 ± 8.1 yrs; 65±12.0 yrs). There was no significant difference in weight and BMI between the 3 groups. . The types of ADT (% of cases, median duration in months with IQR) included LHRH (Luteinizing hormone releasing hormone) analogues (28.6%, 17.9, IQR 20.4), oestrogens (9.8%, 60.5, IQR 45.6) anti-androgens (11.3%, 3.3, IQR 15.2) and orchiectomy (15.7%, 43.4, IQR 63.9). Unadjusted t score of group 1, mean ± sd, (-1.6± 1.5) was significantly less than group 2 (-0.9±1.1) and group 3 (-0.7±1.4), p <0.001. Ninety three (69.9%), 20 (45%) and 75 (42%) of patients in groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively were classified as either osteopenic or osteoporotic (p<0.001). Adjusting for age, there was a significant difference in t scores between groups 1 and 2 as well as between groups 1 and 3 (p<0.001). Compared with oestrogen therapy and adjusting for duration of therapy, the odds of low bone mineral density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) with LHRH analogue was 4.5 (95%CI, 14.3 to 3.4); with anti-androgens was 5.9 (95%CI, 32.7 to 5); with orchiectomy was 7.3 (95%CI, 30 to 5.8) and multiple drugs was 9.2 ((95%CI, 31 to 7.1).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>ADT is associated with lower BMD in Jamaican men on hormonal therapy for prostate cancer.</p
