Citation: Morlan, Fred Byers. Some stock farm equipments. Senior thesis, Kansas State Agricultural College, 1900.Morse Department of Special CollectionsIntroduction: Many farmers who are engaged in the live stock industry are sadly hampered by a lack of conveniences, or even those things almost essential to successful work. Much of this is due more to an ignorance of what is really required and may be obtained than from financial difficulties. While it is true that some of these inconveniences were due to a lack of means necessary for a proper equipment at the start, much of it can be explained by the disadvantage under which the early settlers of the western state labored in regard to the existing conditions, and the lack of experience as to how best to meet them. Others have failed to keep posted on the many modern contrivances which have been invented and introduced, or the constant advance, in this age of progress, of new and improved methods. The farmer’s work may often be greatly lightened and better results secured by the intelligent use and application of methods, principles and machines, familiar to some, but comparatively new to others. Some persons have little use for certain things which others consider almost indispensable, perhaps through ignorance of their real value, or an actual knowledge of their worthlessness. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss certain methods and contrivances, and also offer others, which, in the writer’s opinion, are superior to many in common use

Taphonomy and Paleoecology of Fossil Insect Assemblages from Old Crow River (CRH-15) Northern Yukon Territory, Canada

The paleoenvironmental message delivered by any fossil assemblage is nearly always filtered to some degree by taphonomic and preservational biases. This paper discusses some of the types of biases that affect the composition of fossil Coleoptera (beetles) assemblages. Eight samples from a single site in the northern Yukon provide the raw data for the analysis. They represent different types of host sediments — ranging from autochthonous peats to organic rich alluvial sands. For each assemblage the authors noted the state of preservation of the fossils, counted the individual anatomical parts (pronota, heads, elytra) referred to each taxon and the number of articulated or partially articulated specimens, and sorted the fossils on the basis of predefined ecological groups. The resulting data were then examined statistically, and compared with paleoenvironmental conclusions derived by examination of the present distribution of the taxa in each assemblage. The content of the insect assemblages varies with the type of host sediment. Insect fossils from autochthonous sediments deliver a reliable local environmental signal. Allochthonous sediments, such as alluvium, might be expected to contain fossils that provide an integrated picture of the regional environment, but in the Yukon such samples are seriously overrep resented by Lepidophorus lineaticollis, a weevil that lives on or near sandy floodplains. Deviations in the representation of particular anatomical elements of L. lineaticollis from one sample to another warn of other more subtle taphonomic biases that may also skew the content of northern fossil insect assemblages.

Anesthesia Concerns with the Beach Chair Position

    Get PDF
The beach chair position has become a commonplace positioning technique for various procedures in the operating room. The purpose of this study was to review research related to the use of the beach chair position and general anesthesia along with the complications associated with it. There can be complications associated with this position that include venous air embolism, unrecognized cerebral hypoperfusion, blindness, and nerve injuries. The beach chair position causes many hemodynamic changes in the body; this is compounded when general anesthesia is used to further impact the stability of patients. Recent research has shown a death and three cases of severe brain damage related to patients in the beach chair position who were at low risk for these complications (Pohl & Cullen, 2005). The findings indicate that there are complications that can occur when placing patients in the beach chair position while under general anesthesia. Many of those complications were not recognized by the surgical team. Patients who had the most severe complications were deemed to be at a low risk for such events prior to surgery. The number of patients in the studies was low, but if patients had complications related to this positioning technique, the outcomes were devastating to them. The beach chair position and general anesthesia can induce many unwarranted problems in patients. Complications can be numerous with lifelong implications to previously healthy individuals. Vigilance among providers in regard to patients\u27 hemodynamics and positioning are keys in order to prevent complications. Due to the low number of cases found, further research is needed to corroborate these findings

Skin fascinates me. Skin can display stress, health, emotions, beauty, and identity. My honors focused on researching skin, choosing different topics pertaining to skin, and creating painted imagery. I chose to create oil paintings to explore new ways of applying color. My research about stress and health of skin and my research into color, began simultaneously. I researched artists who were using skin as a topic or uniquely. Most of the unique art I found were sculptures that would abnormally mold the skin. Skin became a design or a malleable material. I also researched various colors in skin and medical pictures for references of conditions I wished to portray. I used 10 by 10 inch canvases, to create the small images. My painting process built up the paintings at the same time, starting with underpaintings of Venetian Red. I started with one color palette of skin colors. Some of the colors from the first painting would be used subsequently, to connect the images. Though, connected, I wanted each one to be unique in emotion and color. I would choose certain palettes based on a body part or based on race. For darker skin tones, I utilized bluish, yellow, and white colors. I played with color schemes, even unnatural skin colors like dark blue or green skin. I varied sources of light and worked with shadow and depth until it seemed right. For the research and the painting process, I found great inspiration for color and skin from artists like Lucian Freud and Jonathan Yeo. My biggest struggle was using close-up parts of the human body and defining their planes. Researching the individual medical pictures of body parts helped understand how the skin lays on muscles, veins, and tendons. I used many different skin conditions like acne, flushing, oiliness, goosebumps, dry skin and wrinkles. I personally have the genetic condition called Keratosis Pilaris and I embrace it. Through this research project, I hoped to not only learn more about internal influences on our external canvas, skin, but also about painting skin. I wanted to show the beauty not typically beautiful skin conditions, as well as how some people really embrace their skin. I learned more about the possibilities of painting skin and in the future, I will explore more ideas about different emotions through skin colors. I will paint different emotional issues through portrait and color

Conversion in Luke and Paul: Some Exegetical and Theological Explorations

    Get PDF
This dissertation explores the conversion theologies of Luke and Paul. For Luke and Paul conversion played an important role in the early Christian experience and in this dissertation we take a fresh look into how they interpreted this phenomenon. We traverse representative texts in the Lukan and Pauline corpus equipped with three theological questions. What is the change involved in conversion? Why is conversion necessary? Who is responsible for conversion? In our theological and exegetical analysis of Luke 15, Acts 2, Acts 17:16-34, Romans 2 and Romans 9-11 we answer these three theological questions, which then builds a theological profile for both Luke and Paul. These profiles provide fresh insight into the theological relationship between Luke and Paul showing significant similarities as well as sharp contrasts between them. Differences emerge concerning their understanding of repentance as well as in the correlation between conversion and creation: for Luke, conversion is the restored imago dei of the original creation while for Paul it is a fresh act by God of New Creation. Similarities surface between Luke and Paul concerning the centrality of Christology in their conversion theologies. While showing a complex relationship between human and divine agency in conversion, both Luke and Paul understand successful conversion to be impossible without the intervention of an agency outside of the pre-convert

Identity Creation and Power Acquisition Through Language use in Preadolescent and Adolescent Girls

    Get PDF
This research provides several insights into how preadolescent and adolescent girls use language to shape their identities and position themselves in stances of social power within their given communities of practice (Bucholtz, 1999). Specifically, it examines how female children participating in 4-H club activities are using language to build individual and group identities; how individual and group identity creation and recreation is managed through language use; how stances of power and hierarchies are created and managed through language use; how directives and indirectness are used to create and maintain social power; and how female children are modeling and employing language tactics based on knowledge acquired from adult displays of language use and exchange. The insights gained here are important because they inform us about how young girls in extracurricular situations are using language to build their identities and position themselves socially
