Studying the behavior of diuron in soil-water system. Use of cyclodextrins for soil remediation
Con el objetivo de estudiar el comportamiento del herbicida Diurón en el sistema suelo-agua, se realizaron ensayos de adsorción- desorción y de lixiviación en columnas de suelos. Para la adsorción del herbicida diurón en los suelos con propiedades físico-químicas diferentes, las variables significativas fueron la materia orgánica (MO), óxidos amorfos totales y la fracción arcilla. La desorción de los suelos presentó histéresis en todos los casos, aunque una histéresis positiva cuando se extrajo con Ca (NO3)2 y una histéresis negativa cuando se utilizó ciclodextrina (HPBCD). El porcentaje de diurón eluido en las columnas de suelos seleccionados alcanzó casi el 83,1% en un suelo arenoso con contenido en MO <1%, por el contrario, en el suelo con mayor contenido en MO, la cantidad eluida del herbicida fue sólo del 6,65%.In order to study the behavior of the herbicide Diuron in the soil-water system, adsorption- desorption tests and leaching in soil columns were performed. For the adsorption of diuron in soils with different physicochemical properties, significant variables were the organic matter (OM), total amorphous oxides and clay fraction. Soil desorption hysteresis was observed in all cases a positive hysteresis when extracted with Ca(NO3)2 and a negative hysteresis when cyclodextrin (HPBCD) was used. The percentage of diuron eluted from sore columns reached almost 83.1% in a sandy soil with OM <1%; on the contrary, in a soil with higher OM content, the amount of the herbicide eluted was 6.65%
Gain in Stochastic Resonance: Precise Numerics versus Linear Response Theory beyond the Two-Mode Approximation
In the context of the phenomenon of Stochastic Resonance (SR) we study the
correlation function, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the ratio of output
over input SNR, i.e. the gain, which is associated to the nonlinear response of
a bistable system driven by time-periodic forces and white Gaussian noise.
These quantifiers for SR are evaluated using the techniques of Linear Response
Theory (LRT) beyond the usually employed two-mode approximation scheme. We
analytically demonstrate within such an extended LRT description that the gain
can indeed not exceed unity. We implement an efficient algorithm, based on work
by Greenside and Helfand (detailed in the Appendix), to integrate the driven
Langevin equation over a wide range of parameter values. The predictions of LRT
are carefully tested against the results obtained from numerical solutions of
the corresponding Langevin equation over a wide range of parameter values. We
further present an accurate procedure to evaluate the distinct contributions of
the coherent and incoherent parts of the correlation function to the SNR and
the gain. As a main result we show for subthreshold driving that both, the
correlation function and the SNR can deviate substantially from the predictions
of LRT and yet, the gain can be either larger or smaller than unity. In
particular, we find that the gain can exceed unity in the strongly nonlinear
regime which is characterized by weak noise and very slow multifrequency
subthreshold input signals with a small duty cycle. This latter result is in
agreement with recent analogue simulation results by Gingl et al. in Refs. [18,

Stochastic synchronization in globally coupled phase oscillators
Cooperative effects of periodic force and noise in globally Cooperative
effects of periodic force and noise in globally coupled systems are studied
using a nonlinear diffusion equation for the number density. The amplitude of
the order parameter oscillation is enhanced in an intermediate range of noise
strength for a globally coupled bistable system, and the order parameter
oscillation is entrained to the external periodic force in an intermediate
range of noise strength. These enhancement phenomena of the response of the
order parameter in the deterministic equations are interpreted as stochastic
resonance and stochastic synchronization in globally coupled systems.Comment: 5 figure
Secondary messenger signalling influences Pseudomonas aeruginosa adaptation to sinus and lung environments
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a cause of chronic respiratory tract infections in people with cystic fibrosis (CF), non-CF bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Prolonged infection allows the accumulation of mutations and horizontal gene transfer, increasing the likelihood of adaptive phenotypic traits. Adaptation is proposed to arise first in bacterial populations colonizing upper airway environments. Here, we model this process using an experimental evolution approach. Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1, which is not airway adapted, was serially passaged, separately, in media chemically reflective of upper or lower airway environments. To explore whether the CF environment selects for unique traits, we separately passaged PAO1 in airway-mimicking media with or without CF-specific factors. Our findings demonstrated that all airway environments-sinus and lungs, under CF and non-CF conditions-selected for loss of twitching motility, increased resistance to multiple antibiotic classes, and a hyper-biofilm phenotype. These traits conferred increased airway colonization potential in an in vivo model. CF-like conditions exerted stronger selective pressures, leading to emergence of more pronounced phenotypes. Loss of twitching was associated with mutations in type IV pili genes. Type IV pili mediate surface attachment, twitching, and induction of cAMP signalling. We additionally identified multiple evolutionary routes to increased biofilm formation involving regulation of cyclic-di-GMP signalling. These included the loss of function mutations in bifA and dipA phosphodiesterase genes and activating mutations in the siaA phosphatase. These data highlight that airway environments select for traits associated with sessile lifestyles and suggest upper airway niches support emergence of phenotypes that promote establishment of lung infection.</p
Evolutionary Events in a Mathematical Sciences Research Collaboration Network
This study examines long-term trends and shifting behavior in the
collaboration network of mathematics literature, using a subset of data from
Mathematical Reviews spanning 1985-2009. Rather than modeling the network
cumulatively, this study traces the evolution of the "here and now" using
fixed-duration sliding windows. The analysis uses a suite of common network
diagnostics, including the distributions of degrees, distances, and clustering,
to track network structure. Several random models that call these diagnostics
as parameters help tease them apart as factors from the values of others. Some
behaviors are consistent over the entire interval, but most diagnostics
indicate that the network's structural evolution is dominated by occasional
dramatic shifts in otherwise steady trends. These behaviors are not distributed
evenly across the network; stark differences in evolution can be observed
between two major subnetworks, loosely thought of as "pure" and "applied",
which approximately partition the aggregate. The paper characterizes two major
events along the mathematics network trajectory and discusses possible

An Analytical Study of Coupled Two-State Stochastic Resonators
The two-state model of stochastic resonance is extended to a chain of coupled
two-state elements governed by the dynamics of Glauber's stochastic Ising
model. Appropriate assumptions on the model parameters turn the chain into a
prototype system of coupled stochastic resonators. In a weak-signal limit
analytical expressions are derived for the spectral power amplification and the
signal-to-noise ratio of a two-state element embedded into the chain. The
effect of the coupling between the elements on both quantities is analysed and
array-enhanced stochastic resonance is established for pure as well as noisy
periodic signals. The coupling-induced improvement of the SNR compared to an
uncoupled element is shown to be limited by a factor four which is only reached

Uninterrupted edoxaban vs. vitamin K antagonists for ablation of atrial fibrillation: the ELIMINATE-AF trial.
AIMS: Edoxaban is a direct factor Xa inhibitor approved for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF). Uninterrupted edoxaban therapy in patients undergoing AF ablation has not been tested. METHODS AND RESULTS: The ELIMINATE-AF trial, a multinational, multicentre, randomized, open-label, parallel-group study, was conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of once-daily edoxaban 60 mg (30 mg in patients indicated for dose reduction) vs. vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) in AF patients undergoing catheter ablation. Patients were randomized 2:1 to edoxaban vs. VKA. The primary endpoint (per-protocol population) was time to first occurrence of all-cause death, stroke, or International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis-defined major bleeding during the period from the end of the ablation procedure to end of treatment (90 days). Overall, 632 patients were enrolled, 614 randomized, and 553 received study drug and underwent ablation; 177 subjects underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging to assess silent cerebral infarcts. The primary endpoint (only major bleeds occurred) was observed in 0.3% (1 patient) on edoxaban and 2.0% (2 patients) on VKA [hazard ratio (95% confidence interval): 0.16 (0.02-1.73)]. In the ablation population (modified intent-to-treat population including patients with ablation), the primary endpoint was observed in 2.7% of edoxaban (N = 10) and 1.7% of VKA patients (N = 3) between start of ablation and end of treatment. There were one ischaemic and one haemorrhagic stroke, both in patients on edoxaban. Cerebral microemboli were detected in 13.8% (16) patients who received edoxaban and 9.6% (5) patients in the VKA group (nominal P = 0.62). CONCLUSION: Uninterrupted edoxaban therapy represents an alternative to uninterrupted VKA treatment in patients undergoing AF ablation
The Citation Field of Evolutionary Economics
Evolutionary economics has developed into an academic field of its own,
institutionalized around, amongst others, the Journal of Evolutionary Economics
(JEE). This paper analyzes the way and extent to which evolutionary economics
has become an interdisciplinary journal, as its aim was: a journal that is
indispensable in the exchange of expert knowledge on topics and using
approaches that relate naturally with it. Analyzing citation data for the
relevant academic field for the Journal of Evolutionary Economics, we use
insights from scientometrics and social network analysis to find that, indeed,
the JEE is a central player in this interdisciplinary field aiming mostly at
understanding technological and regional dynamics. It does not, however, link
firmly with the natural sciences (including biology) nor to management
sciences, entrepreneurship, and organization studies. Another journal that
could be perceived to have evolutionary acumen, the Journal of Economic Issues,
does relate to heterodox economics journals and is relatively more involved in
discussing issues of firm and industry organization. The JEE seems most keen to
develop theoretical insights
Does native Trypanosoma cruzi calreticulin mediate growth inhibition of a mammary tumor during infection?
Indexación: Web of Science.Background: For several decades now an antagonism between Trypanosoma cruzi infection and tumor development has been detected. The molecular basis of this phenomenon remained basically unknown until our proposal that T. cruzi Calreticulin (TcCRT), an endoplasmic reticulum-resident chaperone, translocated-externalized by the parasite, may mediate at least an important part of this effect. Thus, recombinant TcCRT (rTcCRT) has important in vivo antiangiogenic and antitumor activities. However, the relevant question whether the in vivo antitumor effect of T. cruzi infection is indeed mediated by the native chaperone (nTcCRT), remains open. Herein, by using specific modified anti-rTcCRT antibodies (Abs), we have neutralized the antitumor activity of T. cruzi infection and extracts thereof, thus identifying nTcCRT as a valid mediator of this effect.
Methods: Polyclonal anti-rTcCRT F(ab')(2) Ab fragments were used to reverse the capacity of rTcCRT to inhibit EAhy926 endothelial cell (EC) proliferation, as detected by BrdU uptake. Using these F(ab')(2) fragments, we also challenged the capacity of nTcCRT, during T. cruzi infection, to inhibit the growth of an aggressive mammary adenocarcinoma cell line (TA3-MTXR) in mice. Moreover, we determined the capacity of anti-rTcCRT Abs to reverse the antitumor effect of an epimastigote extract (EE). Finally, the effects of these treatments on tumor histology were evaluated.
Results: The rTcCRT capacity to inhibit ECs proliferation was reversed by anti-rTcCRT F(ab')(2) Ab fragments, thus defining them as valid probes to interfere in vivo with this important TcCRT function. Consequently, during infection, these Ab fragments also reversed the in vivo experimental mammary tumor growth. Moreover, anti-rTcCRT Abs also neutralized the antitumor effect of an EE, again identifying the chaperone protein as an important mediator of this anti mammary tumor effect. Finally, as determined by conventional histological parameters, in infected animals and in those treated with EE, less invasive tumors were observed while, as expected, treatment with F(ab')(2) Ab fragments increased malignancy.
Conclusion: We have identified translocated/externalized nTcCRT as responsible for at least an important part of the anti mammary tumor effect of the chaperone observed during experimental infections with T. cruzi.http://bmccancer.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12885-016-2764-
