    Prolonged enoxaparin therapy compared with standard-of-care antithrombotic therapy in opiate-treated patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention

    A novel enoxaparin regimen consisting of intra-arterial bolus (0.75 mg/kg) followed by intravenous infusion (0.75 mg/kg/6 hours) has been developed as a possible solution to the delayed absorption of oral P2Y12 inhibitors in opiate-treated ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients undergoing primary angioplasty. We aimed to study the feasibility of this regimen as an alternative to standard-of-care treatment (SOC) with unfractionated heparin ± glycoprotein IIb/IIIa antagonist (GPI). One hundred opiate-treated patients presenting with STEMI and accepted for primary angioplasty were randomized (1:1) to either enoxaparin or SOC. Fifty patients were allocated enoxaparin (median age 61, 40% females) and 49 allocated SOC (median age 62, 22% females). One developed stroke before angiography and was withdrawn. One SOC patient had a gastrointestinal bleed resulting in 1 g drop in hemoglobin and early cessation of GPI infusion. Two enoxaparin patients had transient minor bleeding: one transient gingival bleed and one episode of coffee ground vomit with no hemoglobin drop or hemodynamic instability. Two SOC and no enoxaparin group patients had acute stent thrombosis. These preliminary data support further study of this novel 6-hour enoxaparin regimen in opiate-treated PPCI patients

    Nutritional value of suckler beef from temperate pasture systems

    The role of beef in human diets has been questioned over the last few decades, due largely to its typically high mass-based carbon footprint. However, recent advancements in sustainability literature challenge this paradigm based on the new theory that climate impacts of food commodities should be measured relative to their overall nutritional value rather than their nominal mass. This shift has opened a new opportunity for the global beef industry, and especially for pasture-based systems that can avoid food-feed competition for land and other resources, as beef is a nutritionally dense food. Nonetheless, the sector’s true capability to supply a wide range of nutrients for humans, consistently across multiple systems under multiple weather patterns, has not been well-documented. Using whole-system datasets from the North Wyke Farm Platform in the South West of England, we investigated the nutritional value of beef produced from the three most common pasture systems in temperate regions: permanent pasture (PP), grass and white clover (GWC) and a short-term monoculture grass ley (MG). Beef produced from these three pasture systems was analysed for key nutrients (fatty acids, minerals and vitamin E) over three production cycles (2015–2017) to determine potential differences between systems. Fatty acid, mineral and vitamin E profiles of the pasture and silage fed to each group were also assessed, with subtle differences between pastures reported. For beef, subtle differences were also observed between systems, with GWC having higher omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) concentrations than PP and MG. However, the overall nutritional quality of beef was found to be largely comparable across all systems, suggesting that temperate pasture-based beef can be classified as a single commodity in future sustainability assessments, regardless of specific sward types. A 100 g serving of temperate pasture-based beef was found to be a high source (>20% recommended daily intake: RDI) of protein, monounsaturated fatty acids, saturated fatty acids, vitamins – B2, B3, B12 and minerals – Fe, P, Zn; a good source (10–19% RDI) of vitamin – B6 and mineral – K; and a complementary source (5–9% RDI) of omega-3 PUFA, vitamin – B9 and minerals – Cu, Mg, Se. The nutritional value of a food item should be used in defining its environmental cost (e.g. carbon footprint) to make fair comparisons across different food groups (e.g. protein sources).     Black-hole quasinormal modes and scalar glueballs in a finite-temperature AdS/QCD model

    We use the holographic AdS/QCD soft-wall model to investigate the spectrum of scalar glueballs in a finite temperature plasma. In this model, glueballs are described by a massless scalar field in an AdS_5 black hole with a dilaton soft-wall background. Using AdS/CFT prescriptions, we compute the boundary retarded Green's function. The corresponding thermal spectral function shows quasiparticle peaks at low temperatures. We also compute the quasinormal modes of the scalar field in the soft-wall black hole geometry. The temperature and momentum dependences of these modes are analyzed. The positions and widths of the peaks of the spectral function are related to the frequencies of the quasinormal modes. Our numerical results are found employing the power series method and the computation of Breit-Wigner resonances.Comment: Revision: Results unchanged.     The Muonium Atom as a Probe of Physics beyond the Standard Model

    The observed interactions between particles are not fully explained in the successful theoretical description of the standard model to date. Due to the close confinement of the bound state muonium (M=μ+eM = \mu^+ e^-) can be used as an ideal probe of quantum electrodynamics and weak interaction and also for a search for additional interactions between leptons.     New Structural Insights into the Genome and Minor Capsid Proteins of BK Polyomavirus using Cryo-Electron Microscopy

    BK polyomavirus is the causative agent of several diseases in transplant patients and the immunosuppressed. In order to better understand the structure and life cycle of BK, we produced infectious virions and VP1-only virus-like particles in cell culture, and determined their three-dimensional structures using cryo-electron microscopy (EM) and single-particle image processing. The resulting 7.6-Å resolution structure of BK and 9.1-Å resolution of the virus-like particles are the highest-resolution cryo-EM structures of any polyomavirus. These structures confirm that the architecture of the major structural protein components of these human polyomaviruses are similar to previous structures from other hosts, but give new insight into the location and role of the enigmatic minor structural proteins, VP2 and VP3. We also observe two shells of electron density, which we attribute to a structurally ordered part of the viral genome, and discrete contacts between this density and both VP1 and the minor capsid proteins

    A CsI(Tl) Scintillating Crystal Detector for the Studies of Low Energy Neutrino Interactions

    Scintillating crystal detector may offer some potential advantages in the low-energy, low-background experiments. A 500 kg CsI(Tl) detector to be placed near the core of Nuclear Power Station II in Taiwan is being constructed for the studies of electron-neutrino scatterings and other keV-MeV range neutrino interactions. The motivations of this detector approach, the physics to be addressed, the basic experimental design, and the characteristic performance of prototype modules are described.     Sulfonated Styrene-(ethylene-co-butylene)-styrene/Montmorillonite Clay Nanocomposites: Synthesis, Morphology, and Properties

    Sulfonated styrene-(ethylene-butylene)-styrene triblock copolymer (SSEBS) was synthesized by reaction of acetyl sulfate with SEBS. SSESB-clay nanocomposites were then prepared from hydrophilic Na-montmorillonite (MT) and organically (quaternary amine) modified hydrophobic nanoclay (OMT) at very low loading. SEBS did not show improvement in properties with MT-based nanocomposites. On sulfonation (3 and 6 weight%) of SEBS, hydrophilic MT clay-based nanocomposites exhibited better mechanical, dynamic mechanical, and thermal properties, and also controlled water–methanol mixture uptake and permeation and AC resistance. Microstructure determined by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy due to better dispersion of MT nanoclay particles and interaction of MT with SSEBS matrix was responsible for this effect. The resulting nanocomposites have potential as proton transfer membranes for Fuel Cell applications

    Study of two dose regimens of ticagrelor compared with clopidogrel in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention for stable coronary artery disease

    Background—Ticagrelor has superior efficacy to clopidogrel in the management of acute coronary syndromes but has not been assessed in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for stable coronary artery disease (CAD). We compared the pharmacodynamic effects of ticagrelor and clopidogrel in this stable population. Methods—180 aspirin-treated stable CAD patients, who were planned to undergo elective PCI in a single center, were randomized 1:1:1 to either a standard clopidogrel regimen or one of two regimens of ticagrelor, either 90mg (T90) or 60mg twice-daily (T60), both with 180mg loading dose. Cellular adenosine uptake was assessed, at the time of the procedure and pre- and post-dose at 1 month, by adding adenosine 1 μmol/L to aliquots of anticoagulated whole blood and mixing with a stop solution at 0, 15, 30 and 60 seconds then measuring residual plasma adenosine concentration by high-performance liquid chromatography. Systemic plasma adenosine concentration and platelet reactivity were assessed at the same timepoints. High-sensitivity troponin T (hsTnT) was measured pre- and 18-24 hours post-PCI. Results—174 patients underwent an invasive procedure, of which 162 patients received PCI (mean age 65 years, 18% female, 21% with diabetes mellitus). No effect on in vitro adenosine uptake was seen post-dose at 1 month for either ticagrelor dose compared with clopidogrel (residual adenosine at 15s, mean ± SD: clopidogrel 0.274 ± 0.101 μmol/L; T90 0.278 ± 0.134 μmol/L; T60 0.288 ± 0.149 μmol/L; P = 0.37). Similarly no effect of ticagrelor on in vitro adenosine uptake was seen at other timepoints, nor was plasma adenosine concentration affected (all P > 0.1). Both maintenance doses of ticagrelor achieved more potent and consistent platelet inhibition than clopidogrel (VerifyNow PRU, 1 month, mean ± SD: pre-dose, T60: 62 ± 47, T90: 40 ± 38, clopidogrel 181 ± 44; post-dose, T60: 34 ± 30, T90: 24 ± 21, clopidogrel 159 ± 57; all P 208, 1-month post-dose: 0%, 0% and 21%, respectively). Median (IQR) hsTnT increase was 16.9 (6.5-46.9) ng/l for clopidogrel, 22.4 (5.5-53.8) ng/L for T60 and 17.7 (8.1-43.5) ng/L for T90 (P = 0.95). There was a trend towards less dyspnea with T60 versus T90 (7.1% vs 19.0%; P = 0.09). Conclusions—Maintenance therapy with T60 or T90 had no detectable effect on cellular adenosine uptake at 1 month, nor was there any effect on systemic plasma adenosine levels. Both regimens of ticagrelor achieved greater and more consistent platelet inhibition than clopidogrel but did not appear to affect troponin release after percutaneous coronary interventio
