Physical properties of single-crystalline fibers of the colossal-magnetoresistance manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3

    Get PDF
We have grown high-quality single crystals of the colossal-magnetoresistance (CMR) material La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 by using the laser heated pedestal growth (LHPG) method. Samples were grown as fibers of different diameters, and with lengths of the order of centimeters. Their composition and structure were verified through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microcopy with EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis) and by Rietveld analysis. The quality of the crystalline fibers was confirmed by Laue and EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction) patterns. Rocking curves performed along the fiber axis revealed a half-height width of 0.073 degrees. The CMR behavior was confirmed by electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements as a function of temperature.Comment: 11 pages (including 3 figures); to appear in Appl. Phys. Let

Perceived changes in well-being and happiness with gardening in urban organic allotments in Portugal

    Get PDF
Urban allotment gardens (AG) in Portugal have increased in recent years, as in many other European countries and worldwide. The contribution of these gardens to the happiness and well-being of urban populations has been recognized, but evaluations of their benefits are still very scarce. The objective of this study was to evaluate this contribution, based on the urban organic AG of the Devesa Park in Vila Nova de Famalic?o, Portugal. The sample included 65 gardeners who completed the self-administered questionnaires of Bem-Estar Pessoal (personal well-being scale), Felicidade Subjetiva (subjective happiness scale) and sociodemographic characteristics. Respondents were mainly adults under 65 years, married and academically well qualified and about half of them had a professional activity, with nearly one third being retired. They considered themselves happy with their life (Personal Wellbeing Index = 74.5%) and revealed an optimistic and positive attitude towards life, regardless of economic or social difficulties. The increased frequency of visits for gardening was positively related to a greater perception of subjective happiness. The gardeners who visited the AG more frequently considered themselves happier from a self-perspective and in comparison with peers. It can be suggested that urban organic AG represent a means for enhancing citizen well-being, contributing positively to their feelings of happiness and life satisfaction, changing behaviours and developing personal capacities. Beyond economic measures, urban AG can be recommended to capture the well-being of societies.6B1D-516F-1A2A | Lu?s Miguel Cortez Mesquita de BritoN/

Edible coatings from galactomannans and their application to tropical fruits

    Get PDF
Edible coatings play an important role in the quality and in the resistance to transportation, storage and display of a wide range of fresh and processed foods. Polysaccharide coatings with an oil-free appearance and low caloric content can be used to increase the shelf life of fresh fruits, since they allow the modification of the internal gas composition of fruits, retarding their senescence. The objective of this work was to study the ability of seed galactomannans, with different manose:galactose relation, from the Leguminosae Caesalpinea pulcherrima (2.8:1) and Adenanthera pavonina (2:1) as coatings to extend the shelf life of acerola (Malpighia emarginata), cajá (Spondias lutea), mango (Mangifera indica), pitanga (Eugenia uniflora) and sirigüela (Spondias purpurea). Fresh fruits surface properties, galactomannans relative viscosity as well as the wetting capacity of the coatings were determined. Galactomannans were obtained from seed endosperm and their toxicological safety was determined by oral administration to Wistar adult rats. No toxic effects were detected. Blends with different galactomannan:glycerol proportions were tested as coatings. The blends wettability was determined by the spreading coefficient using the sessile-drop method. The best proportions of galactomannan/glycerol were determined for coatings of C.pulcherrima and A.pavonina in the various fruits tested.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) ; Alfa-Valnatura; CNPq; CAPES; FUNCAP.Alfa-Valnatur
