Learning with Women in Grassroots Movements

To survive. This is the main battleground of peripheric bodies (body-territory), particularly indigenous, black, poor and trans* women. By adopting a transdisciplinary and mixed methodology, this research conducts decolonial excavations, traces genealogies of discourse, and pays attention to the oral histories of women (body-archive) engaged in grassroots movements in Brazil. Bearing on that, the dissertation proposes a decolonial and feminist epistemology for confronting the epistemicide of the knowledges produced by women from Latin America. Initially, the work frames the interplay of law and violence through the category of feminicide. In this territoriality, the edges of the legal mainstream approach to violence are identified with the term, “front door of violence”, that the research firstly delineates, and then purposes to pass through it. In this way, the work moves from the surface of the debate on violence to excavate the undergrounds of modernity. The mapped genealogies situate the notion of “othering” as a mechanism of political extermination of Others, a process that has shaped and been shaped by legal discourse. By blurring the binary divisions of modernity, this dissertation traces the joints that articulate body to territory; private to public; reproduction to production; micropolitics to macropolitics; family to nation; difference to equality. By exposing the formation of constitutional democracy, the analysis finally faces the current crisis of the neocolonial structures of society. Instead of adopting the paralyzing grammar of apocalypse or backlash, the work frames the crisis as a potential locus for political disputes and for conceptual redefinitions. In this way, the study brings to the center five major disputes carried out by peripheric women concerning the issues of: politics of rights, (neo)colonial division of labor, feminicide, the legal system, and institutional politics. The movements of speaking, naming, working, organizing, defining, occupying, representing are embodied by this work as cartographies of survival

ROLE OF GLYCEROL-3-PHOSPHATE PERMEASES IN PLANT DEFENSE

Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) is a type of plant defense mechanism that is induced after a localized infection and confers broad-spectrum immunity against related or unrelated pathogens. During SAR, a number of chemical signals and proteins generated at the site of primary infection travel to the uninfected tissues and are thought to alert the distal sites against secondary infections. Glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) is one of the chemical signals that play an important role in SAR. G3P is synthesized in the cytosol and chloroplasts via the enzymatic activities of G3P Dehydrogenase (G3Pdh) or Glycerol Kinase (GK). Interestingly, a mutation in three of the five G3Pdh isoforms or GK impairs SAR by lowering the pathogen induced G3P pool. This suggests that total cellular pool of G3P is critical for SAR. To determine factors contributing to G3P flux between various subcellular compartments I analyzed the role of putative G3P transporters in G3P flux and SAR. The Arabidopsis genome encodes five isoforms of G3P Permeases (G3Pp) and these transmembrane proteins are predicted to localize to plasma membrane, chloroplast or mitochondria. At least two G3Pp isoforms (G3Pp1 and G3Pp3) were able to complement the Escherichia coli mutant impaired in the uptake of G3P into the cytoplasm. Characterization of Arabidopsis G3Pp mutants showed that a mutation in G3Pp2, G3Pp3 and G3Pp4 compromised SAR but not local resistance. Furthermore, this SAR defect could only be complemented by exogenous application of G3P. The G3Pp mutants accumulated wild-type-like levels of G3P suggesting that the subcellular compartmentalization of G3P might contribute to the induction of SAR

Multilingual Schema Matching for Wikipedia Infoboxes

Recent research has taken advantage of Wikipedia's multilingualism as a resource for cross-language information retrieval and machine translation, as well as proposed techniques for enriching its cross-language structure. The availability of documents in multiple languages also opens up new opportunities for querying structured Wikipedia content, and in particular, to enable answers that straddle different languages. As a step towards supporting such queries, in this paper, we propose a method for identifying mappings between attributes from infoboxes that come from pages in different languages. Our approach finds mappings in a completely automated fashion. Because it does not require training data, it is scalable: not only can it be used to find mappings between many language pairs, but it is also effective for languages that are under-represented and lack sufficient training samples. Another important benefit of our approach is that it does not depend on syntactic similarity between attribute names, and thus, it can be applied to language pairs that have distinct morphologies. We have performed an extensive experimental evaluation using a corpus consisting of pages in Portuguese, Vietnamese, and English. The results show that not only does our approach obtain high precision and recall, but it also outperforms state-of-the-art techniques. We also present a case study which demonstrates that the multilingual mappings we derive lead to substantial improvements in answer quality and coverage for structured queries over Wikipedia content.Comment: VLDB201

A new species of Diaphorocleidus (Monogenea: Ancyrocephalinae) from the gills of Argonectes robertsi (Characiformes) and new records of dactylogyrids parasitic on fishes from the Xingu River, Amazon Basin, Brazil

ABSTRACT Diaphorocleidus altamirensis sp. nov., parasitic on the gills of Argonectes robertsi Langeani, 1999 from the Xingu River, northern Brazil, is described. The new species differs from its six congeners by the morphology of the male copulatory organ (which comprises a coil of six rings), by the midventral vagina, and by the presence of only one pair of eyespots. It is the first species of Diaphorocleidus Jogunoori, Kritsky & Venkatanarasaiah, 2004 described from hemiodontid fishes. In addition, new host and geographical records of seven species of dactylogyrids found on fish from the Xingu River are reported
