Remittances, Inequality and Poverty: Evidence from Rural Mexico
Economic research has produced conflicting findings on the distributional impacts of migrant remittances, and there has been little research on the effects of changes in remittances on poverty. This paper utilizes new data from the Mexico National Rural Household Survey, together with inequality and poverty decomposition techniques, to explore the impacts of remittances on rural inequality and poverty. Our findings suggest that remittances from international migrants become more equalizing (or less unequalizing), as well as more effective at reducing poverty, as the prevalence of migration increases.Labor and Human Capital,
Charter Schools, Market Capitalism, and Obama\u27s Neo-liberal Agenda
The contributors to this special issue of The Journal of Inquiry and Action provide insight into why the Obama administration’s educational policies manifest the dominance of neoliberal ideology over most elements of social life. The articles presented herein build on the work originally presented in The Phenomenon of Obama and the agenda for Education: Can hope audaciously trump neoliberalism? (Carr & Porfilio, 2011)
Buckling of a compliant hollow cylinder attached to a rotating rigid shaft
International audienceBifurcations in the equilibrium shape of a thick elastic layer attached to a circular rigid cylinder rotating about its axis are investigated analytically and numerically. The centrifugal force breaks the symmetry of the system leading to deformations invariant along the axis as the result of an instability. The instability threshold depends at linear order on the relative thickness of the compliant layer, and on a dimensionless control parameter based on the elastic modulus, the angular velocity and the outer radius. A weakly non linear analysis, carried out for layers following the Mooney-Rivlin constitutive law, points out the discon-tinuous (sub-critical) features of the bifurcation, except for relative thickness laying in a very narrow range in which the bifurcation is super-critical. Numerical simulations in the fully post-buckled regime yield the absolute instability threshold, and the order in the rotational symmetry of the developed equilibrium shape

Stellar Populations and Star Cluster Formation in Interacting Galaxies with the Advanced Camera for Surveys
Pixel-by-pixel colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams - based on a
subset of the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys Early Release
Observations - provide a powerful technique to explore and deduce the star and
star cluster formation histories of the Mice and the Tadpole interacting
galaxies. In each interacting system we find some 40 bright young star clusters
(20 <= F606W (mag) <= 25, with a characteristic mass of ~3 x 10^6 Msun), which
are spatially coincident with blue regions of active star formation in their
tidal tails and spiral arms. We estimate that the main events triggering the
formation of these clusters occurred ~(1.5-2.0) x 10^8 yr ago. We show that
star cluster formation is a major mode of star formation in galaxy
interactions, with >= 35% of the active star formation in encounters occurring
in star clusters. This is the first time that young star clusters have been
detected along the tidal tails in interacting galaxies. The tidal tail of the
Tadpole system is dominated by blue star forming regions, which occupy some 60%
of the total area covered by the tail and contribute ~70% of the total flux in
the F475W filter (decreasing to ~40% in F814W). The remaining pixels in the
tail have colours consistent with those of the main disk. The tidally triggered
burst of star formation in the Mice is of similar strength in both interacting
galaxies, but it has affected only relatively small, spatially coherent areas.Comment: 23 pages in preprint form, 6 (encapsulated) postscript figures;

Estimation of Tracheid Morphological Characteristics of Green Pinus Taeda L. Radial Strips by Near Infrared Spectroscopy
The application of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to the green wood of radial samples (simulated increment cores) and the development of calibrations for the prediction of several tracheid morphological characteristics are described. Twenty Pinus taeda L. (loblolly pine) radial samples were characterized in terms of coarseness, perimeter, radial and tangential diameter, specific surface, and wall thickness. NIR spectra were obtained in 10-mm steps from the radial-longitudinal and transverse face of each sample and were used to generate calibrations for each property. NIR spectra were collected from all samples when the wood was green (moisture content ranged from approximately 100 to 154%), and when dried to approximately 7% moisture content. The relationships between measured and NIR-estimates for green wood were strong for coarseness, specific surface, and wall thickness, with coefficients of determination (R2) ranging from 0.89 to 0.73. Differences between calibrations developed using radial-longitudinal and transverse face NIR spectra were generally small. Dry wood calibrations demonstrated strong relationships for all parameters apart from perimeter and radial diameter; R2 ranged from 0.59 to 0.91. Calibrations were tested on an independent set; relationships for coarseness, specific surface, and wall thickness were strong. Good calibrations can be obtained for some tracheid morphological characteristics using NIR spectra collected from the surface of green P. taeda wood
Insulin Pumps: Beyond Basal-Bolus
Insulin pumps are a major advance in diabetes management, making insulin dosing easier and more accurate and providing great flexibility, safety, and efficacy for people who need basal-bolus insulin therapy. They are the preferred treatment for people with type 1 diabetes and many with type 2 diabetes who require insulin. This article reviews the basics of how insulin pumps work, who benefits from a pump, and how to manage inpatients and outpatients on insulin pumps
This paper presents a comparison of the results obtaines through the Interpersonal Relations
subscale of the Family Environment Scale (Moos & Moos, 1981) in Mexico and
England. The main objective is to demonstrate that there are differences between both
countries regarding how families perceive cohesion and conflict in the light of the
colectivism-individualism construct. The sample studied was integrated by 107 individuals
from separate families from Mexico City and 100 individuals from South West England;
all of them had lived with an alcohol or drug user. Through exploratory factor
analysis two factors were found, one of them related to positive aspects of the family
environment (cohesion) and a second factor which denotes conflict. The confirmatory
factor analysis demonstrated that both factors are inversely related. Other correlations
indicate higher risk for alcohol consumption in families with high cohesion and high risk
for drug use in families with a large number of members. Later, variance analysis corroborates
that relatives of alcohol users perceive higher cohesion than relatives of drug users.
Furthermore, it was observed that English relatives report higher scores in some items of
the cohesion subscale while Mexican relatives scored higher on 2 items of the conflict
subscale. These results might reflect different situations occurring within the family depending
on the number or members and the extent of their agreements to cope with substance
use.
Environment Scale [FES], Moos & Moos, 1981).
