Type-casting in the Restoration theatre: Dryden’s "All for Love",1677-1704

The paper analyzes the use of type-casting as a strategy to define character and character relationships on the Restoration stage. Contrasting the original cast of Dryden’s All for Love (1677) with that of the 1704 revival, it argues that the choice of actresses for the main female parts in each production reveals a different conception of the play. In the 1677 performance, the pairing of Elizabeth Boutell as Cleopatra with the domineering presence of Katherine Corey (Octavia) turns the adulterous mistress into an innocent heroine and places her at the moral centre of the tragedy; this move seems designed to counteract the criticism of the king’s behaviour implicit in Sedley’s Antony and Cleopatra, performed only a few months before. The 1704 production marks a significant shift: although Elizabeth Barry in the role of Cleopatra would create a character full of passion and pathos, the casting of Anne Bracegirdle as Octavia checks this effect, and indicates that it is the forsaken wife who is now identified as the virtuous heroine. This cast redefines the relationship between the central characters, and brings the play in line with the moral values represented by the court of Queen Anne

In the current article, the author deals with the comprehension of the falling in love as a psychological fact of undeniable sociological importance. He presents a first approach to everything relating to its nature, predominantly erotic. Subsequently he revises the main and best-known theories on it and he criticizes some of these theories. He establishes the concept of “encrusted love”. And finally, based on the Freudian theories and on Castilla del Pino’s theory of feelings, he exposes the falling in love as a process across different phases, explained in a didactic way

In his Encyclical Letter “Deus caritas est”, Pope vindicated the value of Eros that had been ignored for centuries, badly equated with Agape, which came to represent the novelty and excellence of the Gospel message. This work is focused on Eros, rather than a specific type of love, as generator of attraction between the sexes, great springs of human passions designed to the noble aim of forging marriages. It prosecutes the meeting point of Eros with Agape, established by this Pope, and describes the erotic passion in a stage prior to the sexual act, and eventually it reflects the emotions of intercourse, which are, or have to be, paradigmatic when they occur within the marriage. Finally, the main forms of overflowing and destroying conjugal Eros are described

The purpose of this essay is to show the influence of Freudian psychoanalysis, especially in its first phase over the first half of last century, so that an unprecedented change of the first order on the habits and sexual customs all over the civilized occident took place. This is an unwarranted change, which confuses the man in his ethical opinions and also affects other aspects of his mentality. This influence is still active, although less conspicuous, in the socio-political movements that seek to drag humanity toward a new World order

    Masculinidad-feminidad, hoy

This study deals with the masculinity-femininity issue against the background of the new concepts that gender ideology has established. The idea of a sexed personality independent of a sexed body is rejected, because of the psycophysical harmony that must exist between both components of the person. The E. Kretschmer’s theory of constitutional groups, that established the assotiation between temperament and body typology, is a benchmark and, in the same way, the neuroanatomical discoveries that show significant differences between the brain of the man and that of the woman are exposed. Researches that indicate a differentiated psychology between both sexes in very small children and even in newborn children are described. And likewise, the environmental influence in the configuration of the sexed personality is asserted. The main features that define masculine and feminine personalities are reasoned about. Finally, it is argued in favour of the existence, in the personality, of a sexed innate core, in accordance with Biology, over which other psychic characters would be superposed under the cultural and educational influence.notPeerReviewe

New pixellation scheme for CT algebraic reconstruction to exploit matrix symmetries

In this article we propose a new pixellation scheme which makes it possible to speed up the time of reconstruction. This proposal consists in splitting the field of view of the scanner into as many circular sectors as rotation positions of the detector. The sectors are pixellated using circular pixels whose size is always smaller than the resolution needed. The geometry of the pixels and the arrangement on circular sectors make it possible to compute the entire matrix from only one position of the scanner. Therefore, the size of the matrix decreases as many times as the number of rotations. This results in a significant reduction of the system matrix which allows algebraic methods to be applied within a reasonable time of reconstruction and speeds up the time of matrix generation. The new model is studied by means of analytical CT simulations which are reconstructed using the Maximum Likelihood Emission Maximization algorithm for transmission tomography and is compared to the cartesian pixellation model. Therefore, two different grids of pixels were developed for the same scanner geometry: one that employs circular pixels within a cartesian grid and another that divides the field of view into a polar grid which is composed by identical sectors, with circular pixels too. The results of both models are that polar matrix is built in a few seconds and the cartesian one needs several hours, the size of the matrix is significantly smaller than the circular one, and the time of reconstruction per iteration using the same iterative method is less in the polar pixel model than in the square pixel model. Several figures of merit have been computed in order to compare the original phantom with the reconstructed images. Finally, we can conclude that both reconstructions have been proved to have enough quality but, the polar pixel model is more efficient than the square pixel model. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd.
