    A study of the temporal changes recorded by ERTS and their geological significance

    The temporal changes that are recorded by ERTS were evaluated for an area around Bathurst Inlet in the North West Territories. The seasons represented by the images included: early winter, spring, early summer, summer, and fall. Numerous surface characteristics (vegetation, drainage patterns, surface texture, lineament systems and topographic relief, etc.) were used to relate the change in observable features with the different seasons. It was found that the time of year when an observation is made has a strong control over the amount and type of information that can be derived by an experienced interpreter. It was concluded that a detailed study of temporal changes is an important part of any ERTS interpretation for geology

    Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal resummation for dilepton production

    We consider the thermal emission rate of dileptons from a QCD plasma in the small invariant mass (Q^2 \sim \gs^2 T^2) but large energy (q^0 \gsim T) range. We derive an integral equation which resums multiple scatterings to include the LPM effect; it is valid at leading order in the coupling. Then we recast it as a differential equation and show a simple algorithm for its solution.     Parallel Metric Tree Embedding based on an Algebraic View on Moore-Bellman-Ford

    A \emph{metric tree embedding} of expected \emph{stretch~α1\alpha \geq 1} maps a weighted nn-node graph G=(V,E,ω)G = (V, E, \omega) to a weighted tree T=(VT,ET,ωT)T = (V_T, E_T, \omega_T) with VVTV \subseteq V_T such that, for all v,wVv,w \in V, dist(v,w,G)dist(v,w,T)\operatorname{dist}(v, w, G) \leq \operatorname{dist}(v, w, T) and operatornameE[dist(v,w,T)]αdist(v,w,G)operatorname{E}[\operatorname{dist}(v, w, T)] \leq \alpha \operatorname{dist}(v, w, G). Such embeddings are highly useful for designing fast approximation algorithms, as many hard problems are easy to solve on tree instances. However, to date the best parallel (polylogn)(\operatorname{polylog} n)-depth algorithm that achieves an asymptotically optimal expected stretch of αO(logn)\alpha \in \operatorname{O}(\log n) requires Ω(n2)\operatorname{\Omega}(n^2) work and a metric as input. In this paper, we show how to achieve the same guarantees using polylogn\operatorname{polylog} n depth and O~(m1+ϵ)\operatorname{\tilde{O}}(m^{1+\epsilon}) work, where m=Em = |E| and ϵ>0\epsilon > 0 is an arbitrarily small constant. Moreover, one may further reduce the work to O~(m+n1+ϵ)\operatorname{\tilde{O}}(m + n^{1+\epsilon}) at the expense of increasing the expected stretch to O(ϵ1logn)\operatorname{O}(\epsilon^{-1} \log n). Our main tool in deriving these parallel algorithms is an algebraic characterization of a generalization of the classic Moore-Bellman-Ford algorithm. We consider this framework, which subsumes a variety of previous "Moore-Bellman-Ford-like" algorithms, to be of independent interest and discuss it in depth. In our tree embedding algorithm, we leverage it for providing efficient query access to an approximate metric that allows sampling the tree using polylogn\operatorname{polylog} n depth and O~(m)\operatorname{\tilde{O}}(m) work. We illustrate the generality and versatility of our techniques by various examples and a number of additional results

    Time, action and psychosis: using subjective time to investigate the effects of ketamine on sense of agency

    Sense of agency refers to the experience of initiating and controlling actions in order to influence events in the outside world. A disturbed sense of agency is found in certain psychiatric and neurological disorders, most notably schizophrenia. Sense of agency is associated with a subjective compression of time: actions and their outcomes are perceived as bound together in time. This is known as ‘intentional binding’ and, in healthy adults, depends partly on advance prediction of action outcomes. Notably, this predictive contribution is disrupted in patients with schizophrenia. In the present study we aimed to characterise the psychotomimetic effect of ketamine, a drug model for psychosis, on the predictive contribution to intentional binding. It was shown that ketamine produced a disruption that closely resembled previous data from patients in the early, prodromal, stage of schizophrenic illness. These results are discussed in terms of established models of delusion formation in schizophrenia. The link between time and agency, more generally, is also considered

    A System for Accessible Artificial Intelligence

    While artificial intelligence (AI) has become widespread, many commercial AI systems are not yet accessible to individual researchers nor the general public due to the deep knowledge of the systems required to use them. We believe that AI has matured to the point where it should be an accessible technology for everyone. We present an ongoing project whose ultimate goal is to deliver an open source, user-friendly AI system that is specialized for machine learning analysis of complex data in the biomedical and health care domains.     Theory of superradiant scattering of laser light from Bose-Einstein condensates

    In a recent MIT experiment, a new form of superradiant Rayleigh scattering was observed in Bose-Einstein condensates. We present a detailed theory of this phenomena in which the directional dependence of the scattering rate and condensate depletion lead to mode competition which is ultimately responsible for superradiance.
