The Veil of Nationalism: Frantz Fanon’s ‘Algeria Unveiled’ and Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers

Women’s relationship to anti-colonial nationalism has been a problematic one, in that nationalist movements have tended to employ both women and feminist discourses strategically.1 This phenomenon is far from limited to the Muslim or Arab worlds.2 Nor is nationalism the only ideology to intersect uneasily with women’s interests in the region. However, work produced by feminist scholars grounded experientially in the region suggests that contestation between nationalisms and feminisms in North Africa and the Middle East has been extreme (see Hatem, Kandiyoti, Lasreg 1994 ch7, Moghadam and Moallem)

Social Workers\u27 Ethical Responsibilities as Advocates for Immigrants

the past decade, immigration policy has become the subject of a fiery nationwide debate, with policymakers and lobbyists going head-to-head as policy reform is discussed. As a worrisome trend has emerged in which national security concerns are being prioritized over human rights concerns, it has become necessary that social workers get involved, as well. Due to the professional values and ethical standards laid out in the National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics, social workers are ethically obligated to engage in this discussion and advocate for fair and just policies on behalf of immigrants. Based off an understanding of these ethical obligations, this thesis seeks to evaluate social workers’ performance in this discussion by examining current literature and the responses of practitioners and professional organizations. It is concluded that social workers have been startlingly absent from this discussion and that social work education has left workers ill-equipped to engage in this reform, due to a lack of understanding of immigrant/immigration policies and a lack of advocacy training. It is argued that social work education must expand beyond teaching cultural competence to teaching workers how to understand harmful immigration policies and fight against them at the macro level

Looted Art: The Case of the Parthenon Sculptures

Many artifacts which comprise private and museum collections today were possibly stolen from their country of origin and illegally smuggled into the country in which they now reside. In the late eighteenth century, the global powers of England and France exercised their authority over less powerful countries, such as Greece and Egypt, by exporting those countries’ traditional artifacts. Now, the governments of the less dominant countries no longer dismiss the pieces as useless artifacts, but view them as valuable cultural objects. The number of countries attempting to regain possession of lost artifacts from private and museum collections was recently increased. The archetypal case of the repatriation of looted art is the controversy over the sculptures of the Parthenon, better known as the “Elgin Marbles.” The sculptures have been located in the British Museum in London for the past 200 years and the Greek government is continually requesting the marble sculptures to be returned. By closely examining this specific issue and similar cases, I present an in-depth portrait of the trend for the repatriation of looted artifacts

Retaining the Next Generation of Nurses: The Wisconsin Nurse Residency Program Provides a Continuum of Support

    Get PDF
Because of the high costs associated with new graduate nurse turnover, an academic-service partnership developed a nurse residency program that provides a comprehensive support system that spans 15 months. Now in its fourth year, involving more than 50 urban and rural hospitals of varying sizes and geographic locations, the program provides formalized preceptor training, monthly daylong educational sessions, and mentoring by clinical coaches. Key factors contributing to the success of this program are a dedicated, cohesive planning team of individuals who embrace a common agenda, stakeholder buy-in, appropriate allocation of resources, and clear articulation of measures of success, with associated data collection. Successful elements of the monthly educational sessions are the use of interactive teaching methods, inclusion of content tailored to the unique needs of the nurse residents, and storytelling to facilitate learning from practice. Finally, training to advance the skill development of preceptors, coaches, educators, and facilitators has provided organizations with enduring benefits

    Modelling Plant Cell Growth

Plants are sessile organisms and they must adapt their growth to a changing environment. Understanding plant growth requires to study the interplay of turgor, cellular hydrodynamics, mechanical properties of cell walls and addition of materials to cell walls, as well as the actions of phytohormones. Mathematical modelling is a useful tool for tackling the complexity in plant growth. The scope of this article is to discuss the fundamental aspects of modelling plant cell growth. In order for a plant cell to grow, the cell wall must expand, water must enter the cell and turgor pressure must be able to provide mechanical support. During cell growth, the relative change in the water volume and the relative change in cell wall chamber volume are approximately equal. Mathematical equations for modelling plant cell growth are described to establish how cell volume and turgor can be calculated. Mathematical equations for ion transport are introduced to establish how osmotic pressure can be calculated. Combination of those equations formulates a method for modelling plant cell growth. Modelling of auxin dynamics, which play a key role in controlling cell expansion, is also described. One of the future challenges is to model the interplay between plant growth and auxin dynamics
