International business tourism : a growth rate model

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to understand the factors influencing business tourism on a global scale, in order to assess the competence of the countries in this tourism segment and prescribe them guidelines for action. For the development of data analysis, a growth rate model was estimated and a sample of 136 countries for the years 2005 and 2009 was collected. Results reveal that, for the development of policies to stimulate the growth in the business tourism segment, countries should develop measures that encourage capital investment in tourism, leisure tourism and trade openness.8316-FD77-85EB | Pedro Miguel Fonseca Moreira de CarvalhoN/

Results reveal that, for the development of policies to stimulate the growth in the business tourism segment, countries should develop measures that encourage capital investment in tourism, leisure tourism and trade openness. Economic agents should also focus their investments in equipment that creates value throughout the tourism supply chain, in particular, in transport and equipment for entertainment and culture.8316-FD77-85EB | Pedro Miguel Fonseca Moreira de Carvalhoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Policies to increase business tourism income : a dynamic panel data model

    Get PDF
This article aims to identify the determinants that influence business tourism income and that may be controlled by economic agents and policy makers of destination countries. For the development of the empirical study, a dynamic panel model by the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) was estimated using the Gretl 2016a software, and a sample of 122 countries for the period 2002?2013 (12 years) was used. The study reveals that, for the development of policies to stimulate the growth in the short and long-term of business tourism income, countries should develop measures that encourage capital investment in tourism and foreign direct investment.8316-FD77-85EB | Pedro Miguel Fonseca Moreira de CarvalhoN/

Do neighbouring countries encourage the demand of international business tourism?

    Get PDF
This paper aims at determining the factors that influence the growth of international business tourism and understanding whether the demand growth of business tourism spreads across neighbouring countries. For the development of the empirical research, data has been collected from a sample of 136 countries worldwide, and spatial econometric techniques have been used. Evidence that supports the idea that the main factors related to the increase in incomes of business tourism are the private investment on tourism assets, the leisure tourism and the trade openness in relation to the outside world is presented. This study also reveals that the demand of business tourism in a country is not contagious, that is, the demand varies neither with the demand of its neighbours nor with their exogenous characteristics. The results have important implications for the choice of tourism policy goals at national levels and the corresponding policy instruments.8316-FD77-85EB | Pedro Miguel Fonseca Moreira de CarvalhoN/

El diagnóstico serológico de la leishmaniosis canina en la comarca del Priorat (Tarragona)

    Get PDF
The presence of anti-Leishmania antibodies is studied in 1328 blood samples from 902 dogs from the Priorat region (Catalonia), an important focus of canine leúhmaniosú, by a Dot-ELISA technique. The cut-off (1/800)is established through the data obtained by serology and culture in parallel. The prevalence of seropositives observed was 10,2 %. Only 49,8 % of sera were completely negative. The remaining 40% had anti-Leishmania antibodies at titres below the cut- off, the possible significance of which is discused

Detection of peanut (Arachis hypogaea) allergens in processed foods by immunoassay: Influence of selected target protein and ELISA format applied

    Get PDF
Direct competitive and sandwich ELISA formats developed to determine Ara h1 and Ara h2 proteins were applied in the detection of peanut in model biscuits prepared with a commercial peanut butter as ingredient. The sandwich format for Ara h2 protein could detect the addition of 2.5% peanut butter, whereas the same format for Ara h1 could not detect 5% added peanut. Direct competitive formats for Ara h1 and Ara h2 proteins could detect the addition of 1% and 0.05% peanut butter, respectively. Therefore, competitive format for Ara h2 was selected to be evaluated by four laboratories, obtaining adequate results in term of repeatability and reproducibility. Results obtained indicate that processing decreased the level of extracted proteins and underestimated the amount of Ara h1 and Ara h2 proteins, the effect being more severe for Ara h1. The selection of the target protein and the ELISA format applied greatly influence the detection of peanut in processed foods

Assessing spatial and temporal distributions of marine litter: 11-year dataset of coastal floating marine debris in the Balearic Islands

    Get PDF
The present work constitutes a preliminary assessment of the spatial and temporal distribution of floating marine debris along the Balearic Islands’ coastline during the months of May - October from 2005 to 2015. This long-term dataset indicates marine debris was found in 42.46% of all monitoring surveys, with plastic marine debris being found in 93.41% of the marine debris surveyed. Elevated accumulation zones were present in the southern regions and plastic was consistently the most abundant for both nearshore and offshore coastal areas. This study provides insight into the magnitude of marine debris surrounding the Balearic Islands highlighting the need for action and awareness to address its increasing pressures on marine and coastal ecosystems

Stability of vortex lines in liquid 3He-4He mixtures at zero temperature

    Get PDF
At low temperatures and 3He concentrations below 6.6 %, there is experimental evidence about the existence in liquid helium mixtures, of stable vortices with 3He-rich cores. When the system is either supersaturated or submitted to a tensile strength, vortices lose stability becoming metastable and eventually completely unstable, so that their cores freely expand. Within a density functional approach, we have determined the pressure-3He concentration curve along which this instability appears at zero temperature.Comment: Typeset using Revtex, 9 pages and 5 Postscript figure

Postglacial dispersal of Phlebotomus perniciosus into France

    Get PDF
Phlebotomus perniciosus was identified morphologically in samples from France and northeast Spain, and individuals were then characterized at three polymorphic isoenzyme loci (by isoelectrofocusing) and at the mitochondrial DNA locus (by comparative DNA sequence analysis of a fragment of the Cytochrome b gene). The four polymorphic loci gave conflicting patterns of population relationships, which can be explained by hypothesizing different amounts of gene introgression at each locus when two distinctive lineages met in southern France or northeast Spain after isolation in southern Italy and Spain during the Pleistocene Ice Ages. P. perniciosus is an important vector of leishmania infantum and so these population differentiation studies are relevant for predicting the emergence and spread of leishmaniasis in relation to environmental changes, including climate
