Retrospective Evaluation of Clinical Experience With Intravenous Ascorbic Acid in Patients With Cancer.
BACKGROUND: Intravenous ascorbic acid (IV AA) has been used extensively in cancer patients throughout the United States. Currently, there are limited data on the safety and clinical effects of IV AA. The purpose of this study was to expand the current literature using a retrospective analysis of adverse events and symptomatic changes of IV AA in a large sample of cancer patients.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of all patients receiving IV AA for cancer at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital over a 7-year period. We assessed all reports of adverse events, laboratory findings, and hospital or emergency department admissions. We also reviewed quality-of-life data, including fatigue, nausea, pain, appetite, and mood.
RESULTS: There were 86 patients who received a total of 3034 doses of IV AA ranging from 50 to 150g. In all, 32 patients received only ascorbic acid as part of their cancer management (1197 doses), whereas 54 patients received ascorbic acid in conjunction with chemotherapy (1837 doses). The most common adverse events related to ascorbic acid were temporary nausea and discomfort at the injection site. All events reported in the ascorbic acid alone group were associated with less than 3% of the total number of infusions. Patients, overall, reported improvements in fatigue, pain, and mood while receiving ascorbic acid.
CONCLUSIONS: The results of this retrospective analysis support the growing evidence that IV AA is generally safe and well tolerated in patients with cancer, and may be useful in symptom management and improving quality of life
Levi umbilical surfaces in complex space
We define a complex connection on a real hypersurface of \C^{n+1} which is
naturally inherited from the ambient space. Using a system of Codazzi-type
equations, we classify connected real hypersurfaces in \C^{n+1}, ,
which are Levi umbilical and have non zero constant Levi curvature. It turns
out that such surfaces are contained either in a sphere or in the boundary of a
complex tube domain with spherical section.Comment: 18 page
Quasi-equilibrium states in thermotropic liquid crystals studied by multiple quantum NMR
We study the nature of the quasiinvariants in nematic 5CB and measure their
relaxation times by encoding the multiple quantum coherences of the states
following the JB pulse pair on two orthogonal bases, Z and X. The experiments
were also performed in powder adamantane at 301 K which is used as a reference
compound having only one dipolar quasiinvariant. We show that the evolution of
the quantum states during the build up of the quasi-equilibrium state in 5CB
prepared under the S condition is similar to the case of adamantane and that
their quasi-equilibrium density operators have the same tensor structure. In
contrast, the second constant of motion, whose explicit operator form is not
known, involves a richer composition of multiple quantum coherences on the X
basis of even order, in consistency with the truncation inherent in its
definition. We exploited the exclusive presence coherences 4, 6, 8, besides 0
and 2 under the W condition to measure the spin-lattice relaxation time T_{W}
accurately, so avoiding experimental difficulties that usually impair dipolar
order relaxation measurement such as Zeeman contamination at high fields, and
also superposition of the different quasiinvariants. This procedure opens the
possibility of measuring the spin-lattice relaxation of a quasiinvariant
independent of the Zeeman and S reservoirs, so incorporating a new relaxation
parameter useful for studying the complex molecular dynamics in mesophases. In
fact, we report the first measurement of T_{W} in a liquid crystal at high
magnetic fields. The comparison of the obtained value with the one
corresponding to a lower field (16 MHz) points out that the relaxation of the
W-order strongly depends on the intensity of the external magnetic field,
similarly to the case of the S reservoir, indicating that the relaxation of the

Archetyps of wisdom: intercultural communication competences training in multicultural students groups
This paper presents a new approach to the problem of system decoupling in a power-system state estimation problem. The complexity of power systems is growing, thus challenging the way measurements for state estimation are traditionally managed. Following a previous experience in defining a decentralized solution for state estimation, the authors here propose a decentralized dynamic state estimation method for a large-scale power system in combination with a procedure to automatically identify how and which state information to exchange for reconstructing the states starting from partial knowledge. In particular, the problem of selecting the variables that each observer has to estimate is partially solved within the framework of a stochastic approach, i.e., the so-called collocation method. An optimization algorithm based on dynamic programming is also developed to determine the optimal set of strongly coupled variables necessary for a sufficiently accurate estimation. First prototype of a silicon tracker using an artificial retina for fast track finding
We report on the R\&D for a first prototype of a silicon tracker based on an
alternative approach for fast track finding. The working principle is inspired
from neurobiology, in particular by the processing of visual images by the
brain as it happens in nature. It is based on extensive parallelisation of data
distribution and pattern recognition. In this work we present the design of a
practical device that consists of a telescope based on single-sided silicon
detectors; we describe the data acquisition system and the implementation of
the track finding algorithms using available digital logic of commercial FPGA
devices. Tracking performance and trigger capabilities of the device are

Low strength T-cross section RC beams shear-strengthened by NSM technique
In 2003 a research program started with the aim of developing design guidelines for the shear strengthening of T cross section reinforced concrete (RC) beams using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates applied according to the Near Surface Mounted (NSM) technique. The previous series of tested beams were mainly conceived to appraise the influence of parameters such as percentage and orientation of laminates. The occurrence of a failure mode consisting in the separation of the strengthened cover of the web lateral faces, prompted the authors to further in-vestigate the influence of the concrete mechanical properties. The series described in the present work comprehends ten beams characterized by low strength concrete. Ghigliottin-AI @ EVALITA2020: Evaluating artificial players for the language game “La Ghigliottina”
Evaluating Artificial Players for the Language Game “La Ghigliottina” (Ghigliottin-AI) task is one of the tasks organized in the context of the 2020 EVALITA edition, a periodic evaluation campaign of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and speech tools for the Italian language. Ghigliottin-AI participants are asked to build an artificial player able to solve “La Ghigliottina”, namely the final game of an Italian TV show called “L'Eredità”. The game involves a single player who is given a set of five words unrelated to each other, but related with a sixth word that represents the solution to the game. Fourteen teams registered to Ghigliottin-AI. Nevertheless, only two teams submitted their run. In order to evaluate the submitted systems, we rely on an API base methodology, via a Remote Evaluation Server (RES). In this report we describe the Ghigliottin-AI task, the data, the evaluation and we discuss results
Statistical description of inhomogeneous samples by scanning microwave microscopy
A quantitative analysis of the dielectric properties of a multiphase sample using a scanning microwave microscope (SMM) is proposed. The method is demonstrated using inhomogeneous samples composed of a resin containing micrometric inclusions of a known ceramic material. The SMM suitable for this task employs relatively large tips (tens of micrometers in diameter). Additionally, in order to make the instrument more suitable for high-throughput analysis, an original design for rapid tip changes is implemented. Single-point measurements of dielectric constant at random locations on the sample were performed, leading to histograms of dielectric constant values. These are related to the dielectric constants of the two phases using Maxwell–Garnett effective medium theory, taking into account the volume-of-interaction in the sample beneath the tip
