L'ichnofaune reptilienne hettangienne du Veillon (Vendée, France)

The Veillon ichnofauna, early Liassic in age, includes various Reptile taxa: quadruped Pseudosuchian, Coelurosaurians, Theropods, primitive Iguanodon – like Ornithopods and some unspecified forms. This ichnofauna is very comparable to the early Liassic footprint assemblage of the Connecticut

Le paléoestuaire hettangien du Veillon (Vendée)

Clastic deposits related to alluvial and estuarine environments sedimented during the early Liassic in the Veillon area (south of Talmont-Saint-Hilaire, Vendée, France). A reptile fauna including various taxa, just known by innumerable footprints, lived in that environment, in rather hot and dry climatic conditions

In the Talmondais (Vendée) the Hettangian sedimentation locally begins with fluviatil clastic deposits prior to the deposition of shallow marine carbonates. These clastics, including the footprint-bearing beds of Le Veillon (south of Talmont- Saint-Hilaire) are subject to important and frequent variations in thickness. Drilling and geophysic data indicate a tectonic control of these variations. A fault-block pattern is proposed. At a small scale, it gives an illustration of the extensional tectonic processes related to the evolution of the Biscay rift during the early Liassic

In the inter/supratidal algal mats, the early diagenesis products a progressive induration. It is enough to preserve all the deformations affecting the mats, including footprints of vertebrates, tracks and burrows of small invertebrates, and physical actions (desiccation cracks)

The well-known Iberian site of La Alcudia (the antique Illici) settled in the Elche tectonic depression (Lower Vinalopo and Lower Segura area) located to the eastern end of the Betic Cordillera. Different aspects of the environment are discussed: Iberian landscape, reconstruction of the coastline and mineral resources of the hinterland. The main part of the paper is dedicated to the study of the antique quarries which provided the rocks used for the Iberian building and statuary. The case of the “Dama de Elche”, the most famous work of the Iberian art, is detailed and the “quarries of the Dame” are precisely located. The diffusion of the Illicitan works out of La Alcudia is just illustrated by some examples but requires a more detailed inventory

Uppermost-Tortonian to present depocentre migration related with segmentation of the Palomares Fault Zone (PFZ), SE Betics, Spain

The Palomares Fault Zone (PFZ) is one of the main strike-slip brittle shear zones found in the Betics. It is segmented in several faults that have been active between the Upper Tortonian and present day. Data from drill cores in the The Palomares Fault Zone (PFZ) is one of the main strike-slip brittle shear zones found in the Betics. It is segmented in several faults that have been active between the Upper Tortonian and present day. Data from drill cores in the Palomares area have permitted us to define the geometry and location of sedimentary depocentres related with the PFZ. These data show an eastward displacement between the Upper Tortonian to Messinian and the Pliocene–Quaternary sedimentary depocentres, towards the presently active Arteal fault, which bounds the western mountain front of Sierra Almagrera, showing that deformation along this fault zone has migrated towards the east, from the Palomares segment, with its main activity during the Upper Tortonian and Messinian, towards the Arteal fault, active during the Pliocene and Quaternary

In March 2005, in the course of an examination of the quarry from which the stone used to sculpt the Lady of Elche was extracted, the bust of a young warrior in rough sculpture was discovered among the detritus at the bottom of the quarry. Fifty centimetres high, the bust displays the characteristic features of plastic works of art wrought in the south-eastern region of the Iberian Peninsula in the 5th-4th centuries BC: warrior iconography, organisation of volumes, rectangular face and maintenance of archaic frontality with asymmetry. This is the earliest known piece of Iberian rough sculpture.
