Evidence from Portuguese SME

This investigation access if an inventory management motivation could explain the use trade credit, as well if a trade credit contagion effect occurs during periods of financial crisis. Therefore, a panel dataset of Portuguese manufacturing SME firms, over the period of 2000-2009, and employing a panel data methodology, the results confirm the existence of an incentive for firms to offer and receive trade credit in order to promote sales in the first instance, and in a second instance, to reduce inventory levels and the associated costs. Moreover, credit constraints during a financial crisis cause firms holding high-levels of accounts receivable to postpone payments to suppliers. Specifically, high-risk firms receive more suppliers’ credit due to suppliers concern about their customer's survival.Esta investigação procura avaliar se a motivação para a gestão de inventários explica o uso do crédito comercial, bem como se algum efeito de contágio ocorre no crédito comercial durante períodos de crise financeira. Desta forma, através de um painel de dados referente a empresas industriais Portuguesas de pequena e média dimensão que abrangem o período de 2000 a 2009, e utilizando a metodologia de dados em painel, os resultados confirmam a existência de um incentive para as empresas procurarem e concederem crédito comercial. Este incentivo baseia em primeiro lugar na promoção das vendas, e sem segundo lugar, na redução dos inventários e dos custos que lhe estão associados. Além disso, as restrições de crédito frequentes em períodos de crise financeira leva a que empresas com elevadas contas a receber adiem os pagamentos aos fornecedores. Particularmente, empresas com risco elevado recebem mais crédito dos seus fornecedores uma vez que estes estão mais sensibilizados para a sobrevivência dos clientes

"And [they] built a crooked h[arbour]" - the Schrems ruling and what it means for the future of data transfers between the EU and US

ABSTRACT: Safe Harbour (Henceforth, SH) has been the main enabler of EU-US personal data transfers since Decision 2000/520/EC came into force. Initially, Safe Harbour was seen as an innovative solution to a difficult problem. However, the problems the agreement was created to solve were never remedied. Thus, it did not come as a surprise that the Court of Justice of the European Union (hereinafter, CJEU), in Case C-362/14 (the Schrems ruling), deemed the agreement invalid. In the story “And he built a crooked house”, the infamous ‘crooked house’, designed by Robert A. Heinlein’s character Quintus Teal, mirrors SH’s flawed design. It also exemplifies the fact that great innovations can fail if not thought through carefully. Although the Schrems ruling’s scope does not go beyond Decision 2000/520/EC, it will force European Data Protection Agencies to look deeper into alternative data transfer mechanisms and possibly, consider transfers to jurisdictions other than the US. Furthermore, this decision highlights the fact that if any progress on this front is going to be made going forward regarding personal data transfers, any solution(s) would have to be made at a global level. Um teatro com sentido : a voz crítica de Manuela Porto

Tese de mestrado em Estudos de Teatro apresentada à Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, 2008Manuela Porto (1908-1950), para além de declamadora, escritora, jornalista e activista feminista e antifascista, foi também actriz. Porém, abandonou os palcos por se desiludir com a situação do teatro em Portugal nos anos quarenta. O presente trabalho é um estudo em torno da figura ainda pouco estudada de Manuela Porto e da sua relação com o teatro, através da análise de uma parte da sua obra literária, da sua crítica teatral e do grupo de teatro amador que dirigiu o Corpo Cénico do Grupo Dramático Lisbonense.Manuela Porto (1908-1905), diseuse de poèmes, écrivain, journaliste, activiste féministe et antifasciste, fut aussi une comédienne. Mais elle abandonna la scène car la situation du théâtre au Portugal dans les années 40 la déçut. Cette dissertation a pour objet l'étude de ce personnage jusqu'à présent peu étudié et son rapport avec le théâtre, à travers l'analyse d'une partie de son uvre littéraire, de ses critiques théâtrales et de la troupe de théâtre amateur qu'elle dirigea «Corpo Cénico do Grupo Dramático Lisbonense»
