    Temperature dependent orbital degree of freedom in a bilayer manganite by magnetic Compton scattering

    We have measured temperature-dependent magnetic Compton profiles (MCPs) from a single crystal of La1.2_{1.2}Sr1.8_{1.8}Mn2_2O7_7. The MCPs, which involved the scattering of circularly polarized x-rays, are in general related to the momentum density of all the unpaired spins in the system. Nevertheless, we show that when the x-ray scattering vector lies along the [110] direction, the number of magnetic electrons of a specific symmetry, i.e. dd-electrons of x2−y2x^2-y^2 symmetry, yield a distinct signature in the MCP, allowing us to monitor substantial changes in the occupancy of the dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2} states over the investigated temperature range of 5-200K. This study indicates that magnetic Compton scattering can provide a powerful window on the properties of specific magnetic electrons in complex materials.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys.     Model-based robocentric planning and navigation for dynamic environments

    This work addresses a new technique of motion planning and navigation for differential-drive robots in dynamic environments. Static and dynamic objects are represented directly on the control space of the robot, where decisions on the best motion are made. A new model representing the dynamism and the prediction of the future behavior of the environment is defined, the dynamic object velocity space (DOVS). A formal definition of this model is provided, establishing the properties for its characterization. An analysis of its complexity, compared with other methods, is performed. The model contains information about the future behavior of obstacles, mapped on the robot control space. It allows planning of near-time-optimal safe motions within the visibility space horizon, not only for the current sampling period. Navigation strategies are developed based on the identification of situations in the model. The planned strategy is applied and updated for each sampling time, adapting to changes occurring in the scenario. The technique is evaluated in randomly generated simulated scenarios, based on metrics defined using safety and time-to-goal criteria. An evaluation in real-world experiments is also presented

    Accurate Microwave Control and Real-Time Diagnostics of Neutral Atom Qubits

    We demonstrate accurate single-qubit control in an ensemble of atomic qubits trapped in an optical lattice. The qubits are driven with microwave radiation, and their dynamics tracked by optical probe polarimetry. Real-time diagnostics is crucial to minimize systematic errors and optimize the performance of single-qubit gates, leading to fidelities of 0.99 for single-qubit pi rotations. We show that increased robustness to large, deliberately introduced errors can be achieved through the use of composite rotations. However, during normal operation the combination of very small intrinsic errors and additional decoherence during the longer pulse sequences precludes any significant performance gain in our current experiment.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    A comparative analysis on serious adverse events reported for COVID-19 vaccines in adolescents and young adults

    This study aims to assess the safety profile of COVID-19 vaccines (mRNA and viral vector vaccines) in teenagers and young adults, as compared to Influenza and HPV vaccines, and to early data from Monkeypox vaccination in United States. Methods: We downloaded data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) and collected the following Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) reported for COVID-19, Influenza, HPV and Monkeypox vaccines: deaths, life-threatening illnesses, disabilities, hospitalizations. We restricted our analysis to the age groups 12–17 and 18–49, and to the periods December 2020 to July 2022 for COVID-19 vaccines, 2010–2019 for Influenza vaccines, 2006–2019 for HPV vaccines, June 1, 2022 to November 15, 2022 for Monkeypox vaccine. Rates were calculated in each age and sex group, based on an estimation of the number of administered doses. Results: Among adolescents the total number of reported SAEs per million doses for, respectively, COVID-19, Influenza and HPV vaccines were 60.73, 2.96, 14.62. Among young adults the reported SAEs rates for, respectively, COVID-19, Influenza, Monkeypox vaccines were 101.91, 5.35, 11.14. Overall, the rates of reported SAEs were significantly higher for COVID-19, resulting in a rate 19.60-fold higher than Influenza vaccines (95% C.I. 18.80–20.44), 4.15-fold higher than HPV vaccines (95% C.I. 3.91–4.41) and 7.89-fold higher than Monkeypox vaccine (95% C.I. 3.95–15.78). Similar trends were observed in teenagers and young adults with higher Relative Risks for male adolescents. Conclusion: The study identified a risk of SAEs following COVID-19 vaccination which was markedly higher compared to Influenza vaccination and substantially higher compared to HPV vaccination, both for teenagers and young adults, with an increased risk for the male adolescents group. Initial, early data for Monkeypox vaccination point to significantly lower rates of reported SAEs compared to those for COVID-19 vaccines. In conclusion these results stress the need of further studies to explore the bases for the above differences and the importance of accurate harm-benefit analyses, especially for adolescent males, to inform the COVID-19 vaccination campaign

    In our days, CP (Charge Parity) violation in the Standar Model of fundamental interactions still remains as an open problem. It is well known that explicit CP violation may be included by impossing complex Yukawa couplings in the Yukawa sector or complex Higgs couplings in exttended Higgs sectors with more than one Higgs field. It is desirable to have a fundamental CP violation theory, in that sence, we analyse the diferent secenarios for Spontaneous CP violation in an exteded Higgs model with three Higgs fields and a discrete flavour permutational symmetry S3. Spontaneous CP violation effects contribute to the Higgs mass matrix, as well as, up and down quark mass matrices. This complex quark mass matrices allow us to study the conditions for a non-vanishing Jarlskog invariant J which provides a necessary and sufficient contribution for a spontaneous CPV coming from SM ⊗ S

    We study the interplays between paracontact geometry and the theory of bi-Legendrian manifolds. We interpret the bi-Legendrian connection of a bi-Legendrian manifold M as the paracontact connection of a canonical paracontact structure induced on M and then we discuss many consequences of this result both for bi-Legendrian and for paracontact manifolds.     NPP VIIRS Early On-Orbit Geometric Performance

    The NASA/NOAA Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument on-board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite was launched in October, 2011. The instrument geometric performance includes sensor spatial response, band-to-band co-registration (BBR), and geolocation accuracy and precision. The geometric performance is an important aspect of sensor data record (SDR) calibration and validation. In this paper we will discuss geometric performance parameter characterization using the first seven-month of VIIRS' earth and lunar data, and compare with the at-launch performance using ground testing data and analysis of numerical modeling results as the first step in on-orbit geometric calibration and validation
