Differences in the Form of Presentation between Papillary Microcarcinomas and Papillary Carcinomas of Larger Size
Papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs) with a diameter ≤1 cm are referred to as papillary microcarcinomas (PTMCs). The prognostic factors for PTMCs have not been defined. Different clinical and histopathologic variables were studied in 152 PTCs, including 74 PTMCs and 78 PTCs of larger size. We found that PTMCs are associated with less multifocality (P = .046) and bilaterality (P = .003), fewer lymphadenectomies (P < .001), and a higher rate of incidental tumours (P < .001). Moreover, patients with a low aggressive profile were significantly older than the remaining patients (54 ± 13.7 years versus 45.8 ± 13.1 years; P = .001). In conclusion PTMCs show significant differences compared to PTCs of larger size in the form of presentation. Furthermore, it is possible that the classic risk factors, which are well validated in PTCs, such as age, must be cautiously interpreted in the current increasing subgroup of PTMCs
To determine the species composition of the zooplancton in the reservoir Betania (altitude; 560 m.a.s.l.; area: 7.4 km2; vol: 1971 x 106 m3; mean depht 28 m), at seven sites and several depths, bimonthly net samples (100 and 200 microns mesh size) were taken during 1991. Alltogether 24 species were found: Thermocyclops decipiens (Crustacea, Copepoda), Moina sp., Ceriodaphnia cornuta y Allona sp. (Crustacea, Cladocera); 19 species of rotífers, of which 7 belong to the genus Brachionus, as well as larvas of the dipter Chaoborus sp. For the first time Brachionus havanaensis, B. falcatus falcatus, b. quadridentatus, y Platyias cuadricornis f. brevispinus were found in Colombia. The species composition was compared with the composition of other lakes and comparison shows that the Betania reservoir has a typical species composition for warms tropical lakes
Evaluation of sensor configurations for robotic surgical instruments
Designing surgical instruments for robotic-assisted minimally-invasive surgery (RAMIS) is challenging due to constraints on the number and type of sensors imposed by considerations such as space or the need for sterilization. A new method for evaluating the usability of virtual teleoperated surgical instruments based on virtual sensors is presented. This method uses virtual prototyping of the surgical instrument with a dual physical interaction, which allows testing of different sensor configurations in a real environment. Moreover, the proposed approach has been applied to the evaluation of prototypes of a two-finger grasper for lump detection by remote pinching. In this example, the usability of a set of five different sensor configurations, with a different number of force sensors, is evaluated in terms of quantitative and qualitative measures in clinical experiments with 23 volunteers. As a result, the smallest number of force sensors needed in the surgical instrument that ensures the usability of the device can be determined. The details of the experimental setup are also included

Usability Test of Personality Type within a Roommate Matching Website: A Case Study
We designed and built a roommate matching website, exclusively for students, which allow students to have a central point in which they can meet credible roommate candidates, search for verified housing, and easily reach out to these individuals to further their relationship, and eventually share living space. Our website aims to allow a user to search for compatible roommates not just by living habits, but by tying in the personality of candidates in reference to their own personality type. This type of personality matching in conjunction with a standard behavioral survey is the basis of the algorithm used for roommate matching. In addition to designing and building this website, we also conducted a research around two questions. First, does the idea of personality type in conjunction with living habits have the capacity to form a stronger foundation on which roommates can be selected? Second, is there a means in which we can collect this information from a user and apply it, while avoiding the typical result of survey fatigue that is inherent in existing personality quizzes? We found that majority of our respondents felt that knowing the personality compatibility would influence their decision of sharing a living space with someone. Our respondents also preferred a more visual and interactive quiz to determine personality type in comparison to questionnaires
Spatial epidemiology and adaptive targeted sampling to manage the Chagas disease vector Triatoma dimidiata
Widespread application of insecticide remains the primary form of control for
Chagas disease in Central America, despite only temporarily reducing domestic
levels of the endemic vector Triatoma dimidiata and having little long-term
impact. Recently, an approach emphasizing community feedback and housing
improvements has been shown to yield lasting results. However, the additional
resources and personnel required by such an intervention likely hinders its
widespread adoption. One solution to this problem would be to target only a
subset of houses in a community while still eliminating enough infestations to
interrupt disease transfer. Here we develop a sequential sampling framework
that adapts to information specific to a community as more houses are visited,
thereby allowing us to efficiently find homes with domiciliary vectors while
minimizing sampling bias. The method fits Bayesian geostatistical models to
make spatially informed predictions, while gradually transitioning from
prioritizing houses based on prediction uncertainty to targeting houses with a
high risk of infestation. A key feature of the method is the use of a single
exploration parameter, , to control the rate of transition between
these two design targets. In a simulation study using empirical data from five
villages in southeastern Guatemala, we test our method using a range of values
for , and find it can consistently select fewer homes than random
sampling, while still bringing the village infestation rate below a given
threshold. We further find that when additional socioeconomic information is
available, much larger savings are possible, but that meeting the target
infestation rate is less consistent, particularly among the less exploratory
strategies. Our results suggest new options for implementing long-term T.

Kinetics of Transesterification of Safflower Oil to Obtain Biodiesel Using Heterogeneous Catalysis
The kinetics of the transesterification of safflower oil and methanol catalyzed by K2O/NaX was studied and modeled. The influence of the oil-methanol initial molar ratio and amount of catalyst were investigated to achieve a maximum triglycerides conversion (99%) and a final methyl esters content of 94% ± 1. A kineticmodel based on an Eley– Rideal mechanism was found to best fit the experimental data when assuming methanol adsorption as determining step. Other models derived from Langmuir – Hinshelwood – Hougen –Watson (LHHW) mechanisms were rejected based on statistical analysis, mechanistic considerations and physicochemical interpretation of the estimated parameters
