This article examines the impact of the side effects of breast cancer treatment on women's self-image. Qualitative and descriptive research was used, complemented with field research with three women with breast cancer as a sample. After analyzing the data, it was possible to verify that there are impacts on women's self-image, especially when the side effects of the treatments begin to be felt

Multidisciplinary design and positive psychology are assimilated into theories in the experiences of subjective well-being. The article questions whether it is possible for a conceptual model based on positive experiences to become a decisive factor in choosing where a user can stay? Knowledge correlates in the evidence, justified in this article, in fruitful solutions in providing positive experiences. The objective of the proposal was the crossing of theories and the application of field research that resulted in a conceptual model about positive experiences, reproduced for a hostel. It is suggested to apply the theories addressed by the mentioned authors, as a basis for the structure of the questionnaire, for an experience of well-being for the user, enabling satisfaction, pleasure and meanings. Responding to the objective of this article, it is evident from the data collected that it is possible to offer positive experiences through a hostel and be the determining factor of choice for a user. It becomes evident in the multidisciplinary of the areas, relating them in what they propose experiences in subjectivity about well-beingEl diseño multidisciplinar y la psicología positiva se asimilan a teorías en las experiencias de bienestar subjetivo. Plasma lipid profiles discriminate bacterial from viral infection in febrile children

Fever is the most common reason that children present to Emergency Departments. Clinical signs and symptoms suggestive of bacterial infection are often non-specific, and there is no definitive test for the accurate diagnosis of infection. The 'omics' approaches to identifying biomarkers from the host-response to bacterial infection are promising. In this study, lipidomic analysis was carried out with plasma samples obtained from febrile children with confirmed bacterial infection (n = 20) and confirmed viral infection (n = 20). We show for the first time that bacterial and viral infection produces distinct profile in the host lipidome. Some species of glycerophosphoinositol, sphingomyelin, lysophosphatidylcholine and cholesterol sulfate were higher in the confirmed virus infected group, while some species of fatty acids, glycerophosphocholine, glycerophosphoserine, lactosylceramide and bilirubin were lower in the confirmed virus infected group when compared with confirmed bacterial infected group. A combination of three lipids achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of 0.911 (95% CI 0.81 to 0.98). This pilot study demonstrates the potential of metabolic biomarkers to assist clinicians in distinguishing bacterial from viral infection in febrile children, to facilitate effective clinical management and to the limit inappropriate use of antibiotics

The giant condylomata acuminata of Buschke-Lowenstein is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the human papillomavirus, clinically characterized by genital warts, with high potential to develop into squamous cell carcinoma. This article seeks to report the case of a male patient, HIV-negative, who had bleeding, purulent discharge and injury with vegetative aspect in the perianal region. Biopsy of the lesion showed condyloma of Buschke-Lowenstein, and, after six months, surgery with wide excision of the lesion and rectum amputation was performed. The anatomopathological examination of the surgical specimen showed squamous cells carcinoma

Brazilian Flora 2020: Leveraging the power of a collaborative scientific network

    No full text
International audienceThe shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world's known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis, concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world's most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “scientific reductionism”, with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora
