Educating immigrant children in the United States: A mixed methods analysis of achievement of Hispanic students in Pennsylvania
The education of immigrant students in the U.S., especially those of Hispanic origin, poses an important challenge to education policy because: i) there is a considerable achievement gap between Hispanic students and White students; ii) Hispanic students are over-represented within the English language learner population; and iii) Hispanic students remain more likely than other immigrant students to come from disadvantaged families. This dissertation identifies the necessary determinants of achievement for Hispanic students while systematically illustrating a number of public policy challenges that constraint educators in Pennsylvania, a state experiencing a recent and a rapid surge of Hispanic immigrants. It specifically asks: What are the effects of student background characteristics and school attributes on individual performance of Hispanic students? What are the main challenges that schools encounter when serving this population? And, what policy recommendations could contribute to enhance the achievement of Hispanic students? To answer these questions satisfactorily, it draws on literatures and methods from three scholarships: Education, Applied Linguistics, and Sociology of Immigration. It utilizes case studies and applies Hierarchical Linear Modeling to a state representative sample of students who took the Pennsylvania System of School Achievement test during 2009, 2010, and 2011.
Findings suggest that student background characteristics significantly predict achievement among Hispanic students and their effect is larger than those of school attributes. The major challenges that schools face in relation to teaching Hispanic students include the English language barrier, a poor academic background knowledge, and low parental involvement. Three strategies showed to be highly effective to address these challenges: constant monitoring of student’s achievement; use of achievement data to inform instructional decisions and tailor interventions to individual students’ needs; and the existence of ESL certified teachers and bilingual school staff. Based on these findings, policy recommendations are offered at the school and district level
Olfactory Vision: Recollection of Visual Information Through Smell in Graphic Design
Olfactory Vision is a social study conducted to understand the influence of a scent within graphic design processes, enhancing the recollection of details. Twenty-four random adults were tested. The experiment was divided into three groups, A, B, and C, presenting two sets of cards; the first had symbols, and the second one had typefaces. A summary of the investigation was provided; however, the rose oil fragrance was not revealed, avoiding conditioning the subjects. The participants had an in-person and follow-up questionnaire one week after, testing their short and long-term memory. The results generally showed no significant difference between genders. In general, the scented symbols had a total recollection of 67%, while the typefaces only had a 28%. This study seeks to provide important data that may influence the field of Graphic Design by integrating other senses beyond traditional visual imagery
Identification and Characterization of the Lipid Transport System in the Tarantula Grammostola rosea
Lipids due to its hydrophobic nature are transported in the hemolymph mainly by lipoproteic fractions. In the present work we studied the lipoproteic fractions present in the hemolymph of the spider Grammostola rosea. Through ultracentrifugation two lipoproteic fractions are isolated, one of high density named Gr-HDL (δ = 1.13 - 1.15 g/ml) and the other of very high density called Gr-VHDL (δ = 1.24 - 1.27 g/ml) Gr-VHDL in hemolymph is majority in relation to Gr-HDL. In this sense Gr-VHDL fraction has 98.6% of hemolymphatic proteins, and 89.3% of lipids presents in the hemolymph. Both lipoproteic fractions possess phospholipids such as majority lipids (phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine) and 18:1, 16:0, 18:2 and 18:0 as the major fatty acids. In order to confirm the role played by lipoproteic fractions in vitro assays with different 14C-lipid were performed. It was observed that Gr-VHDL takes up mainly free fatty acids and triacylglycerols unlike that observed for Gr-HDL in relation to phosphatidylcholine. Through electrophoresis it was observed that Gr-VHDL has three proteins: a predominant band of 68 kDa and two others of 99 and 121 kDa. Gr-HDL displayed a predominant band of 93 kDa, and other minority of 249 kDa. In conclusion, this study reports lipid characterization of the lipoproteic fractions present in the hemolymph of the tarantula, G. rosea. The role of each lipoproteic fraction in relation to lipid up- take is sustained by in vitro assays. Similarities and differences are found when it is compared to lipoproteins of only the three species of spiders studied.Fil: Laino, Aldana. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Single-Cell Tracking of A549 Lung Cancer Cells Exposed to a Marine Toxin Reveals Correlations in Pedigree Tree Profiles
Long-term video-based tracking of single A549 lung cancer cells exposed to three different concentrations of the marine toxin yessotoxin (YTX) reveals significant variation in cytotoxicity, and it confirms the potential genotoxic effects of this toxin. Tracking of single cells subject to various toxic exposure, constitutes a conceptually simple approach to elucidate lineage correlations and sub-populations which are masked in cell bulk analyses. The toxic exposure can here be considered as probing a cell population for properties and change which may include long-term adaptation to treatments. Ranking of pedigree trees according to a measure of “size,” provides definition of sub-populations. Following single cells through generations indicates that signaling cascades and experience of mother cells can pass to their descendants. Epigenetic factors and signaling downstream lineages may enhance differences between cells and partly explain observed heterogeneity in a population. Signaling downstream lineages can potentially link a variety of observations of cells making resulting data more suitable for computerized treatment. YTX exposure of A549 cells tends to cause two main visually distinguishable classes of cell death modalities (“apoptotic-like” and “necrotic-like”) with approximately equal frequency. This special property of YTX enables estimation of correlation between cell death modalities for sister cells indicating impact downstream lineages. Hence, cellular responses and adaptation to treatments might be better described in terms of effects on pedigree trees rather than considering cells as independent entities.publishedVersio
Customer experience in the hotel industry: a systematic literature review and research agenda
Purpose: Academic research on customer experience (CX) in the hospitality industry has recently experienced vast growth as managers have increasingly focused on delivering distinctive experiences to their guests. Despite the relevance of this topic, studies conducted in this area within the hotel context are scarce and dispersed. This paper aims to classify the main academic studies and to present a definition of hotel CX, a conceptual model, emerging trends and future research gaps. Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature review (SLR) was selected as the research methodology. Adapted from preferred reporting items of SLR and meta-analysis statements, this study entailed an in-depth review of 46 articles published in English between 2006 and 2021. The articles were compiled using keyword searches in Scopus and Web of Science. Findings: This study facilitates an understanding of the hotel CX. The conceptual framework derived from the SLR includes the entire set of antecedents, consequences, mediators and moderators of this concept. The results also illustrate the topic’s academic evolution and expose major guidelines that can help determine areas for future research. Originality/value: This study adds value to the hospitality research literature via SLR. The framework of CX in the hotel industry synthesizes the existing knowledge on this topic and identifies research gaps. The proposed framework allows for the improvement of future hotel CX studies
The influential role of hotel-generated content on social media
Purpose: This study aims to determine how hotel-generated content (HGC) on official social media accounts influences booking intention by considering the mediating role of three key constructs: user evaluations of the perceived quality of information, engagement and brand attitude. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 834 valid online questionnaires were collected to empirically test the measurement and structural model using a partial least square path modeling approach. Findings: Although HGC does not have a direct effect on booking intention, this construct has a positive influence on both the perceived quality of information and engagement, which in turn positively influence booking intention. In addition, greater engagement generates a positive attitude, which increases booking intention. Originality/value: This study represents a new step in understanding the influence of HGC on tourist behavior by extending research on guests’ decision-making processes and empirically demonstrating the chain of related influences that begins with HGC to promote booking intention
