El proceso de creación de este proyecto ha contado con un trabajo tanto de técnicas tradicionales como digitales además de fotografía y texto. Todo ello ha sido apoyado con software determinados para la elaboración digital y para la creación plástica varias técnicas ilustrativas tradicionales. Por otro lado, se ha llevado a cabo como parte del resultado final la maquetación y el diseño del libro ilustrado. El siguiente dossier recoge todos los apartados del trabajo

    Diversidad diferencial de esporas de Glomeromycota en la rizosfera de bromeliáceas nativas del Parque Nacional Sierra de las Quijadas (San Luis, Argentina)

    Los hongos micorrícicos arbusculares (HMA) están ampliamente distribuidos en distintos ambientes y forman con la mayoría de las plantas asociaciones simbióticas denominadas micorrizas arbusculares. Bromeliaceae es una familia americana que habita desde los trópicos hasta zonas templadas y áridas. En el Parque Nacional Sierra de las Quijadas (San Luis, Argentina) las especies terrestres de Bromeliaceae están colonizadas por HMA, presentando distintos grados de asociación. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la diversidad (riqueza y densidad) de esporas de HMA en el suelo rizosférico de tres especies nativas de Bromeliaceae del Parque Nacional Sierra de las Quijadas. Riqueza y densidad de esporas difirieron significativamente entre las especies de Bromeliaceae estudiadas, siendo siempre marcadamente menores los valores obtenidos en Bromelia urbaniana, mientras que Deuterocohnia longipetala y Dyckia floribunda presentaron los mayores valores y sólo difirieron entre sí en la riqueza de HMA. Esta diversidad diferencial de esporas de HMA observada, podría tener relación con la especie hospedante y a su vez, con los distintos grados de colonización radical de cada especie. La escasa riqueza y densidad de esporas de HMA en B. urbaniana podría deberse tanto a un efecto alelopático de esta planta como a su particular morfología radical.Fil: Rivero Mega, Maria Soledad.     Patients with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome show T helper type 1 (Th1) and Th17 self-reactive immune responses specific to prostate and seminal antigens and diminished semen quality

    Objectives: To assess the presence of self-reactive immune responses to seminal and prostate antigens (PAg), biomarkers of inflammation of the male genital tract, and semen quality parameters in patients with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). Patients, Subjects and Methods: Peripheral blood and semen samples were collected from patients with CP/CPPS and age-matched healthy control volunteers. We analysed the lymphoproliferative responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) to different seminal plasma (SP)-derived and purified PAg, serum autoantibodies specific to PAg, leucocyte subpopulations, and inflammatory cytokines in semen, sperm apoptosis/necrosis, and semen quality parameters. Results: Significantly greater PBMC proliferative responses specific to PAg, with elevated secretion of interferon (IFN)γ and interleukin (IL)-17, were detected in the patients with CP/CPPS vs the controls. Moreover, the patients with CP/CPPS had significantly greater serum immunoglobulin G immune reactivity to SP proteins, such as prostate-specific antigen and prostatic acid phosphatase, than the controls. Inflammation of the male genital tract was exemplified by high levels of IFNγ, IL-17, IL-1β and IL-8, as well as higher counts of leukocytes, mainly CD4 T lymphocytes and macrophages, in the semen. In addition, this local inflammation was associated with an overall diminished semen quality, i.e., reduced sperm concentration, motility and viability; and higher levels of sperm apoptosis/necrosis in patients with CP/CPPS vs controls. Conclusion: Patients with CP/CPPS show T helper type 1 (Th1) and Th17 immune responses specific to PAg associated with chronic inflammation of the male genital tract and reduced semen quality. These immune responses may underlie the induction and development of chronic pelvic pain and inflammation of the male genital tract, which in turn could alter normal prostate functioning and impair semen quality.Fil: Motrich, Ruben Dario.     Síndrome de aorta media congénito en la edad adulta. A propósito de un caso

    We present the case of a 35-year-old patient with a diagnosis of congenital middle aortic syndrome corrected in childhood with aortic bypass interposition of a Dacron conduit. During follow-up, she was diagnosed with arterial hypertension, for which antihypertensive treatment was started and a stent was implanted in the conduit. A control CT of the aorta revealed a rib lesion suggestive of osteochondroma that compressed the duct. Cardiac catheterization confirmed hemodynamic stenosis due to extrinsic compression of the rib lesion at the level of the previously implanted stent. The CT imaging study helped to diagnose a complication at the level of the aorta that was  undetected in other imaging techniques.Presentamos el caso de una paciente de 35 años con diagnóstico de síndrome de aorta media congénita corregida en la infancia con bypass aórtico con interposición de un conducto de dacrón. Durante el seguimiento fue diagnosticada de hipertensión arterial por lo que se inició tratamiento antihipertensivo y se implantó un stent en el conducto. En un TC de aorta de control se apreció una lesión costal sugestiva de osteocondroma que comprimía el conducto. Se realizó un cateterismo cardiaco que confirmó la estenosis hemodinámica por compresión extrínseca de la lesión costal a nivel del stent implantado previamente. El estudio con imagen con TC ayudó a diagnosticar una complicación a nivel de la aorta que había pasado desapercibida en otras técnicas de imagen

    A Trapezoidal Octacyanoquinoid Acceptor Forms Solution and Surface Products by Antiparallel Shape Fitting with Conformational Dipole Momentum Switch

    A new compound (1) formed by two antiparallelly disposed tetracyano thienoquinoidal units has been synthesized and studied by electrochemistry, UV/Vis-NIR, IR, EPR, and transient spectroscopy. Self-assembly of 1 on a Au(111) surface has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. Experiments have been rationalized by quantum chemical calculations. 1 exhibits a unique charge distribution in its anionic form, with a gradient of charge yielding a neat molecular in-plane electric dipole momentum, which transforms out-of-plane after surface deposition due to twisted! folded conformational change and to partial charge transfer from Au(111). Intermolecular van der Waals interactions and antiparallel trapezoidal shape fitting lead to the formation of an optimal dense on Au(111) two-dimensional assembly of 1. The realization of novel properties emerging upon electronic covalent coupling between chromophores (i.e., bichromophoric systems) is a critical issue for the development of photo- and electrically active systems.[1–3] In this regard, the relative topology and orientation of the p-subchromophores, such as in A + B type p-systems in Figure 1, with 1D linear conjugation, 2D parallel conjugation,[4] 3D orthogonal spiroconjugation[5] or 3D conjugation[6] are key factors. On the other hand, studies of the distribution of the excess of charge in p-conjugated moieties in post-electron transfer events are central issues in photophysics and photochemistry, in energy storage[7] and in organic electronics.[8] In addition to this electronic provision, its embedment in different molecular forms is of relevance as these can define unique ways of shape fitting in supramolecular and surface assemblies. Joint electronic and molecular shape designs thus allow to build molecular-based synthons in a tailored manner towards new bulk and nano organized materials. El objetivo de este estudio fue estimar la proporción de pacientes con esclerosis sistémica (ES) que recibieron vacunación contra el coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2).     Impact of the first wave of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the outcome of neurosurgical patients: A nationwide study in Spain

    Objective To assess the effect of the first wave of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the outcome of neurosurgical patients in Spain. Settings The initial flood of COVID-19 patients overwhelmed an unprepared healthcare system. Different measures were taken to deal with this overburden. The effect of these measures on neurosurgical patients, as well as the effect of COVID-19 itself, has not been thoroughly studied. Participants This was a multicentre, nationwide, observational retrospective study of patients who underwent any neurosurgical operation from March to July 2020. Interventions An exploratory factorial analysis was performed to select the most relevant variables of the sample. Primary and secondary outcome measures Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify independent predictors of mortality and postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection. Results Sixteen hospitals registered 1677 operated patients. The overall mortality was 6.4%, and 2.9% (44 patients) suffered a perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection. Of those infections, 24 were diagnosed postoperatively. Age (OR 1.05), perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection (OR 4.7), community COVID-19 incidence (cases/10 5 people/week) (OR 1.006), postoperative neurological worsening (OR 5.9), postoperative need for airway support (OR 5.38), ASA grade =3 (OR 2.5) and preoperative GCS 3-8 (OR 2.82) were independently associated with mortality. For SARS-CoV-2 postoperative infection, screening swab test <72 hours preoperatively (OR 0.76), community COVID-19 incidence (cases/10 5 people/week) (OR 1.011), preoperative cognitive impairment (OR 2.784), postoperative sepsis (OR 3.807) and an absence of postoperative complications (OR 0.188) were independently associated. Conclusions Perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection in neurosurgical patients was associated with an increase in mortality by almost fivefold. Community COVID-19 incidence (cases/10 5 people/week) was a statistically independent predictor of mortality. Trial registration number CEIM 20/217

    HTLV-1 infection in solid organ transplant donors and recipients in Spain

    HTLV-1 infection is a neglected disease, despite infecting 10-15 million people worldwide and severe illnesses develop in 10% of carriers lifelong. Acknowledging a greater risk for developing HTLV-1 associated illnesses due to immunosuppression, screening is being widely considered in the transplantation setting. Herein, we report the experience with universal HTLV testing of donors and recipients of solid organ transplants in a survey conducted in Spain. All hospitals belonging to the Spanish HTLV network were invited to participate in the study. Briefly, HTLV antibody screening was performed retrospectively in all specimens collected from solid organ donors and recipients attended since the year 2008. A total of 5751 individuals were tested for HTLV antibodies at 8 sites. Donors represented 2312 (42.2%), of whom 17 (0.3%) were living kidney donors. The remaining 3439 (59.8%) were recipients. Spaniards represented nearly 80%. Overall, 9 individuals (0.16%) were initially reactive for HTLV antibodies. Six were donors and 3 were recipients. Using confirmatory tests, HTLV-1 could be confirmed in only two donors, one Spaniard and another from Colombia. Both kidneys of the Spaniard were inadvertently transplanted. Subacute myelopathy developed within 1 year in one recipient. The second recipient seroconverted for HTLV-1 but the kidney had to be removed soon due to rejection. Immunosuppression was stopped and 3 years later the patient remains in dialysis but otherwise asymptomatic. The rate of HTLV-1 is low but not negligible in donors/recipients of solid organ transplants in Spain. Universal HTLV screening should be recommended in all donor and recipients of solid organ transplantation in Spain. Evidence is overwhelming for very high virus transmission and increased risk along with the rapid development of subacute myelopathy
