Justifications-on-demand as a device to promote shifts of attention associated with relational thinking in elementary arithmetic
Student responses to arithmetical questions that can be solved by using arithmetical structure can serve to reveal the extent and nature of relational, as opposed to computational thinking. Here, student responses to probes which require them to justify-on-demand are analysed using a conceptual framework which highlights distinctions between different forms of attention. We analyse a number of actions observed in students in terms of forms of attention and shifts between them: in the short-term (in the moment), medium-term (over several tasks), and long-term (over a year). The main factors conditioning students´ attention and its movement are identified and some didactical consequences are proposed
Fano resonance in quadratic waveguide arrays
We study resonant light scattering in arrays of channel optical waveguides
where tunable quadratic nonlinearity is introduced as nonlinear defects by
periodic poling of single (or several) waveguides in the array. We describe
novel features of wave scattering that can be observed in this structure and
show that it is a good candidate for the first observation of Fano resonance in
nonlinear optics.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Optics Letters, slightly revise
Effect of nonlinearity on the dynamics of a particle in dc field-induced systems
Dynamics of a particle in a perfect chain with one nonlinear impurity and in
a perfect nonlinear chain under the action of dc field is studied numerically.
The nonlinearity appears due to the coupling of the electronic motion to
optical oscillators which are treated in adiabatic approximation.
We study for both the low and high values of field strength. Three different
range of nonlinearity is obtained where the dynamics is different. In low and
intermediate range of nonlinearity, it reduces the localization. In fact in the
intermediate range subdiffusive behavior in the perfect nonlinear chain is
obtained for a long time. In all the cases a critical value of nonlinear
strength exists where self-trapping transition takes place. This critical value
depends on the system and the field strength. Beyond the self-trapping
transition nonlinearity enhances the localization.Comment: 9 pages, Revtex, 6 ps figures include
The X(3872) and other X,Y,Z Resonances as Hidden Charm Meson-Meson Molecules
We report on some ideas concerning the nature of the X(3872) resonance and
the need for approximately equal charged and neutral components of . Then we discuss how some hidden charm states are obtained from the
interaction between vector mesons with charm and can be associated to some of
the charmonium-like X,Y,Z states. Finally we discuss how the nature of these
states could be investigated through different types of radiative decay.Comment: Presented at the Charm2010 Workshop, Beijing, Oct. 201
The \rho\rho interaction in the hidden gauge formalism and the f_0(1370) and f_2(1270) resonances
We have studied the interaction of vectors mesons within the hidden gauge
formalism and applied it to the particular case of the interaction.
We find a strong attraction in the isospin, spin channels I,S=0,0 and 0,2,
which is enough to bind the system. We also find that the
attraction in the I,S=0,2 channel is much stronger than in the 0,0 case. The
states develop a width when the mass distribution is considered, and
particularly when the decay channel is turned on. Using a
regularization scheme with cut offs of natural size, we obtain results in fair
agreement with the mass and the width of the and meson
states, providing a natural explanation of why the tensor state is more bound
than the scalar and offering a new picture for these states, which would be
dynamically generated from the interaction or, in simpler words,
molecular states.Comment: Version accepted for publicatio
Generating Automated News to Explain the Meaning of Sensor Data
An important competence of human data analysts is to interpret and explain the meaning of the results of data analysis to end-users. However, existing automatic solutions for intelligent data analysis provide limited help to interpret and communicate information to non-expert users. In this paper we present a general approach to generating explanatory descriptions about the meaning of quantitative sensor data. We propose a type of web application: a virtual newspaper with automatically generated news stories that describe the meaning of sensor data. This solution integrates a variety of techniques from intelligent data analysis into a web-based multimedia presentation system. We validated our approach in a real world problem and demonstrate its generality using data sets from several domains. Our experience shows that this solution can facilitate the use of sensor data by general users and, therefore, can increase the utility of sensor network infrastructures
Peer reviewe
Radiative open charm decay of the Y(3940), Z(3930), X(4160) resonances
We determine the radiative decay amplitudes for decay into and , or and of some of the charmonium like
states classified as X,Y,Z resonances, plus some other hidden charm states
which are dynamically generated from the interaction of vector mesons with
charm. The mass distributions as a function of the or
invariant mass show a peculiar behavior as a consequence of
the nature of these states. The experimental search of these
magnitudes can shed light on the nature of these states.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
