    Comparison of die geometry for cold drawing of multi-rifled steel tubes

    Multi-rifled tubes, i.e. tubes with multiple inner grooving are used in heat exchangers and boilers, providing favourable heat transfer conditions due to turbulent flow of cooling medium. Therefore, strict requirements are placed on the geometry of inner rifling. In production of such tubes, cold drawing with free-to-rotate rifled plug is the final drawing operation to achieve required dimensions. A Finite Element Method (FEM) based numerical model of the process was prepared in order to optimize the geometry of the die. The results of numerical simulations for two different die geometries show the difference in material flow and corresponding drawing force. The final dimensions of the tubes after drawing were compared with the customer`s requirements and a good agreement was found

    Analysis of internal astigmatism and higher order aberrations in eyes implanted with a new diffractive multifocal toric intraocular lens

    Background To evaluate the intraocular lens (IOL) position by analyzing the postoperative axis of internal astigmatism as well as the higher-order aberration (HOA) profile after cataract surgery following the implantation of a diffractive multifocal toric IOL. Methods Prospective study including 51 eyes with corneal astigmatism of 1.25D or higher of 29 patients with ages ranging between 20 and 61 years old. All cases underwent uneventful cataract surgery with implantation of the AT LISA 909 M toric IOL (Zeiss). Visual, refractive and corneal topograpy changes were evaluated during a 12-month follow-up. In addition, the axis of internal astigmatism as well as ocular, corneal, and internal HOA (5-mm pupil) were evaluated postoperatively by means of an integrated aberrometer (OPD Scan II, Nidek). Results A significant improvement in uncorrected distance and near visual acuities (p < 0.01) was found, which was consistent with a significant correction of manifest astigmatism (p < 0.01). No significant changes were observed in corneal astigmatism (p = 0.32). With regard to IOL alignment, the difference between the axes of postoperative internal and preoperative corneal astigmatisms was close to perpendicularity (12 months, 87.16° ± 7.14), without significant changes during the first 6 months (p ≥ 0.46). Small but significant changes were detected afterwards (p = 0.01). Additionally, this angular difference correlated with the postoperative magnitude of manifest cylinder (r = 0.31, p = 0.03). Minimal contribution of intraocular optics to the global magnitude of HOA was observed. Conclusions The diffractive multifocal toric IOL evaluated is able to provide a predictable astigmatic correction with apparent excellent levels of optical quality during the first year after implantation

    Amblyopia treatment of adults with dichoptic training using the virtual reality oculus rift head mounted display: preliminary results

    Background: The gold standard treatments in amblyopia are penalizing therapies, such as patching or blurring vision with atropine that are aimed at forcing the use of the amblyopic eye. However, in the last years, new therapies are being developed and validated, such as dichoptic visual training, aimed at stimulating the amblyopic eye and eliminating the interocular supression. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of dichoptic visual training using a virtual reality head mounted display in a sample of anisometropic amblyopic adults and to evaluate the potential usefulness of this option of treatment. Methods: A total of 17 subjects (10 men, 7 women) with a mean age of 31.2 years (range, 17–69 year) and anisometropic amblyopia were enrolled. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and stereoacuity (Stereo Randot graded circle test) changes were evaluated after 8 sessions (40 min per session) of dichoptic training with the computer game Diplopia Game (Vivid Vision) run in the Oculus Rift OC DK2 virtual reality head mounted display (Oculus VR). Results: Mean BCVA in amblyopic eye improved significantly from a logMAR value of 0.58 ± 0.35 before training to a post-training value of 0.43 ± 0.38 (p < 0.01). Forty-seven percent of the participants achieved BCVA of 20/40 or better after the training as compared to 30% before the training. Mean stereoacuity changed from a value of 263.3 ± 135.1 before dichoptic training to a value of 176.7 ± 152.4 s of arc after training (p < 0.01). A total of 8 patients (47.1%) before dichoptic treatment had unmeasurable stereoacuity while this only occurred in 2 patients (11.8%) after training. Conclusions: Dichoptic training using a virtual reality head mounted display seems to be an effective option of treatment in adults with anisometropic amblyopia. Future clinical trials are needed to confirm this preliminary evidence

    Laser Vitreolysis for Vitreous Opacities: A Prospective Study

    Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a YAG laser vitreolysis procedure used to remove bothersome vitreous opacities/floaters. Methods: The prospective clinical study included 42 eyes of 35 patients (age 32-81 years) with vitreous opacities generating visual disturbances. All patients were treated using the Ellex - Ultra Q Reflex YAG laser and underwent a complete eye examination before the laser vitreolysis and at 1, 3 and 6 months after the intervention. Changes in corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), central retinal thickness (CRT), intraocular pressure (IOP) and patient’s subjective perception of disturbances were analysed. Results: The average number of laser shots was 118 (6 - 310 shots), with a total average energy of 3.8 mJ per laser shot (2.2 - 9 mJ). The laser intervention was performed only once in a total of 31 eyes (73.8%), whereas it was necessary to perform the intervention twice in 10 cases (23.8%). No significant differences in CDVA were detected during the whole follow-up (p>0.40). No significant changes were found either in CRT (p>0.32). Concerning IOP (p<0.001), it was reduced significantly immediately after the intervention, returning to the pre-intervention level afterwards. The analysis of the responses to the questionnaire revealed that there was a mean improvement in subjective visual symptoms according to patients of 71%. No complications were detected in the sample during the follow-up. Conclusion: Laser vitreolysis is a minimally invasive treatment, allowing a complete or partial elimination of vitreous opacities and leading to alleviation of patient’s disturbances

    Validation of results of two different reductions for precision seamless cold drawn tubes

    This paper deals with the comparison of the seamless pulling process of precision seamless tubes using two different reductions from the viewpoint of geometrical stability using computerized tomography, from the point of view of mechanical properties, from the point of view of the surface temperature in the arrangement of the tribological tube-tool pair. Validation of the pipe drawing process also took place based on the finite element method in the simulation program DEFORM 3D. From the point of view of production rationalization, it is necessary to analyze stress and deformation states at different input dimensions for a particular final dimension for a given drawing method, in this case, a drawing whiteout plug method was used

    Anti-angiogenic activity of the flavonoid precursor 4-hydroxychalcone.

    Angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels, is necessary for cancerous tumors to keep growing and spreading. Suppression of abnormal angiogenesis may provide therapeutic strategies for the treatment of angiogenesis-dependent disorders. In the present study, we describe the in vitro and in vivo anti-angiogenic activities of the flavonoid precursor 4-hydroxychalcone (Q797). This chalcone (22μg/ml) suppressed several steps of angiogenesis, including endothelial cell proliferation, migration and tube formation without showing any signs of cytotoxicity. Moreover, we found a selective effect on activated endothelial cells, in particular with resting endothelial cells and the human epithelial tumor cell lines (HeLa, MCF-7, A549). In addition, Q797 was able to modulate both vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)- and basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF)- induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)-1/-2 and Akt kinase. It did not influence the nuclear translocation of p65 subunit of the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) when human endothelial cells were stimulated with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. Taken together this indicates that the Q797-mediated inhibition of in vitro angiogenic features of endothelial cells is most likely caused by suppression of growth factor pathways. The potent inhibitory effect of Q797 on bFGF-driven neovascularization was also demonstrated in vivo using the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. In summary, this chalcone could serve as a new leading structure in the discovery of new potent synthetic angiogenesis inhibitors

    Unitarized pion-nucleon scattering amplitude from inverse amplitude method

    In a recent work on low energy pion-nucleon scattering, instead of using chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) amplitude, we started from a pion-nucleon {\it soft-pion} result and used elastic unitarity directly as a dynamical constraint to construct first-order unitarity corrected amplitudes. The resulting amplitudes are crossing symmetric but, as the ChPT ones, satisfy only approximate unitarity relation. In the present work, we reconsider our approach and we apply the inverse amplitude method (IAM) in order to access the energy resonance region. We present the resulting S- and P-wave phase shifts that are shown to be in qualitative agreement with experimental data.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    U(3) chiral perturbation theory with infrared regularization

    We include the eta-prime in chiral perturbation theory without employing 1/N_c counting rules. The method is illustrated by calculating the masses and decay constants of the Goldstone boson octet (pions, kaons, eta) and the singlet eta-prime up to one-loop order. The effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of the eta-prime with the Goldstone boson octet is presented up to fourth chiral order and the loop integrals are evaluated using infrared regularization, which preserves Lorentz and chiral symmetry.Comment: 29 page
