The roles of the Malay in the process of Islamization of the Malay World: a preliminary study

    Get PDF
This paper will deal with problems concerning issues and theories of Islamization of the Malay world, with particular reference to the absence of the important element in these theories, which is the role and contribution of the Malays towards the process of Islamization in this region. Furthermore, there will be a discussion of the problem of generalization of existing theories, as well as issues concerning the limited amount of local evidence to support these theories. Sources for this analysis will be taken from studies of inscriptions, as well as early Malay texts, religious and non-religious texts. Comparison between the existing theories and direct and indirect evidence from sources will be used to elaborate on this matter. The ability of the early Malays to adopt and adapt foreign practices suggests that they also contributed to the entire process of Islamization of the Malay world one way or the other

Extending support services to students and community during COVID 19 Pandemic: the roles of university

    Get PDF
This paper highlights initiatives led by the Office of Student Development and Community Engagement, Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (KIRKHS), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in extending support services to students and community during COVID19 pandemic. During the Movement Control Order (MCO) period in Malaysia between March and June 2020, some KIRKHS students at IIUM Gombak campus decided to return to their hometowns while the rest remained at their hostels. Several financial and psycho-social issues involving KIRKHS students have been reported to the Kulliyyah management. In response, the Kulliyyah has embarked on various initiatives in ensuring the welfare and wellbeing of her students and the community are well-taken care of during such difficult period. This paper analyses measures taken by the Kulliyyah management team to address financial and psycho-social issues among KIRKHS students as a result of the period movement control order in Malaysia. Several initiatives have been successfully conducted to assist KIRKHS students who are in campus and at home such as KIRKHS COVID19 donation drive, IIUM Mental Health and Psychosocial Care Team (IMPACT), Online Get-Together session with KIRKHS students and also webinars on the roles of mosque during pandemic times. Some of the initiatives are still going on until today

Politico-cultural-religious milieu of Southeast Asia: an examination of pre-Islamic structures of authority and syncretic practices

    Get PDF
This paper analyses the structure of authorities and syncretic practices among the people in Southeast Asia before the spread of Islam in the region. The influence of South Asian tradition and culture in Southeast Asia was evident especially in the social and political spheres. Practices of Southeast Asian empires originated from the South Asian continent. In order to understand those influences this study analyses available materials related to the development of socio-political and cultural-religious environment in Southeast Asia prior to the advancement of Islam in the region. This study concludes that early kingdoms in Southeast Asia adopted the doctrines of devaraja and bodhisattva as the model of governance. This doctrine provides the Rulers with everlasting loyalty from their subjects. At the same time, religious life among the people in Southeast Asia highlights a unique practice. The syncretic practices of the people in Southeast Asia at that time prove that they did not follow blindly religious practices presented to them from the South Asian traditions. They adopt and adapt those practices to suit their own needs at that time

Growth, plant water relation and photosynthesis rate of young Theobroma cacao as influenced by water stress

    Get PDF
The effects of duration of water stress on the growth and physiological changes of young Theobroma cacao plants were investigated. Water was withheld for 4, 8, and 12 days before watering for a period of 20 weeks. Leaf area, leaf area index, leaf, root and stern dry weights were significantly reduced with duration of withholding water. There was a close relationship between photosynthesis rate and changes in leaf water potential. Leaf photosynthesis rate was reduced when leaf water potential dropped below -2.0 MPa. Determinations of plant processes showed a clear variation between three local clonal plants i.e. KKM 4, KKM 5 and KKM 25 with KKM25 recording the highest leaf water potential, stomatal conductance and leaf photosynthesis rate
