The purpose of this study was to explore the extent of e-space community framework in developing metacognitive strategies of pre-service teacher trainees towards ICT competency in contemporary learning technologies. The e-space community framework used in this study created a virtual community of practice (VCoP) that has the possibilities of developing the trainees’ metacognitive strategies in learning technologies. The framework looks at extending Vygotsky’s concept of Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) upon the VCoP. Evidence has shown that ZPD has the potential of helping a learner learn better by seeking guidance from surrounding peers. It is argued that the combination of ZPD and VCoP has the advantages of making teaching and learning more engaging and effective. The study proposed the use of an e-space community as the mediator to develop metacognitive strategies in learning technologies. The concept of e-space community is congruent with Wenger’s concept of Communities of Practice (CoPs), where people of the same interest do and learn better via regular interaction. It is also parallel with the earlier mentioned concept of ZPD as discussed by Vygotsky. The research used an explanatory mixed-method approach on 38 pre-service teacher trainees, where a pre-test, a mid-test and a post-test with a treatment intervention were supported by interviews. The quantitative findings of this study revealed that e-space community in this study gave very little impact on the development of the pre-service teacher trainees’ metacognitive strategies towards ICT competency in contemporary learning technologies. This was supported by the qualitative findings that concur with the fact that the participants did not prefer the official e-space platform chosen for this study and were more drawn to more convenient external platforms. The study has implications on how any official e-space platform of an institution should be designed and deployed in order to create more appeal and attract the targeted CoP to use and gain benefits from the intended objectives towards ICT competency

Among the major pollutants of diesel engine is soot. Soot is formed as an unwelcomed product in combustion system. Soot emission to the atmosphere leads to air global warming and health problem. Furthermore, deposition of soot particle on cylinder wall contaminates lubricant oil hence increases its viscosity. This reduces durability of lubricant oil, causing pumpability problems and increasing wear. Therefore, it is necessary to study soot formation and its movement in diesel engines. This study focuses on soot particle trajectories in diesel engine by considering diameter of soot particles that were formed at 18° ATDC crankshaft angle. These soot particle movement are under the influence of drag force with different radial, axial and angular settings and simulated by using MATLAB routine. Mathematical algorithm which was used in the MATLAB routine is trilinear interpolation and 4th order of Runge Kutta. Simulation was carried out for a combustion system of 4 valves DI diesel engine from inlet valve closing (IVC) to exhaust valve opening (EVO). The results show that small diameter of soot particles were transferred near the cylinder wall while bigger soot particle mostly moved in inner radius of the combustion chamber

Assessing the metacognitive awareness of online reading strategies among pre-university students

    Get PDF
To achieve successful comprehension, a student has to be fully responsible of their own reading. However, being able to read proficiently carries a greater meaning now as more online materials are involved. Many students have been discovered to have difficulties mastering these non-linear readings as it requires more sophisticated strategies compared to conventional linear readings. It is believed that being aware of one’s strategies could improve the quality of their comprehension and due to that, it is the objective of this study to find out the metacognitive online reading strategy awareness of the participants involved by using Survey of Online Reading Strategies (OSORS) established by Anderson (2003). 495 pre-university students in a Malaysian public university were chosen to be the participants of this study. At the time of the study, they were taking English Language course and English is their second language. From the study, it was discovered that all the participants were aware of most of the online reading strategies but with a very different level of awareness. The strategies under the Problem Solving (PROB) strategy was the highest and this category involves the use of specific techniques when readers encounter problems while reading online. The students involved portrayed their least involvement with the strategies under Support Strategy (SUP) where tools such as live chatting, note taking, and using pictures and graphs are used in assisting their online reading. Due to the inconsistency in the level of awareness discovered in the findings, it is concluded that metacognitive online reading strategies need to be included in the teaching curriculum and teachers too need to be aware and be an expert in utilising the strategies

As the years progress there has been rapid growth in Blended Learning (BL) adoption, but only few research focused on adoption issues related to learners, academic staffs and management. Thus, research is needed to guide universities in strategically examining learners, academic staffs and management adoption of BL. Accordingly, this study develops a model to facilitate university policy makers in their decision making to assess students learning and academic staffs teaching outcome. Furthermore, this study explores on the factors that influence BL adoption in universities, through an empirical study from the perspectives of learners, academic staffs, and management. In particular, it examines the current BL practice adoption effectiveness in universities. Based on extensive review of prior studies, survey questionnaires was designed and distributed to convenience samples of 87 students, academic staffs, and management in 3 Malaysia universities to validate the developed model. Next, Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to analyze the survey data. Findings reveal that supportive factors, attitude, learning mode, satisfaction, course management, and ease of use positively predict the perception of learners and academic staffs’ to adopt BL. Similarly, findings suggest that the perception of management towards BL adoption is positively determined by the strategy, structure, and support factors. Moreover, findings reveal that the impact of BL on learners’ effectiveness is positively predicted by achievement, engagement, involvement, retention, and cognitive outcome. Additionally, findings suggest that the impact BL on academic staffs’ effectiveness is significantly influence by delivery, performance, evaluation, motivation. Theoretical implications from this study contribute to enhance teaching quality by enriching course management, improving learning content, and facilitate management policies towards effective BL adoption

There has been rapid development in Blended Learning (BL) diffusion and prior studies mainly focused on issues related to students and lecturers in improving teaching and learning outcomes, but very few studies focused on institution’s readiness and diffusion issues. Thus, there is need for institutional-based research to guide universities, colleges, and polytechnics to strategically diffuse BL. Accordingly, this study develops a model to investigate the variables and associated factors that influence institutions' administration readiness to diffuse BL initiatives based on Diffusion of Innovation (DoI) theory and institutional BL adoption framework that comprises of mature implementation stage of BL. Quantitative research approach was employed and data was collected using online survey questionnaire from 223 e-learning administrators/managers in Malaysia universities, colleges, and polytechnics. Next, Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) technique was employed for data analysis. Results indicate that institutional structure, resource support, technology infrastructure, management strategies, and ethical considerations are key variables that positively predict administration readiness to diffuse BL initiatives in higher education. Additional results from Importance Performance Map Analysis (IPMA) in PLS-SEM suggest that institutional structure has the strongest effect on administrators’ readiness to diffuse BL and is also the most important variable that influences BL diffusion in institutions. Theoretically, findings from this study provide insights on how institutions’ administration perception and acceptance of BL approach can be enhanced. Practically, the developed model can be employed as a readiness tool to assess institutions current state in implementing BL environment and further provides a road map for future improvement
