    A Detail Study of Wavelet Families for EMG Pattern Recognition

    Wavelet transform (WT) has recently drawn the attention of the researchers due to its potential in electromyography (EMG) recognition system. However, the optimal mother wavelet selection remains a challenge to the application of WT in EMG signal processing. This paper presents a detail study for different mother wavelet function in discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT). Additionally, the performance of different mother wavelet in DWT and CWT at different decomposition level and scale are also investigated. The mean absolute value (MAV) and wavelength (WL) features are extracted from each CWT and reconstructed DWT wavelet coefficient. A popular machine learning method, support vector machine (SVM) is employed to classify the different types of hand movements. The results showed that the most suitable mother wavelet in CWT are Mexican hat and Symlet 6 at scale 16 and 32, respectively. On the other hand, Symlet 4 and Daubechies 4 at the second decomposition level are found to be the optimal wavelet in DWT. From the analysis, we deduced that Symlet 4 at the second decomposition level in DWT is the most suitable mother wavelet for accurate classification of EMG signals of different hand movements.

    User friendly system for the visually impaired in learning Al-Quran

    This study presents a method to enable the visually impaired Muslim to learn and read the Al-Quran using Braille Display with software help. The system reads the database which contains all verses of Al-Quran and user will need to select the verse and ayah to read. Besides that, this system can be used in a class to teach visually impaired students to learn Al-Quran. Every word or character typed by the instructor in the main Braille Panel will be transmitted to the sub Braille Panel that is connected to the main Braille Panel. The selected verse of Al-Quran and ayah will also generate an index before being transmitted to the Braille Panel. The index will be transmitted to the Braille Display for people to touch and read the display. A user friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI) will be used to fulfill the ergonomics for the visually impaired user's physical capabilities. Several approaches are used to design and implement the interface for the visually impaired like speech or sound output and Braille display. The Braille codes can be displayed using the Braille panel. The design interface and structure of the system for the visually impaired users in learning Al-Quran is presented

    Validating the ISO 9000 Construct of Measurement Instrument Through Application of RASCH Model

    There are numerous researches conducted on the issues related to ISO 9001 quality management system. Among the issue is the impact of the ISO 9001 quality management system implementation on the performance of the organization. However the findings from the research appeared as inconclusive. Few literature suggest that the inconclusive result may due to the level of ISO 9000 implementation therefore further research is required. Generally the data collected for these types of researches are through mailed questionnaires and analyzed it using SPSS and SEM. In line with that this study also developed questionnaires correspond to a 5 point Likert to assess the implementation of ISO 9000 in the organization. As a result 231 items are identified within five dimensions. The five dimensions are derived from ISO 9001 and ISO 9004 quality management standards requirement and guidelines. Among the dimensions are management responsibility, resource management, product realization, measurement improvement and innovation and organizational performance. The questionnaires are sent to 78 automotive based companies located in the Northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. 19 questionnaires were returned and used as pilot test to validate and calibrate the instrument. The responds from the organization are tabulated and run in WinSteps software for the purpose of validating and calibrating the instrument by implementing the Rasch ‘quality control' and reduction of items. Not all the outfit items are removed from the instruments, Rasch Model did provide room for the researcher to make decision either to remove or not those outfit items. In this study those outfit items need to be corrected in order to ensure that the instrument is reliable and fit to measure the performance of the organization. As a result 68 items are removed from the questionnaires

    Integration of SPT (N-value), mackintosh probe (M-value) and resistivity values for soft soil assessment

    2-D resistivity method has been used in association with Mackintosh probe and Standard Penetration Test (SPT) to investigate the ground properties at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Pulau Pinang. The purpose of this study was to determine the resistivity value of the subsurface material together with N-value and M-value of the particular location. The study also aimed to evaluate whether there is any correlation could be made by the parameters measured. Borehole record revealed that two types of soil exist up to 13 m; loose sand and stiff sandy silt. The loose sand recorded N-value of 8 and M-value of 170 having resistivity value of 790 Ohm.m. On the other hand, stiff sandy silt recorded N-value of 9-11, M-value of 135-170 and showing resistivity value of 415-785 Ohm.m. The results showed no clear relation between those geotechnical strength parameters with the resistivity imaging result. It is due to non-existence of distinctive differences in the electrical conductivity of the mentioned ground material when they are in the low strength bracket. However, the resistivity result suggested the presence of higher resistance material that is dry loose sand. The resistivity result was able to detect the water saturated zone near the ground surface, which showed low N-value and M-value

    Interpretation of 2D resistivity with engineering characterization of subsurface exploration in Nusajaya Johor, Malaysia

    2-D resistivity technique and pole-dipole array with spacing of 2 m electrode and total spacing of 80 m were adopted to map and characterize the shallow subsurface in a sedimentary area at Nusajaya, Johor. Geological field mapping and laboratory testing were conducted to determine weathering grades.Res2Dinv software was used to generate the inversion model resistivity. The result shows sandstone contains iron mineral (30-1000ohm-m) and weathered sandstone (500-1000 ohm-m). The lowest layer represents sandstone and siltstone with the highest range from 1500 through 5000 ohm-m. The weathering grade IV and V of sandstone in the actual profile indicates the range from 30 to 1000 ohm-m, whereas grade II and III in ground mass matched the higest range. Overall, the increase of weathering grade influenced both the physical properties and strength of rocks

    Correlation of resistivity value with geotechnical N-Value of sedimentary area in Nusajaya, Johor, Malaysia

    Electrical resistivity survey and the geotechnical SPT blow counts (N-value) were carried out simultaneously on the tropically weathered sedimentary rock mass for an excavation project at Nusajaya, Johor, Malaysia. This study aims to determine subsurface profile by using 2D-resistivity methods and correlate with N-value derived from boring works. Four boreholes were investigated in five survey lines that revealed the site is underlain by moderately to completely weathered sandstone, clay, silt and shale. Data analysis from 2Dresistivity image shows that zones with high resistivity value generally have high N-value, and vice versa. Five zones have inversed the proportional relation between N-value and resistivity Ωm value due to different types of soil lithology. It indicates that 2D-resistivity is significance to detect bodies of anomalous materials or estimating the depth of bedrock. As a conclusion, the integration of geophysical and geotechnical analysis provides a promise approach to understand some relationship concerning the subsurface subsurface ground through the combination of 2D-resistivity and N-value

    The nutrient composition and in vitro ruminal degradability of selected local plants used as goat feed in Malaysia

    A comparative study of nutrient composition and in vitro ruminal degradability of selected local plants, Macaranga sp. and Mallotus sp. was carried out and Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) was used as control. The results obtained from proximate analysis revealed that there were significant difference (P<0.05) of all nutrient composition for each local plant species against Napier grass. Dry matter content in Macaranga sp., Mallotus sp. and Napier grass were 50.92%, 45.41% and 13.04%, respectively. The crude protein content in Macaranga sp., Mallotus sp. and Napier grass were 7.18%, 6.78% and 3.88%, respectively. Mallotus sp. has the highest crude fat content (5.22%) followed by Macaranga sp. (4.85%) and Napier grass (2.84%). Crude fibre content in Napier grass, Mallotus sp. and Macaranga sp. were 25.38%, 15.47% and 12.00%, respectively. For the in vitro ruminal degradability, total gas produced by Napier grass, Macaranga sp. and Mallotus sp. were 31.00 ml, 28.67 ml and 23.33 ml, respectively. Acetic acid production in Mallotus sp., Napier grass and Macaranga sp. were 733.49 mM/ml, 605.61 mM/ml and 599.85 mM/ml, respectively. Propionic acid production was highest in Mallotus sp. (28.61 mM/ml) followed by Napier grass (24.45 mM/ml) and Macaranga sp. (24.23 mM/ml). As for butyric acid production, Napier grass showed the highest value (11.26 mM/ml), followed by Macaranga sp. (11.19 mM/ml) and Mallotus sp. (10.36 mM/ml). However, there was no significant difference shown in acetic, propionic and butyricacids production. Thus, based on the nutrient composition and in vitro ruminal degradability results, it shows that these local plants could be used as an alternative feed source for goats

    Development of Expert System for Flexible Pavement Design in Sabah

    Flexible pavement covers three quarters of the total local roads including Sabah. An ideal flexible pavement should have sufficient thickness to distribute the load to subgrade but not overdesign which cause extra cost. This research paper is conducted to develop an expert system for flexible pavement design in Sabah. It is aimed to reduce the hu-man error during the design phase in order to ensure the road quality. Sabah is selected as the location as Sabah is developing state that involve many on-going highway and flyover construction. Besides, expert system is important in this modern era to replace manual calculation that waste time and energy. Information about flexible pavement is collected through literature review from previous research papers and from human experts who have years of experiences in road construction. The information obtained is analysed and coded using Visual Basic Net. programming language on Microsoft Visual Studio. An expert system for flexible pavement design in Sabah is developed with a given name, ES-FPD. For validation test, comparison is made between results obtained from ES-FPD and manual calculation by expert evaluator. The results show ES-PFD passed both evaluation test and validation test.
