The study involves the effectiveness of potential black ants as biological agents in controlling beetle populations. The results of laboratory studies on the ability of black ant predation on the B. longissima found that the percentage of mean beetle are eaten by the group that has the number 100 black ants were higher and significantly different (P <0.05) as compared to group numbers 5, 20, 50 and 75 black ants. In addition, black ants also tend to attack and devour the B. longissima larvae and pupa stage compared to adult’s beetle via laboratory studies. It can be concluded that the B. longissima beetle has a great potential for causing considerable damage to the coconut tree which could affect coconut palm industry in Malaysia. However, the usage of biological agents as a control method had shown promising results in order to control the beetle infestation in coconut palm areas

Bricks are considered as important and strongest materials being used over the years. Commonly, bricks are made of clay mineral and usually used in construction of building wall. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of palm oil fuel ash (POFA) and expanded polystyrene beads (EPS) as a brick and its suitability as sound absorption material. POFA is used as partial replacement of cement while EPS as partial replacement of sand in the mortar mixture. Various percentages of EPS and POFA have been used which include 0%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% as sand replacement and from 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% as cement replacement respectively. Sound absorption tests were conducted using impedance tube. From this study, it has been identified that for sound absorption test, lowest result recorded is at maximum 25% POFA replacement with 50% EPS replacement with 0.011 sound absorption coefficient at frequency of 3500 Hz. The best sound absorption coefficient recorded is 0.998 at frequency of 250 Hz for sample with 0% EPS and 20% POFA replacement. It can be recognized that the brick produced have the excellent sound absorption

    Get PDF
Waste emulsion is one of the major toxic wastes that are generated from the metal processing industry. Emulsions are commonly used in the metal processing production as emulsified coolant and in power plant as lubricating oil. This paper presents a research to suggest the best coagulant in treating waste emulsion from manufacturing plant via coagulation method. Chitosan and bio-solvent will represent the natural coagulants, alum and polyaluminium chloride (PAC) will represent the industrial coagulant. Jar Test apparatus was used to treat the waste emulsion. It will be conducted in a batch test with a row of six beakers. One jar will be used as a control and the other five will be of different dosages of coagulant at 150 rpm of mixing rate, 30 minutes of mixing time and at room temperature. From the results, PAC showed to be the best coagulant with 82.29%, 95.45%, 99.95%, 96.4%, and 53% removal of COD, BOD O&G, TSS, and Turbidity, respectively, at a pH of 3.7 and minimum dosage of 2wt%. In conclusion, the PAC managed to break the oil and water bonding from the waste emulsion. Thus, it was suitable to treat the industrial waste emulsion

Effective moisture diffusivity and activation energy of rambutan seed under different drying methods to promote storage stability

    Get PDF
The effects of two drying methods, oven and microwave drying on the effective moisture diffusivity and activation energy of rambutan seed were studied. Effective moisture diffusivity and activation energy are the main indicators used for moisture movement within the material. Hence, it is beneficial to determine an appropriate drying method to attain a final moisture content of rambutan seed that potentially could be used as secondary sources in the industry. An appropriate final moisture content will provide better storage stability that can extend the lifespan of the rambutan seed. The rambutan seeds were dried with two drying methods (oven and microwave) at two level of the process variables (oven temperature; 40o C and 60o C and microwave power; 250W and 1000W) at constant initial moisture contents. The result showed that a higher value of effective moisture diffusivity and less activation energy were observed in microwave drying compared to oven drying. This finding portrays microwave drying expedites the moisture removal to achieve the required final moisture content and the most appropriate drying method for longer storage stability for rambutan seed. With respect to the process variables; higher oven temperatures and lower microwave powers also exhibit similar trends. Hopefully, this study would provide a baseline data to determine an appropriate drying method for longer storage period for turning waste to by-products
