Ketorolac eye drop induced allergic wheal and chemosis

    Get PDF
Ketorolac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which is prescribed rampantly in the treatment of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis due to its clinical efficacy of providing rapid relief from symptoms of allergy. There is a potential for cross sensitivity to aspirin. Hence, a leading question on aspirin allergy must be taken before prescribing the drug ketorolac

Background: This observational study was conducted in order to study the functional efficacy of locking compression plate in distal femur fractures as they are one of the most common type of fractures with bimodal age distribution affecting younger age group as a consequence of high energy trauma especially road traffic accidents and elderly population due to osteoporosis. Methods: 40 Patients who are skeletally matured with acute distal femur fractures were radiologically assessed type of fractures, amount of comminution, articular congruence and quality of bone. pretested proforma which include age, sex, occupation, mode of injury, type of fracture, time interval between injury and surgery, associated comorbid conditions and other associated injuries. Results: Off the 40 patients under study 21 showed excellent outcome according to neers rating system and only 5 had fair results, 3 patients had superficial wound infection and 5 developed knee stiffness. Conclusions: Locking compression plate produces better results and appears to be good method of management in distal femur fractures

Investigation on the consequential features of Southwest Monsoon-2007 Onset and Super cyclone "Gonu" using Satellite, Model and Ground-based data

Onset features of the Summer monsoon-2007 were analyzed using data from five different sources, namely, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3-hourly rainfall, National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) wind reanalysis data set, NOAA Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR), cloud imageries from the meteosat satellite, cloud base height and cloud occurrence frequency from a ground-based Vaisala Laser Ceilometer at Thiruvananthapuram. On the day of onset, 33 mm of rainfall was registered by TRMM satellite over south Kerala region with 80% cloud frequency and an averaged cloud base height of 2 km. On the next day, the formation of ‘Gonu’ super cyclone as a consequence of the convergence of monsoon onset surge in the Arabian Sea has caused the dissipation of cloud bands in the Arabian Sea and in the Bay of Bengal, except over the region of the system. This caused a lull situation for about ten days after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) declared monsoon onset. In fact, the remarkable characteristics of onset, such as deepening of westerlies and strengthening of low level jet streams were observed only after two weeks of IMD declared monsoon onset. Another unique behavior of 2007 monsoon onset was that the Arabian Sea branch of monsoon onset surge has advanced faster than the Bay of Bengal branch in the early stage

Convective thundercloud development over the western ghats mountain slope in Kerala

    Get PDF
Studies were carried out on the data from Braemore mountain observatory (lat. 8°45'N, long. 77°5'E) using a single-lens ceilometer (LIDAR), an electric field mill and a portable automatic weather station throughout the year 2010. The simultaneous data collected using the above instruments indicate the existence of strong updrafts followed by the formation of thunderclouds, a characteristic of the mountain slopes, during the thunderstorm months. Changes in atmosphere related to condensation and formation of water droplets during updraft events on the mountain slope could be detected from the ceilometer scattering data. Results of the study point to the cause of relatively more thunderstorm activity in that zone. This seems to be due to excessive updraft, which is strongly related to lightning activity in the region

Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay Bundles on complete intersection varieties of sufficiently high multidegree

Recently it has been proved that any arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) bundle of rank two on a general, smooth hypersurface of degree at least three and dimension at least four is a sum of line bundles. When the dimension of the hypersurface is three, a similar result is true provided the degree of the hypersurface is at least six. We extend these results to complete intersection subvarieties by proving that any ACM bundle of rank two on a general, smooth complete intersection subvariety of sufficiently high multi-degree and dimension at least four splits. We also obtain partial results in the case of threefolds.Comment: 15 page

Collagen-like fibres form the nap on the surface of endospores and the genes encoding these sequences have been hypothesised to be involved in the adhesion of the endospores of Pasteuria spp. to their hosts. We report a group of 17 unique collagen-like genes putatively encoded by Pasteuria penetrans (strain: Res148) that formed five different phylogenetic clusters and suggest that collagen-like proteins are an important source of genetic diversity in animal pathogenic Firmicutes including Pasteuria. Additionally, and unexpectedly, we identified a putative collagen-like sequence which had a very different sequence structure to the other collagen-like proteins but was similar to the protein sequences in Megaviruses that are involved in host-parasite interactions. We, therefore, suggest that these diverse endospore surface proteins in Pasteuria are involved in biological functions, such as cellular adhesion; however, they are not of monophyletic origin and were possibly obtained de novo by mutation or possibly through selection acting upon several historic horizontal gene transfer events.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

Guidelines for green certification of freshwater ornamental fish

    Get PDF
Keeping colourful and fancy fishes known as ornamental fishes, aquarium fishes, or live jewels is one of the oldest and most popular hobbies in the world. The growing interest in aquarium fishes has resulted in steady increase in aquarium fish trade globally. The ornamental fish trade with a turnover of US $ 6 Billion and an annual growth rate of 8 percent offers lot of scope for development. Unfortunately India’s share in ornamental fish trade is estimated to be less than 1 % of the global trade. The major part of the export trade is based on wild collection. There is very good domestic market too, which is mainly based on domestically bred exotic species

The Discovery and Nature of Optical Transient CSS100217:102913+404220

    Get PDF
We report on the discovery and observations of the extremely luminous optical transient CSS100217:102913+404220 (CSS100217 hereafter). Spectroscopic observations show this transient was coincident with a galaxy at redshift z=0.147, and reached an apparent magnitude of V ~ 16.3. After correcting for foreground Galactic extinction we determine the absolute magnitude to be M_V =-22.7 approximately 45 days after maximum light. Based on our unfiltered optical photometry the peak optical emission was L = 1.3 x 10^45 erg s^-1, and over a period of 287 rest-frame days had an integrated bolometric luminosity of 1.2 x 10^52 erg. Analysis of the pre-outburst SDSS spectrum of the source shows features consistent with a Narrow-line Seyfert1 (NLS1) galaxy. High-resolution HST and Keck followup observations show the event occurred within 150pc of nucleus of the galaxy, suggesting a possible link to the active nuclear region. However, the rapid outburst along with photometric and spectroscopic evolution are much more consistent with a luminous supernova. Line diagnostics suggest that the host galaxy is undergoing significant star formation. We use extensive follow-up of the event along with archival CSS and SDSS data to investigate the three most likely sources of such an event; 1) an extremely luminous supernova; 2) the tidal disruption of a star by the massive nuclear black hole; 3) variability of the central AGN. We find that CSS100217 was likely an extremely luminous type IIn supernova that occurred within range of the narrow-line region of an AGN. We discuss how similar events may have been missed in past supernova surveys because of confusion with AGN activity.Comment: submitted to Ap
