    On the Uniqueness of Solution of Magnetostatic Vector‐potential Problems by Three‐dimensional Finite‐element Methods

    In this paper, particular attention is paid to the impact of finite‐element approximation on uniqueness and to approximations implicit in finite element formulations from the uniqueness requirements standpoint. It is also shown that the flux density is unique without qualifications. The theoretical and numerical uniqueness of the magnetic vector potential in three‐dimensional problems is also given. This analysis is restricted to linear, isotropic media with Dirichlet Boundary conditions. As an interesting consequence of this analysis it is shown that, under usual conditions adopted in obtaining three‐dimensional finite‐element solutions, it is not necessary to specify div Ā in order that Ā be uniquely defined

    Direct to consumer advertising via the Internet, a study of hip resurfacing

    With increased use of the internet for health information and direct to consumer advertising from medical companies, there is a concern about the quality of the information available for patients. The aim of this study was to examine the quality of health information on the internet for hip resurfacing. An assessment tool was designed to measure quality of information. Websites were measured on credibility of source; usability; currentness of the information; content relevance; content accuracy/completeness and disclosure/bias. Each website assessed was given a total score, based on number of scores achieved from the above categories websites were further analysed on author, geographical origin and possession of an independent credibility check. There was positive correlation between the overall score for the website and the score of each website in each assessment category. Websites by implant companies, doctors and hospitals scored poorly. Websites with an independent credibility check such as Health on the Net (HoN) scored twice the total scores of websites without. Like other internet health websites, the quality of information on hip resurfacing websites is variable. This study highlights methods by which to assess the quality of health information on the internet and advocates that patients should look for a statement of an "independent credibility check" when searching for information on hip resurfacing

    The cranking formula and the spurious behaviour of the mass parameters

    We discuss some aspects of the approach of the mass parameters by means of the simple cranking model. In particular, it is well known that the numerical application of this formula is often subject to ambiguities or contradictions. It is found that these problems are induced by the presence of two derivatives in the formula. To overcome these problems, we state a useful ansatz and we develop a number of simple arguments which tend to justify the removal of these terms. As soon as this is done, the formula becomes simpler and easier to interpret. In this respect, it is shown how the shell effects affect the mass parameters. The primary goal of this paper is to raise awareness regarding gaps that exist with regards to Nigeria’s capabilities to adequately legislate, investigate and prosecute cases of cybercrimes. The major source of cybercrime legislation in Nigeria is an act of the National Assembly which is majorly a symbolic legislation rather than a full and active legislation. In perusing these avenues of inquiry, the authors seek to identify systemic impediments which hinder law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and investigators from properly carrying out their duties as expected

    Soil Moisture Content as a Determining Factor for Machinery Selection

    By applying the soil moisture content (SMC) prediction model to the weather data for the period from 1981-1993, the suitable workdays were obtained. Testing these results from the Rahad Scheme data records showed high significance. The correlation coefficient was found to be 0.99. show the effect of timeliness cost, a utilization factor (Ut) was determined by dividing the available working days by the total days. The utilization factor is then adjusted using a range of reliability from 30-80% depending on spare part availability and skilled labour. Further analysis were made to demonstrate the effect of workable days on the selection of implement width and cost using good, bad and average rainy seasons and different levels of reliabilities. It was found that the machine width was by the rainfall frequency

    Using routine blood test results to predict the risk of death for emergency medical admissions to hospital: an external model validation study

    YesBackground The Biochemistry and Haematology Outcome Model (BHOM) relies on the results from routine index blood tests to predict the patient risk of death. We aimed to externally validate the BHOM model. Method We considered all emergency adult medical patients who were discharged from Northern Lincolnshire and Goole (NLAG) hospital in 2014. We compared patient characteristics between NLAG (the validation sample) and the hospital where BHOM was developed. We evaluated the predictive performance, according to discriminative ability (with a concordance statistic, c), and calibration (agreement between observed and predicted risk). Result There were 29 834 emergency discharges of which 24 696 (83%) had complete data. In comparison with the development sample, the NLAG sample was similar in age, blood test results, but experienced a lower mortality (4.7% vs 8.7%). When applied to NLAG, the BHOM model had good discrimination (c-statistic 0.83 [95% CI 0.823 - 0.842]). Calibration was good overall, although the BHOM model overpredicted for lowest (<5%, observed = 229,predicted =286) and highest (≥50%, observed = 31, predicted = 49) risk groups, even after recalibrating for the differences in baseline risk of death. Conclusion Differences in patient case-mix profile and baseline risk of death need to be considered before the BHOM model can be used in another hospital. After re-calibrating for the baseline difference in risk the BHOM model had good discrimination but less adequate calibration
