    Australian Organic Market Report 2010

    Get PDF
This is the second report the Biological Farmers of Australia has commissioned to help industry bench mark the growth and health of its sectors. This report - another significant milestone in the two decade plus history of the rapidly developing Australian certified organic sector - builds the information base for industry to benchmark production and market value against past and current claims and estimates and will enable monitoring of future growth of the certified organic market in Australia and its farming and production base. In an industry characterised by operational diversity, this report allows for performance assessment by sector. The next publication in this series is planned in 2012 (biennial since the inaugural report in 2008) as a means of providing the wider industry with invaluable and realistic market information

Tiludronate and clodronate do not affect bone structure or remodeling kinetics over a 60 day randomized trial

Background Tiludronate and clodronate are FDA-approved bisphosphonate drug therapies for navicular disease in horses. Although clinical studies have determined their ability to reduce lameness associated with skeletal disorders in horses, data regarding the effect on bone structure and remodeling is lacking. Additionally, due to off-label use of these drugs in young performance horses, effects on bone in young horses need to be investigated. Therefore, the purpose of this randomized, experimental pilot study was to determine the effect of tiludronate and clodronate on normal bone cells, structure and remodeling after 60 days in clinically normal, young horses. Additionally, the effect of clodronate on bone healing 60 days after an induced defect was investigated. Results All horses tolerated surgery well, with no post-surgery lameness and all acquired biopsies being adequate for analyses. Overall, tiludronate and clodronate did not significantly alter any bone structure or remodeling parameters, as evaluated by microCT and dynamic histomorphometry. Tiludronate did not extensively impact bone formation or resorption parameters as evaluated by static histomorphometry. Similarly, clodronate did not affect bone formation or resorption after 60 days. Sixty days post-defect, healing was minimally affected by clodronate. Conclusions Tiludronate and clodronate do not appear to significantly impact bone tissue on a structural or cellular level using standard dose and administration schedules

Search for Stable Magnetohydrodynamic Equilibria in Barotropic Stars

It is now believed that magnetohydrodynamic equilibria can exist in stably stratified stars due to the seminal works of Braithwaite & Spruit (2004) and Braithwaite & Nordlund (2006). What is still not known is whether magnetohydrodynamic equilibria can exist in a barotropic star, in which stable stratification is not present. It has been conjectured by Reisenegger (2009) that there will likely not exist any magnetohydrodynamical equilibria in barotropic stars. We aim to test this claim by presenting preliminary MHD simulations of barotropic stars using the three dimensional stagger code of Nordlund & Galsgaard (1995).Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of IAUS 302: "Magnetic Fields Throughout Stellar Evolution

Partially incoherent gap solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

We construct families of incoherent matter-wave solitons in a repulsive degenerate Bose gas trapped in an optical lattice (OL), i.e., gap solitons, and investigate their stability at zero and finite temperature, using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations. The gap solitons are composed of a coherent condensate, and normal and anomalous densities of incoherent vapor co-trapped with the condensate. Both intragap and intergap solitons are constructed, with chemical potentials of the components falling in one or different bandgaps in the OL-induced spectrum. Solitons change gradually with temperature. Families of intragap solitons are completely stable (both in direct simulations, and in terms of eigenvalues of perturbation modes), while the intergap family may have a very small unstable eigenvalue (nevertheless, they feature no instability in direct simulations). Stable higher-order (multi-humped) solitons, and bound complexes of fundamental solitons are found too.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures. Physical Review A, in pres

SIMPEL: Circuit model for photonic spike processing laser neurons

    Get PDF
We propose an equivalent circuit model for photonic spike processing laser neurons with an embedded saturable absorber---a simulation model for photonic excitable lasers (SIMPEL). We show that by mapping the laser neuron rate equations into a circuit model, SPICE analysis can be used as an efficient and accurate engine for numerical calculations, capable of generalization to a variety of different laser neuron types found in literature. The development of this model parallels the Hodgkin--Huxley model of neuron biophysics, a circuit framework which brought efficiency, modularity, and generalizability to the study of neural dynamics. We employ the model to study various signal-processing effects such as excitability with excitatory and inhibitory pulses, binary all-or-nothing response, and bistable dynamics.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
