Multi-Scale Effects Of Forest Roads On Black Bears
The black bear (Ursus americanus) population within the Coeur d’Alene River watershed of northern Idaho is exposed to high hunting and recreational pressure facilitated by a dense network of forest roads. Bears are hunted using bait and dogs in spring and fall, with an additional non-lethal summer pursuit season. To understand the effects of these roads on black bear behavior we used data collected from 28 adult bears fitted with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) collars from June 1 2007 through the fall of 2008. We used locations acquired at 20 minute intervals to assess habitat selection and activity patterns of males and females at home range (2nd order) and within home range (3rd order) scales, both annually and seasonally. We tested the hypotheses that black bears 1) will show no response to road density in 2nd order habitat selection in areas of relatively consistent road density, 2) will show a functional response to roads in 3rd order habitat selection, i.e., use of habitat near roads will be inversely proportional to traffic volume, 3) show seasonal shifts in activity patterns and movement rates in proximity to roads. Avoidance of areas containing primary food sources or increased activity and energy expenditure may have profound consequences for bears. Understanding how traffic volume and road density influences habitat selection and movement patterns can therefore play an important role in management of the species

Characterizing the gut microbiome in trauma: significant changes in microbial diversity occur early after severe injury.
Background:Recent studies have demonstrated the vital influence of commensal microbial communities on human health. The central role of the gut in the response to injury is well described; however, no prior studies have used culture-independent profiling techniques to characterize the gut microbiome after severe trauma. We hypothesized that in critically injured patients, the gut microbiome would undergo significant compositional changes in the first 72 hours after injury. Methods:Trauma stool samples were prospectively collected via digital rectal examination at the time of presentation (0 hour). Patients admitted to the intensive care unit (n=12) had additional stool samples collected at 24 hours and/or 72 hours. Uninjured patients served as controls (n=10). DNA was extracted from stool samples and 16S rRNA-targeted PCR amplification was performed; amplicons were sequenced and binned into operational taxonomic units (OTUs; 97% sequence similarity). Diversity was analyzed using principle coordinates analyses, and negative binomial regression was used to determine significantly enriched OTUs. Results:Critically injured patients had a median Injury Severity Score of 27 and suffered polytrauma. At baseline (0 hour), there were no detectable differences in gut microbial community diversity between injured and uninjured patients. Injured patients developed changes in gut microbiome composition within 72 hours, characterized by significant alterations in phylogenetic composition and taxon relative abundance. Members of the bacterial orders Bacteroidales, Fusobacteriales and Verrucomicrobiales were depleted during 72 hours, whereas Clostridiales and Enterococcus members enriched significantly. Discussion:In this initial study of the gut microbiome after trauma, we demonstrate that significant changes in phylogenetic composition and relative abundance occur in the first 72 hours after injury. This rapid change in intestinal microbiota represents a critical phenomenon that may influence outcomes after severe trauma. A better understanding of the nature of these postinjury changes may lead to the ability to intervene in otherwise pathological clinical trajectories. Level of evidence:III. problem using a number of binary, uniform, parallel and deterministic

Infrared spectroscopy of Nova Cassiopeiae 1993 (V705 Cas). IV. A closer look at the dust
Nova Cassiopeiae 1993 (V705 Cas) was an archetypical dust-forming nova. It
displayed a deep minimum in the visual light curve, and spectroscopic evidence
for carbon, hydrocarbon and silicate dust. We report the results of fitting the
infrared spectral energy distribution with the DUSTY code, which we use to
determine the properties and geometry of the emitting dust. The emission is
well described as originating in a thin shell whose dust has a carbon:silicate
ratio of ~2:1 by number (1.26:1 by mass) and a relatively flat size
distribution. The 9.7micron and 18micron silicate features are consistent with
freshly-condensed dust and, while the lower limit to the grain size
distribution is not well constrained, the largest grains have dimensions
\~0.06micron; unless the grains in V705 Cas were anomalously small, the sizes
of grains produced in nova eruptions may previously have been overestimated in
novae with optically thick dust shells. Laboratory work by Grishko & Duley may
provide clues to the apparently unique nature of nova UIR features.Comment: 11 pages, 9 fugure
Interactional positioning and narrative self-construction in the first session of psychodynamic-interpersonal psychotherapy
The purpose of this study is to identify possible session one indicators of end of treatment psychotherapy outcome using the framework of three types of interactional positioning; client’s self-positioning, client’s positioning between narrated self and different partners, and the positioning between client and therapist. Three successful cases of 8-session psychodynamic-interpersonal (PI) therapy were selected on the basis of client Beck Depression Inventory scores. One unsuccessful case was also selected against which identified patterns could be tested. The successful clients were more descriptive about their problems and demonstrated active rapport-building, while the therapist used positionings expressed by the client in order to explore the positionings developed between them during therapy. The unsuccessful case was characterized by lack of positive self-comment, minimization of agentic self-capacity, and empathy-disrupting narrative confusions. We conclude that the theory of interactional positioning has been useful in identifying patterns worth exploring as early indicators of success in PI therapy
