Tuning the conductance of a molecular switch
The ability to control the conductance of single molecules will have a major
impact in nanoscale electronics. Azobenzene, a molecule that changes
conformation as a result of a trans/cis transition when exposed to radiation,
could form the basis of a light-driven molecular switch. It is therefore
crucial to clarify the electrical transport characteristics of this molecule.
Here, we investigate theoretically charge transport in a system in which a
single azobenzene molecule is attached to two carbon nanotubes. In clear
contrast to gold electrodes, the nanotubes can act as true nanoscale electrodes
and we show that the low-energy conduction properties of the junction may be
dramatically modified by changing the topology of the contacts between the
nanotubes and the molecules, and/or the chirality of the nanotubes (that is,
zigzag or armchair). We propose experiments to demonstrate controlled
electrical switching with nanotube electrodes

In this final degree project, a prototype robot has been designed and built. The goal is that the user can learn robotics, starting from a lack of knowledge of the topic and taking him to advanced levels in which he can implement the function that he wants.
Before designing and constructing this robot, a study was made of the state of the art, in order to situate this project in relation to others with similar technology. In this section, the preliminary study made before the project about the sensors and the microcontroller is also included.
In this paper, after the preliminary study there is a developmental phase. Firstly, the tools used and the selected sensors are explained, either those considered essential and integrated in the prototypes from the beginning, or those that are interesting but not essential. Following this, the design and integration of sensors on the board are explained, and each prototype is shown after its construction. In this report, all finished prototypes are included with their corresponding designs. So that the robot can be used from the beginning, several functions have already been programmed. Due to this, the installed sensors are operational, although these are only examples. The user can modify or include other functionalities which occur to him with these sensors or with others.
Finally, the tests to check the robot’s operation are shown. The report ends with the conclusions and possible future tasks in relation to this project

Scaling of the conductance in gold nanotubes
A new form of gold nanobridges has been recently observed in ultrahigh-vacuum
experiments, where the gold atoms rearrange to build helical nanotubes, akin in
some respects to carbon nanotubes. The good reproducibility of these wires and
their unexpected stability will allow for conductance measurements and make
them promising candidates for future applications . We present here a study of
the transport properties of these nanotubes in order to understand the role of
chirality and of the different orbitals in quantum transport observables. The
conductance per atomic row shows a light decreasing trend as the diameter
grows, which is also shown through an analytical formula based on a one-orbital
model.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Biobased polyester from soybean oil: Synthesis, characterization and degradation studies
Industrially used polymers derived from fossil fuels have a negative environmental impact when being disposed of. They could be efficiently replaced by natural polymers, which are potentially degradable and which can match or even surpass them in mechanical performance. In this work, a rigid thermosetting polymer is obtained by copolymerization of maleinated acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (MAESO) with styrene (St). MAESO is synthetized by epoxidation, acrylation and maleinization from industrial soybean oil (SO). Resin characterization is performed using FT-IR,1H NMR and SEC, while copolymer characterization includes a mechanical test, degradation test and SEM. The aim of this work is the replacement of unsaturated polyester (UP) and the optimization of the SO modification reaction in MAESO. The replacement of UP by 25, 50 and 100% of MAESO enables improvements in the mechanical properties. Additionally, it is assessed whether the replacement of UP by MAESO is enough to improve the degradation properties, and the effect of degradation on the mechanical properties is analyzed. MAESO-St copolymers improve the degradation process in relation to UP, and 240 days of in vitro degradation in the presence of Aspergillus niger and Alternaria alternata fungi causes cracks, surface damage and changes in the mechanical properties of the degraded copolymer.Fil: Bernard, Mariana Del Valle. Defective transport properties of three-terminal carbon nanotube junctions
We investigate the transport properties of three terminal carbon based
nanojunctions within the scattering matrix approach. The stability of such
junctions is subordinated to the presence of nonhexagonal arrangements in the
molecular network. Such "defective" arrangements do influence the resulting
quantum transport observables, as a consequence of the possibility of acting as
pinning centers of the correspondent wavefunction. By investigating a fairly
wide class of junctions we have found regular mutual dependencies between such
localized states at the carbon network and a strikingly behavior of the
conductance. In particular, we have shown that Fano resonances emerge as a
natural result of the interference between defective states and the extended
continuum background. As a consequence, the currents through the junctions
hitting these resonant states might experience variations on a relevant scale
with current modulations of up to 75%.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
