Observations of the planetary nebula RWT 152 with OSIRIS/GTC

10 pages, 6 figuresRWT 152 is one of the few known planetary nebulae with an sdO central star. We present subarcsecond red tunable filterHa imaging and intermediate-resolution, long-slit spectroscopy of RWT 152 obtained with OSIRIS/GTC (Optical System for Imaging and low-Intermediate-Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy/Gran Telescopio Canarias) with the goal of analysing its properties. The Ha image reveals a bipolar nebula with a bright equatorial region and multiple bubbles in the main lobes. A faint circular halo surrounds the main nebula. The nebular spectra reveal a very low excitation nebula with weak emission lines from H+, He+ and double-ionized metals, and absence of emission lines from neutral and single-ionized metals, except for an extremely faint [NII] lambda 6584 emission line. These spectra may be explained if RWT 152 is a density-bounded planetary nebula. Low nebular chemical abundances of S, O, Ar, N and Ne are obtained in RWT 152, which, together with the derived high peculiar velocity (similar to 92-131 km s(-1)), indicate that this object is a halo planetary nebula. The available data are consistent with RWT 152 evolving from a low-mass progenitor (similar to 1 M-circle dot) formed in a metal-poor environment. This paper has been partially supported by grant AYA 2011-24052 (AA, ES), AYA 2011-30228-C3-01 (LFM), ESP2014-55996-C2-2-R (AU) and AYA2014-57369-C3-3-P (LFM) of the Spanish MINECO (all them co-funded by FEDER funds). Inhibition of viscous fluid fingering: A variational scheme for optimal flow rates

    Get PDF
Conventional viscous fingering flow in radial Hele-Shaw cells employs a constant injection rate, resulting in the emergence of branched interfacial shapes. The search for mechanisms to prevent the development of these bifurcated morphologies is relevant to a number of areas in science and technology.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Two-colour two-laser techniques have unambiguously proved that photolysis of the o-/p-(chloromethyl)benzyl radical leads to the sequential two-photon generation of o-/pxylylene from α,α'-dichloro-o-/p-xylene.Perez Prieto, Julia, [email protected]

X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis of Ground Coffee

    Get PDF
Coffee is becoming one of the most popular beverages in Mexico. In the present work, X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) was used to determine the contents of several elements (with atomic numbers between 11 and 38) in 11 samples of commercial ground coffee, comparing with another one of soluble coffee and two of used ground coffee. Samples were dried at room temperature and pelletized. XRF analyses were carried out using a spectrometer based on an Rh X-ray tube, registering the characteristic x-rays with a Silicon Drift Detector. The system detection calibration and accuracy check was performed through the analysis of NIST certified reference materials 1547 (peach leaves), 1570a (spinach leaves), 1573a (tomato leaves), and 1571 (orchid leaves). As a general rule, the elemental concentrations measured are similar in all samples of coffee, in values not exceeding toxic levels. However, the differences among the elemental concentrations are shown

Validating the methodology for constraining the linear growth rate from clustering anisotropies

Redshift-space clustering distortions provide one of the most powerful probes to test the gravity theory on the largest cosmological scales. We perform a systematic validation study of the state-of-the-art statistical methods currently used to constrain the linear growth rate from redshift-space distortions in the galaxy two-point correlation function. The numerical pipelines are tested on mock halo catalogues extracted from large N-body simulations of the standard cosmological framework. We consider both the monopole and quadrupole multipole moments of the redshift-space two-point correlation function, as well as the radial and transverse clustering wedges, in the comoving scale range 10<r[10<r[\Mpch]<55]<55. Moreover, we investigate the impact of redshift measurement errors on the growth rate and linear bias measurements due to the assumptions in the redshift-space distortion model. Considering both the dispersion model and two widely-used models based on perturbation theory, we find that the linear growth rate is underestimated by about 510%5-10\% at z30z30 \Mpch, the discrepancy is reduced below 5%5\%. At higher redshifts, we find instead an overall good agreement between measurements and model predictions. Though this accuracy is good enough for clustering analyses in current redshift surveys, the models have to be further improved not to introduce significant systematics in RSD constraints from next generation galaxy surveys. The effect of redshift errors is degenerate with the one of small-scale random motions, and can be marginalised over in the statistical analysis, not introducing any statistically significant bias in the linear growth constraints, especially at z1z\geq1.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, 1 tabl

Effective medium electrical response model of carbon nanotubes cement-based composites

    Get PDF
The electrical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT) cement-based composites have been modeled in previous works by circuit models or homogenization theories. An alternative approach is the use of an effective medium theory with induced polarization: In this work, a new model based on the generalized effective medium theory of induced polarization (GEMTIP) with cylindrical inclusions is proposed. The presented results and discussion show its applicability to interpret the electrical impedance spectra of cylindrical cement samples doped with multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs). The MWCNTs were dispersed in different media: one nonionic surfactant, two superplasticizers, a cationic type polycarboxylate ether, and an anionic type naphthalene sulfonate. Particle dispersion and their sizes were analyzed by Ultraviolet–Visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) measurements. Two electrode electrical impedance spectra were measured and analyzed by circuital models and the proposed GEMTIP model. The results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed model in describing the Alternating Current (AC) response of cement/CNT composites irrespective of the dispersant agent used to elaborate the samples.CBUAConsejería de Transformación Económica, Conocimiento, Empresas Universidades de la Junta de Andalucía P18-RT-3128MinCiencias 82779Piezoresistividad en Pasta de Cemento con Adición de Nanopartículas de Oro o Materiales CarbonososUniversidad de GranadaInstituto Colombiano de Crédito Educativo y Estudios Técnicos en el Exterio
