Roberto Arlt : translation and the construction of genre

    Get PDF
[From the introduction]:Roberto Arlt is generally considered by critics the forerunner of the Latin American "boom". Arlt's innovative style reflects a fascination with the popular and a trenchant social realism fused with fantasy; his oeuvre is considered to have paved the way for later Latin American magic realism. Though distinguished names such as Jorge Luis Borges and Julio Cortazar praised his work, still, Arlt has long been considered by lesser figures a marginal voice, a tragicomic commentator on life, anautodidact and journalist, a writer who could not even spell. Only fairly recently has his place in the Argentine canon been granted; elsewhere, Arltian scholars and critics regard Arlt's work as an incisive portrait of its epoch, a much deserved milestone that secured the author a literary place that his contemporaries tried to deny him

Development of the Intercultural Citizenship in EFL 8th grade students

Developing cultural awareness and intercultural citizenship competences in high school students has become a challenge for English language educators as this task is generally associated to the foreign language class. Language and culture are interwoven and cannot be separated (Brown, 2001), therefore culture has become a topic of study in the foreign language class. This fact has become a challenge for language teachers as they may be missing valuable learning opportunities in the classroom when tackling this aspect with their students. Conducting research on how English language teachers can develop these competences in the class is therefore a necessity in the field and the main objective of this research. The objective of the study presented here is to determine how the implementation of a pedagogical sequence could influence the development of intercultural citizenship in EFL students. In order to do that, we designed a pedagogical sequence using the Intercultural Encounters model Lave and Wenger (1991) based on Byramos model of intercultural communicative competence (1997). Data was collected through the application of surveys, focus groups and studentsÕ reflections. Results showed that the pedagogical sequence implemented seemed to have helped students develop their intercultural competences as they have reported more empathy to the new culture and respect for the difference. Results also showed that teachers should follow a series of stages in order to design appropriate sequences. These stages should include contextualization, interactive and action-taking activities and student reflection on what has been done. It is hoped that these findings will contribute to the worldwide discussion about the pedagogical decisions needed to develop intercultural competences

To answer all the population health needs, public health systems must have articulated points of care, in order to give continuous and comprehensive health assitance. The implementation of Health Care Networks is the possibility of assuring population access to all the actions and dental services in a whole way. This research aimed to characterize the Oral Health Care Operating Structure (OHCOS) of the Health Region of Brusque, Santa Catarina. This is a quantitative descriptive and exploratory study. The gathering of primary data was performed by a structured questionnaire, applied to Oral Health Care Coordinators of each city involved. Data were tabulated and analyzed from fundaments that guide the conformation of Health Care Networks. The Health Region investigated shows points of care in Oral Health on the three levels of care. Because they are different sized cities, it was found diversity scenario in the implementation and organization stages of the OHCOS in each city. It was found a strengthening need of the Family Health Care Strategy and a need to expand the oral health care teams. Beyond that, it was found a limited integration between cities, in which disfavors the integrality if the oral health assistance

The allure of controversial brands: preferences for larger logo sizes

    Get PDF
In the subsequent research, I investigate factors that might play a role in people’s reactions to controversy. I propose that brands that take a stand on a controversial matter are perceived to take risks that could potentially damage its reputation. Which, in turn, leads controversial brands to signal power and status as long as observers perceive it as costly and observable (Spencer, 1973). Moreover, because one’s perception of status is filtered and guided through one’s convictions (Levy, Chiu and Hong, 2006)I hypothesize that beliefs concerning one’s personality would play a role to display a large logo from a controversial brand. Provided that there are two types of implicit personalities: entity theorists -believe society uses brands to signal who they represent to others, and incremental theorists -draw situational inferences on why individuals use a brand(Park and John, 2017; Preißinger and Schoen, 2018).I predict that entity theorists, under lack of power would use a controversial brand large logo as a signal to others

    Get PDF
Purpose – This study aims to research the job search journey of Portuguese Millennials. A job search journey is defined as the contact points between organisations and candidates throughout the job search process and the flow of this journey. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 13 individuals. Findings – This paper shows that the contact points established by individuals during the first stage of their job search influence the subsequent contact points chosen to gather information about the organisation and also the journey undertaken up until the decision is made to apply for the job. Originality/value – This research intends to contribute to the existing literature in two ways: it proposes a new concept which is designated the job search journey, and it maps out the job search journey of Portuguese Millennials.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Ceramide is a Mediator of Apoptosis in Retina Photoreceptors

    Get PDF
PURPOSE. The precise mechanisms involved in photoreceptor apoptosis are still unclear. We here investigated the role of ceramide, a sphingolipid precursor that induces apoptosis upon cellular stress, in activating this death in photoreceptors. METHODS. Rat retina neuronal cultures, with or without docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), were treated with the ceramide analog acetylsphingosine (C2-ceramide), and with a glucosylceramide synthase inhibitor. Ceramide synthesis in cultures treated with the oxidant paraquat was evaluated with [3H]palmitate. The effect of inhibitors of ceramide de novo synthesis, fumonisin B1 and cycloserine, on photoreceptor apoptosis was investigated. Apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential and Bcl-2 expression were determined. RESULTS. Addition of C2-ceramide induced photoreceptor apoptosis. Paraquat increased formation of [3H]ceramide in photoreceptors, compared to controls, while inhibition of ceramide synthesis, immediately before paraquat treatment, prevented paraquat-induced photoreceptor apoptosis. Fumonisin also reduced photoreceptor apoptosis during early development in vitro. DHA, the retina major polyunsaturated fatty acid, which protects photoreceptors from oxidative stress-induced apoptosis, completely blocked C2-ceramide-induced photoreceptor death, simultaneously increasing Bcl-2 expression. Inhibiting glucosylceramide synthase, which catalyzes ceramide glucosylation, before ceramide or paraquat treatment blocked DHA protective effect. CONCLUSIONS. Our results suggest that oxidative stress stimulated an increase in ceramide levels, which induced photoreceptor apoptosis. DHA prevented oxidative stress and ceramide damage by up regulating Bcl-2 expression and glucosylating ceramide, thus decreasing its intracellular concentration. This shows for the first time that ceramide is a critical mediator for triggering photoreceptor apoptosis in mammalian retina and suggests that modulating ceramide levels might provide a therapeutic tool for preventing photoreceptor death in neurodegenerative diseases.Fil: German, Olga Lorena. Thinopyrum ponticum, is the most disseminated halophyte speciescultivated for forage on hydro-halomorphic soils in the world. Theobjective of the present work was to identify the geographicareas fordevelopment of tall wheatgrass on halomorphic soils in Argentina, for forageand as feedstock for bioenergy. To define the agroclimate in Argentina, we considered the thermal and hydric limits of the species in its place of originand in locations where it is successfully cultivated around the world. The maps corresponding to the bioclimatic indices were drawn using a GIS, andthe map obtained by overlaying them defined the agroclimatic suitability. Thiszoning was finally superimposed on the drylands saline and alkaline soils inthecountry, thus defining the agro-ecological suitability of Argentina forthis species under different moisture regimes: moist-subhumid,dry-subhumid, semiarid to arid climate. The the agro-ecological zoning showsthe potential growing areas for tall wheatgrass in Argentina on soils withhalomorphism processes under dry climates.Fil: Falasca, Silvia Liliana.
