Time-averaging and exponential integrators for non-homogeneous linear IVPs and BVPs
We consider time-averaging methods based on the Magnus series expansion jointly with exponential integrators for the numerical integration of general linear non-homogeneous differential equations. The schemes can be considered as averaged methods which transform, for one time step, a non-autonomous problem into an autonomous one whose flows agree up to a given order of accuracy at the end of the time step. The problem is reformulated as a particular case of a matrix Riccati differential equation and the Möbius transformation is considered, leading to a homogeneous linear problem. The methods proposed can be used both for initial value problems (IVPs) as well as for two-point boundary value problems (BVPs). In addition, they allow to use different approximations for different parts of the equation, e.g. the homogeneous and non-homogeneous parts, or to use adaptive time steps. The particular case of separated boundary conditions using the imbedding formulation is also considered. This formulation allows us to transform a stiff and badly conditioned BVP into a set of well conditioned IVPs which can be integrated using some of the previous methods. The performance of the methods is illustrated on some numerical examples. © 2012 IMACS. Published by Elsevier B.V.
A CONTINUACION SE TRUNCA LA SERIE MATRICIAL DE MODO QUE EN UN DOMINIO ACOTADO EL ERROR ESTE UNIFORMEMENTE ACOTADO POR UNA CANTIDAD PREFIJADA DE ANTEMANO.Ponsoda Miralles, E. (1994).
Introduction: Acute respiratory infections are the leading cause of morbidity during the first years of life. Susceptibility to respiratory infections is determined not only by genetics, environment, socio-economic, and cultural factors; passive smoking is particularly important in this case.
Objective: Measuring the relationship between tobacco exposure and the frequency of primary care visits, the number of paediatric emergency room admissions, the number of hospitalisations and the number of diagnoses of respiratory infections during the infant's first year of life.
Methods: A group of 173 infants under 1 year of age was the subject of a retrospective cohort study. Information was obtained from maternal medical histories and routine health checks over a 3-month period.
Results: Exposed children visited primary care a mean of 4.95 times for suspected infection, while unexposed children visited primary care a mean of 4.53 times (p=0.429). Exposed children had a mean of 0.5 days of hospitalisation for respiratory infection and unexposed children a mean of 0.17 days (p=0.413). Exposed children had a mean of 0.05 emergency department admissions with suspected respiratory infection and unexposed children a mean of 0.353 (p=0.101). Exposed children had a mean of 3.85 diagnoses of respiratory infection and unexposed children had a mean of 3.49 (p=0.421).
Conclusions: There are slight significant differences in the use of health services between infants exposed to tobacco and those who were not exposed, with a greater likelihood of serious illnesses related to passive smoking
This paper investigates economic sources of time variation in aggregated liquidity on the Spanish
stock market over the 1992-2003 sample period. Using a vector autoregression approach, we examine
the dynamic relation between market liquidity and various macroeconomics, financial and market
factors. The results show that credit quality spread and monetary policy are particularly important in
explaining the liquidity’s variation. Market liquidity improves significantly in response to a negative
shock in credit quality spread. The results therefore suggest that credit quality spread shocks not only
influence market-wide liquidity directly, but also indirectly through their effects on monetary policy
[EN] : In this Final Master's Project, the perceptions and attitudes of moderate
wine consumption on health are analyzed according to primary care physicians in
Spain. A national survey was conducted on 199 physicians. The main results indicate
that the moderate consumption of wine for these professionals is 1 glass of wine (150
ml) per day. Red wine was associated with the benefit to the cardiovascular system.
In contrast, white wine was not associated with any health benefit. We also found 3
groups of doctors with different attitudes toward moderate wine consumption. Although
all of them agreed that, it was important to limit the amount of wine consumed by
patients. Finally, recommendations are made to wine companies and public health
This work analyzes the behavior in the short term of the main Spanish stock-exchange index returns,
under instability or stress circumstances, during the period 1992-2003. The empirical evidence shows
us the existence of a momentum effect in the accumulated abnormal returns after the positive shocks,
nevertheless the less homogenous behavior of the same ones after the negative shocks suggested the
possibility that the day of the week in which the shock, positive or negative, took place influenced
significantly in the later behavior of the returns as indeed were verified. Also, and of complementary
form, it was analyzed the influence of the abnormal returns and the effect day of the week on the yield
and conditional volatileness from a model GARCH(1,1) having been significant evidences of the
agreement of both to the day of the week in which such abnormal returns take place
