Volume-preserving mean curvature flow of revolution hypersurfaces in a Rotationally Symmetric Space

In an ambient space with rotational symmetry around an axis (which include the Hyperbolic and Euclidean spaces), we study the evolution under the volume-preserving mean curvature flow of a revolution hypersurface M generated by a graph over the axis of revolution and with boundary in two totally geodesic hypersurfaces (tgh for short). Requiring that, for each time t, the evolving hypersurface M_t meets such tgh ortogonally, we prove that: a) the flow exists while M_t does not touch the axis of rotation; b) throughout the time interval of existence, b1) the generating curve of M_t remains a graph, and b2) the averaged mean curvature is double side bounded by positive constants; c) the singularity set (if non-empty) is finite and discrete along the axis; d) under a suitable hypothesis relating the enclosed volume to the n-volume of M, we achieve long time existence and convergence to a revolution hypersurface of constant mean curvature.Comment: 24 pages. We have added some lines at the beginning explaining the notation, and clarified a little bit more the proofs of Proposition 1 and Theorems 5 and 10, the statements of Proposition 2 and Corollary 3 and an argument in Remark 1. We have also completed reference 18. A version of this paper will appear in Mathematische Zeitschrif

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Mayors facing local government reforms: from muncipal organization leadership to public management transformation processes

    Get PDF
Local public authorities have traditionally been an area for experimenting with reforms of varying impact for the overall institutional framework. In implementing these reforms, a prominent part has been taken by mayors in their role as the highest-ranking officials in their organisations. This article reports evidence for, and reflects on, the connection between the figure of the Spanish mayor (in the way mayors perceive their own role) and their relations with both the municipal governments they head and the processes of transformation to which these governments are exposed. Based on data obtained from the project entitled “Political Leaders in European Cities”, concerned with identifying mayors' attitudes towards several aspects of local government, this article develops its argument in two stages. In the first stage, we describe the profiles of Spanish mayors, with a prime focus on how they perceive their functions and the importance they attach to their role as managers of the local authority. In the second stage, we analyze the connection between these perceptions and the relations the mayors establish with the local authority (that is, the relations between politicians and public executives and governmental employees). Finally, based on the classifications made, the positions taken up by mayors in relation to various processes of government reform are determined. The conclusions allow for various scenarios of administrative reform to be established based on the degree of involvement of the respective mayors, and they also point to further lines of research.</span

Acabado y pulido de resinas compuestas. Estudio con microscopio electrónico de barrido

    Get PDF

An exemplary life? A personal construct analysis of the autobiography of Rudolf Hoess, Commandant of Auschwitz

This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis Group in Journal of Constructivist Psychology on 27 August 2014, available online at: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/10720537.2013.849214This article analyses the autobiography of Rudolf Hoess, commandant of Auschwitz. Textual grid, ABC and self-characterisation analyses of the autobiography are used to construe Hoess’s writing. The textual grid analysis suggests that Hoess saw his adult self as being different from others but his young self as similar to Jews. Conflicts in self-construing are identified. The ABC analysis indicates that, from his perspective, it made sense for Hoess to choose not to leave the concentration camp service. The self-characterisation analysis focuses on whether Hoess experienced Kellyan guilt and it suggests that he did, but in unexpected contexts.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

Experimental investigation on ferritic stainless steel composite slabs

    Get PDF
Steel-concrete composite structures are well established in the construction of floors and roofing, being interesting solutions as steel decks act as formwork for relatively large spans and support the weight of the concrete and construction loads. However, the use of stainless steel decks in such structures has been very limited, although their mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, aesthetics and emissivity make them excellent for visually exposed composite floor slabs where the thermal capacity of the slab is mobilized as part of an energy saving strategy. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation on composite slabs with trapezoidal ferritic stainless steel decks in order to assess the performance of such structural members. Composite slabs made from EN1.4003 ferritic stainless steel and common C25/30 concrete were tested in two series of span lengths in order to determine the different parameters defining their ultimate longitudinal shear response. Reference tests on slabs with galvanized steel were also conducted with identical geometries and configurations. The m and k parameters used in the m-k Method and the design longitudinal shear strength tu,Rd corresponding to the Partial Connection Method have been determined according to EN 1994-1-1:2004. Finally, the behaviour of these composite slabs was compared with the performance shown by the conducted reference slabs with galvanized steel deck in terms of Ultimate and Serviceability Limit States.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
