Contents: Summary of findings -- Introduction -- Review of previous work -- Hydrologic budgets -- Relationship between the Honolulu Aquifer and the Pearl Harbor Aquifer -- Relationship between the Wahiawa High Level Aquifer and the Pearl Harbor Aquifer -- Waianae basalt sector of the Pearl Harbor Aquifer -- History of the draft -- Heads in southern Oahu -- Groundwater leakage -- Behavior of the aquifers of southern Oahu--simulated by an analytical modelillustrations, maps ; Bibliography: p. 83.The aquifers of all of Southern Oahu from Manoa Valley to the Waianae Mountains are hydraulically connected. For convenience the Pearl Harbor region is considered as extending from Red Hill to the Waianae crest and the Honolulu region from Manoa to Red Hill. This arbitrary division has been employed in all hydrologic studies of Southern Oahu. The total natural groundwater flow passing through the Pearl Harbor region lies between 200 and 250 mgd (million gallons per day). This includes infiltration from rainfall and subsurface inflows from the Wahiawa high-level aquifer and from the rift zones of the Koolau and Waianae Ranges. It is reasonable to assign a natural flux of 220 mgd to the Pearl Harbor region for modeling purposes. In Honolulu the natural flux is about 60 mgd

illustrations, maps, Bibliography: pages 128-130.Prepared in cooperation with the State of Hawaii, Dept. of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Water and Land Development. The work investigated the basal groundwater supply in southern Oahu, determine the geologic and hydrologic conditions that control the water and the amount of additional water that can be developed in the area. The study is a part of a series of comprehensive investigations of the water resources of the island of Oahu made by the U.S. Geological Survey in its cooperative program in Hawaii. The report describes the basal aquifer, the relation of fresh to salt water in the aquifer, and the effects of pumping on the quality of the basal supply through 1958. It gives estimates of the quantity of additional water that can be developed, methods of development, and the chemical quality of the water.Hawaii Economic Planning and Coordination AuthorityCity and County of Honolul

Predictive Archaeological Modeling using GIS-Based Fuzzy Set Estimation: A Case Study in Woodford County, Kentucky

    Get PDF
Analytic predictive archaeological models can have great utility for state Departments of Transportation, but it is difficult to model the likelihood of prehistoric settlement using geographical proxy predictor variables because of the complexity of how settlement choices were actually made, and the complex interaction between these variables using GIS. In many cases classic statistical modeling approaches require too much data to be useful. This research reports on a preliminary predictive model that combines Spatial Analyst and fuzzy logic modeling to capture expert archaeological knowledge and convert this into predictive surface. A test area was defined in Woodford County, KY and five influencing factors were defined and calculated using ArcMap. Locations were sampled and probabilities estimated using both small and large group structured processes from a range of archeologists that fed an iterative fuzzy logic induction process. An output probability function was generated to create a predictive decision support layer

Franchisings influence on the entrepreneurial paradigm within the SA retail tyre franchise industry

This paper proposes a franchise framework to ensure improved alignment between the franchisee and the franchisor in the South African retail tyre franchise industry. Countless studies have established that worldwide franchises offer more sustainable business development for entrepreneurs and a higher success rate for start-up businesses. This is, however, not an exclusive formula for success as the relationship between the franchisee and franchisor is dynamic with the economic landscape always changing. Entrepreneurs often display traits that do not always coincide with the franchisor’s framework. By developing a framework, the study aimed to supply possible solutions for improved alignment between the franchisee and the franchisor resulting in a prosperous relationship enabling economic growth and impacting positively on the unemployment crises in South Africa. A literature study was followed up with a case study research approach. The context was singular, namely a branded fitment centre franchise within the tyre fitment industry in South Africa. A schedule of interview protocols was undertaken with embedded multiple units of analyses based on feedback from franchise industry expert, franchisor representatives and franchisees who own various fitment centres. The case study research explored the factors that contributed to the successful alignment of the entrepreneurial paradigm to the franchise network requirements within a national franchise retail tyre fitment brand. Factors that ensure improved alignment between the franchisee and the franchisor requirements were explored in this research. Franchising provides comparable risks and benefits associated with other entrepreneurial ventures. However, entrepreneurs have a stronger chance of survival when aligning themselves with a franchise network. Franchising is critical for economic development. The study indicates that franchising influences the entrepreneurial paradigm. The entrepreneurial spirit needs to be curtailed to ensure compliance at times.Thesis (MBA) -- Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences, Business Administration, 202

    Improving Software Citation and Credit

The past year has seen movement on several fronts for improving software citation, including the Center for Open Science's Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Guidelines, the Software Publishing Special Interest Group that was started at January's AAS meeting in Seattle at the request of that organization's Working Group on Astronomical Software, a Sloan-sponsored meeting at GitHub in San Francisco to begin work on a cohesive research software citation-enabling platform, the work of Force11 to "transform and improve" research communication, and WSSSPE's ongoing efforts that include software publication, citation, credit, and sustainability. Brief reports on these efforts were shared at the BoF, after which participants discussed ideas for improving software citation, generating a list of recommendations to the community of software authors, journal publishers, ADS, and research authors. The discussion, recommendations, and feedback will help form recommendations for software citation to those publishers represented in the Software Publishing Special Interest Group and the broader community.Comment: Birds of a Feather session organized by the Astrophysics Source Code Library (ASCL, http://ascl.net/ ); to be published in Proceedings of ADASS XXV (Sydney, Australia; October, 2015). 4 page
