Vitreomacular Traction and Outer Retinal Structural Changes

    Get PDF
In this case report we aimed to present the outer retinal structural changes secondary to vitreomacular traction (VMT). Outer retinal structural changes occurring secondary to VMT due to incomplete posterior vitreous detachment were described retrospectively with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography in 3 eyes of 3 patients. The patients ranged in age from 58 to 65 years and best corrected visual acuity in the 3 eyes was 4/10, 8/10, and 9/10. All of the patients were symptomatic and exhibited outer retinal microholes at the fovea extending from the retinal pigment epithelium to outer limiting membrane, with an overlying operculum on the detached posterior hyaloid membrane over the macula following spontaneous resolution of VMT. In the mean follow-up period of 32 months, the outer retinal microholes decreased in size but did not completely resolve. As demonstrated in these cases, VMT can cause small outer retinal layer defects without signs of full-thickness macular hole. These lesions can cause symptoms and affect visual function, and may be permanent structural changes

The present study reports chemical composition, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential of essential oils from leaves and twigs of Myrtus communis L. subsp. communis from Turkey. Essential oils were obtained separately from leaves and twigs of Myrtus communis subsp. communis (MC) by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus. Chemical compositions were determined using GC/MS. Antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of essential oils were tested by α-amylase inhibitory, 5-lipoxygenase inhibitory and DPPH/ABTS radical scavenging methods, respectively. The major compounds of essential oil of Myrtus communis subsp. communis leaves (MCLEO) were α-pinene (35.6%), 1,8-cineole (28.3%), linalool (10.5%), and limonene (8.2%), while the major constituents of essential oil of Myrtus communis subsp. communis twigs (MCTEO) were α-pinene (30.7%), 1,8-cineole (23.5%), p-cymene (13.3%) and limonene (11.9%). MCLEO and MCTEO showed good and moderate radical scavenging activity with IC50  values of 124.40 µg/mL and 390.10 µg/mL for ABTS radical, respectively. MCLEO and MCTEO exhibited significant radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 34.13 µg/mL and 28.15 µg/mL for DPPH radical, respectively. Also, MCLEO and MCTEO displayed strong and good antidiabetic activity with IC50 values of 29.94 µg/mL and 159.80 µg/mL against α-amylase enzyme, respectively. Finally, MCLEO and MCTEO showed good anti-inflammatory activity with IC50 values 86.10 µg/ mL and 96.55 µg/mL against 5-lipoxygenase enzyme, respectively. From the present study it can be concluded that essential oils, especially MCLEO, possess good antidiabetic, anti- inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Also, this is the first study on chemical composition of MCTEO from Turkey, as well as on α-amylase inhibitory and 5-lipoxygenase inhibitory activities of MCLEO and MCTEO

ÖZETAmaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı üç farklı kanama durdurucu ajanın self-etch bir adezivin mikro-gerilim bağlanma dayanımına etkilerinin değerlendirilmesidir.Gereç ve Yöntemler: Son altı ay içinde çekilmiş, on iki adet çürüksüz daimi molar diş kullanıldı. Veriler Tek Yönlü ANOVA ve Tukey Çoklu Karşılaştırma testleriyle analiz edildi (α=0.05).Bulgular: Grupların bağlanma değerleri (ortalama ± SS (MPa)); I: 28.81±6.84, II: 27.38±4.89, III: 24.89±5.80, IV: 24.73±7.14 şeklinde bulunmuştur. Kanama durdurucu ajanlar ve kontrol grubu arasında istatiksel açıdan önemli fark gözlenmemiştir (p>0.05).Sonuç: Kanama durdurucu ajanlar kullanılarak dentin yüzeyinin kontamine edilmesi self etch adeziv sistemlerin bağlanma dayanımını olumsuz yönde etkilememektedir. Kanama durdurucu ajanlar self etch adeziv sistemlerin bağlanma dayanımını azaltmaksızın kanama kontrolünde kullanılabilirler

Self-reported TV and computer time do not represent accelerometer-derived total sedentary time in 10 to 12-year-olds

Screen-time activities are often used as proxies for sedentary time. We studied associations of self-reported television (TV), computer and total screen-time with accelerometer-derived total sedentary time in European children (10-12 years). Analyses showed significant positive associations between TV, computer and total screen-time with total sedentary time for the total sample, however, the explained variance was low and stratified analyses only revealed a significant positive association between total screen-time and total sedentary time in boys and between computer time and total sedentary time in Dutch children. This suggests that self-reported TV and computer time do not adequately reflect total sedentary time in schoolchildre

Systemic Immune Inflammation-Index and CANLPH Score in Patients with Mitral Stenosis Undergoing Balloon Valvuloplasty

Objective: to evaluate CANLPH score and systemic immune inflammation index (SII) in patients with symptomatic rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) undergoing percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty (PMBV). Methods: 62 patients who underwent PMBV in our clinic between 2018 and 2021 were included retrospectively. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to echo score. The CANLPH score was calculated from the cut-off values of C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to hemoglobin ratio (PHR), determined with the Youden index and SII by the formula platelet x neutrophil/lymphocyte. P \u3c0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age of the patients was 44.5±10.4 years (40 female, 64.5%). The mean values of SII and CANLPH scores were higher in the Echo score \u3e8 group (p \u3c0.001, both). The mean mitral gradient before and after PMBV was 12.6±5.7mm Hg and 5.0±2.4 mm Hg, and the mean valve area was 1.12±0.27 cm2 and 1.85±0.29 cm2. A statistically significant and negative correlation was observed between the gradient decrease after the procedure and the CANLPH score and SII (r=-0.426, p=0.001 and r=-0.418, p=0.001, respectively). In receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, it was concluded that the ability of CANPLH score to predict the higher Echo scores was noninferior to SII with an area under curve (AUC:0.820 (0.701-0.906) and AUC:0.786 (0.664-0.880), z statistics 0.576 and p=0.564. Conclusion: SII and CANLPH scores are correlated with Echo score. A significant negative relationship was found with both biomarkers and gradient decrease after the PMBV

Background: The association between objectively assessed sedentary time and metabolic risk factors in childhood have rarely been studied. Therefore, we examined the independent relationship between objectively assessed and self-rated sedentary time and indicators of metabolic health in Dutch and Hungarian 10–12 year olds. Methodology/Principal Findings: We performed a cross-sectional survey in primary schools. Participants were Dutch and Hungarian girls (n = 73, aged 12.260.6 years, 18 % overweight/obese) and boys (n = 69, aged 12.260.7 years, 38% overweight/obese). Sedentary time and physical activity were assessed by the Actigraph accelerometer. TV and PC time were assessed by self-report. Adiposity indicators included body weight, height, and waist circumference (WC). Fasting plasma glucose, C-peptide, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides were determined in capillary blood and summed into a metabolic risk score. Linear regression analyses were adjusted for physical activity, number of sedentary bouts and WC. Children spent on average 7.6 hours of their daily waking time in sedentary behavior and self-reported 116664 min/day watching TV and 85657 min/day using the computer. Comparing the 1 st and 4 th quartile of objectively assessed sedentary time, C-Peptide levels, WC and BMI were significantly higher in the most sedentary quartile, while the difference in metabolic risk score was borderline significant (p = 0.09). Comparing the 1 st and 4 th quartile of TV time, BMI was significantly higher in the most sedentary quartile, while th

WOS: 000214141500010PubMed ID: 25245233Background The Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome (SGBS) is an overgrowth condition characterised by macrosomia, mental deficiency, large head, prominent skull sutures, midface deficiency, hypertelorism, broad nose, wide mouth, macroglossia, malocclusion, highly arched palate, and musculoskeletal and limb abnormalities. The aim of this case report is to present clinical and oral findings of an 8-year-old boy who had been diagnosed with SGBS. Case report This patient had supernumerary nipples on the right side, cubitus valgus webbed fingers, scoliosis, umbilical hernia, a coarse face, macrocephaly, hypertelorism, a short broad nose, a wide mouth, a straight facial profile and hearing loss. The patient also had macroglossia, diastemas, over-retained primary tooth, absent mandibular permanent central incisors, and highly arched palate. Lateral cephalometric analysis revealed a large anterior cranial base, a large maxilla and mandible, a large inferior face height, and skeletal Class III jaw relationship. Follow-up After extraction of the over-retained primary central tooth, a partial prosthesis was fabricated in order to maintain function. The patient has been recalled regularly at 6-month intervals for 2 years. Over the following years the prosthesis was replaced due to facial growth. Conclusion Long term follow-up is essential for the patient with SGBS. Preventive dental care, including oral hygiene instructions, diet counselling and the use of fluoride has been implemented
