Damping and frequency shift in the oscillations of two colliding Bose-Einstein condensates
We have investigated the center-of-mass oscillations of a Rb87 Bose-Einstein
condensate in an elongated magneto-static trap. We start from a trapped
condensate and we transfer part of the atoms to another trapped level, by
applying a radio-frequency pulse. The new condensate is produced far from its
equilibrium position in the magnetic potential, and periodically collides with
the parent condensate. We discuss how both the damping and the frequency shift
of the oscillations are affected by the mutual interaction between the two
condensates, in a wide range of trapping frequencies. The experimental data are
compared with the prediction of a mean-field model.Comment: 5 RevTex pages, 7 eps figure
Intense slow beams of bosonic potassium isotopes
We report on an experimental realization of a two-dimensional magneto-optical
trap (2D-MOT) that allows the generation of cold atomic beams of 39K and 41K
bosonic potassium isotopes. The high measured fluxes up to 1.0x10^11 atoms/s
and low atomic velocities around 33 m/s are well suited for a fast and reliable
3D-MOT loading, a basilar feature for new generation experiments on
Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute atomic samples. We also present a simple
multilevel theoretical model for the calculation of the light-induced force
acting on an atom moving in a MOT. The model gives a good agreement between
predicted and measured flux and velocity values for our 2D-MOT.Comment: Updated references, 1 figure added, 10 pages, 9 figure
Collisional properties of sympathetically cooled K
We report the experimental evidence of the sympathetic cooling of K
with Rb down to 1 K, obtained in a novel tight confining magnetic
trap. This allowed us to perform the first direct measurement of the elastic
cross section of K below 50 K. The result obtained for the triplet
scattering length, Bohr radii, agrees with previous results
derived from photoassociation spectra and from Feshbach spectroscopy of
K.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Quasi 2D Bose-Einstein condensation in an optical lattice
We study the phase transition of a gas of Rb atoms to quantum degeneracy in
the combined potential of a harmonically confining magnetic trap and the
periodic potential of an optical lattice. For high optical lattice potentials
we observe a significant change in the temperature dependency of the population
of the ground state of the system. The experimental results are explained by
the subsequent formation of quasi 2D condensates in the single lattice sites.Comment: 7 pages (including 3 figures
Three dimensional imaging of short pulses
We exploit a slightly noncollinear second-harmonic cross-correlation scheme
to map the 3D space-time intensity distribution of an unknown complex-shaped
ultrashort optical pulse. We show the capability of the technique to
reconstruct both the amplitude and the phase of the field through the coherence
of the nonlinear interaction down to a resolution of 10 m in space and 200
fs in time. This implies that the concept of second-harmonic holography can be
employed down to the sub-ps time scale, and used to discuss the features of the
technique in terms of the reconstructed fields.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure
The Assessment of Soil Quality of Various Age of Land Reclamation After Coal Mining: a Chronosequence Study
The assessment of soil quality index is one of the parameters to evaluate the goal of land reclamation. The research has been done in the various age of soil of PT Adaro Indonesia and natural forest. The research used descriptive explorative method and open field survey. Purposive sampling was used to take the sample in research location that represented the condition of every location. Principal component analysis used to know the main indicator. The main indicator was based on Eigen value >1 and chosen by indicator correlation having the highest weight index. The main indicator chosen was called minimum data set. The result of the research showed that minimum data set consisted of pH, base saturation, bulk density, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, available P, total N, and soil organic carbon. The main indicators contributing to soil quality index value were total N and cation exchange capacity. Variable linear analysis showed that the longer age of land reclamation was followed by the development of soil quality index. Soil quality index in 18 years old soil reclamation (0.651) was higher than that in natural forest (0.575). Soil quality index of > 0.5 is defined as sustainable reclamation
Quantum Breathing of an Impurity in a One-dimensional Bath of Interacting Bosons
By means of time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group (TDMRG) we
are able to follow the real-time dynamics of a single impurity embedded in a
one-dimensional bath of interacting bosons. We focus on the impurity breathing
mode, which is found to be well-described by a single oscillation frequency and
a damping rate. If the impurity is very weakly coupled to the bath, a
Luttinger-liquid description is valid and the impurity suffers an
Abraham-Lorentz radiation-reaction friction. For a large portion of the
explored parameter space, the TDMRG results fall well beyond the
Luttinger-liquid paradigm.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, main text and supplementary material merged in a

Shape of the spatial mode function of photons generated in noncollinear spontaneous parametric downconversion
We show experimentally how noncollinear geometries in spontaneous parametric
downconversion induce ellipticity of the shape of the spatial mode function.
The degree of ellipticity depends on the pump beam width, especially for highly
focused beams. We also discuss the ellipticity induced by the spectrum of the
pump beam
