    Theoretical study on isomerization of α-acids: A DFT calculation

    The α-acids contained in hops are one of the ingredients of beer. The isomerization of α-acids produces iso-α-acids, the main source of bitterness in beer. In this study, the isomerization mechanism of the α-acid, cohumulone, was elucidated by using density functional theory in conjunction with the polarizable continuum model or 3D-RISM integral equation theory of liquids. The calculated reaction diagram is consistent with experimental results; the activation free energy difference between the cis and trans isomers is in good agreement with the experimental estimate. The activation energy difference results from solvation energy. Additionally, a calculation of NMR chemical shifts showed that the proton position of isocohumulone is different from that proposed previously. The effect of Mg²⁺ cation on the isomerization was also investigated. Both the activation and reaction free energy are stabilized by the presence of Mg²⁺, which is consistent with experimental results. Water solvation reduces the activation free energy

    Effects of tongue cleaning on bacterial flora in tongue coating and dental plaque: a crossover study

    BACKGROUND: The effects of tongue cleaning on reconstruction of bacterial flora in dental plaque and tongue coating itself are obscure. We assessed changes in the amounts of total bacteria as well as Fusobacterium nucleatum in tongue coating and dental plaque specimens obtained with and without tongue cleaning. METHODS: We conducted a randomized examiner-blind crossover study using 30 volunteers (average 23.7 ± 3.2 years old) without periodontitis. After dividing randomly into 2 groups, 1 group was instructed to clean the tongue, while the other did not. On days 1 (baseline), 3, and 10, tongue coating and dental plaque samples were collected after recording tongue coating score (Winkel tongue coating index: WTCI). After a washout period of 3 weeks, the same examinations were performed with the subjects allocated to the alternate group. Genomic DNA was purified from the samples and applied to SYBR® Green-based real-time PCR to quantify the amounts of total bacteria and F. nucleatum. RESULTS: After 3 days, the WTCI score recovered to baseline, though the amount of total bacteria in tongue coating was significantly lower as compared to the baseline. In plaque samples, the bacterial amounts on day 3 and 10 were significantly lower than the baseline with and without tongue cleaning. Principal component analysis showed that variations of bacterial amounts in the tongue coating and dental plaque samples were independent from each other. Furthermore, we found a strong association between amounts of total bacteria and F. nucleatum in specimens both. CONCLUSIONS: Tongue cleaning reduced the amount of bacteria in tongue coating. However, the cleaning had no obvious contribution to inhibit dental plaque formation. Furthermore, recovery of the total bacterial amount induced an increase in F. nucleatum in both tongue coating and dental plaque. Thus, it is recommended that tongue cleaning and tooth brushing should both be performed for promoting oral health

    Children’s Perception of Cancer and Survivors After a Cancer Education Program Engaging with Survivors: A Qualitative Study

    Background: In Japan, cancer education utilizing external lecturers are being promoted as part of cancer control measures. The objective of this study was to clarify children’s perceptions of cancer and survivors and their awareness of actions for early prevention and detection of cancer after participating in a cancer education program engaging with survivors.Methods: This study was conducted during January and March 2020, using the qualitative analysis method. Homeroom teachers gave a lesson on cancer to sixth-grade students (n=69) at an elementary school in Japan. Two weeks later, a cancer survivor gave a follow-up class. Then an inductive content analysis was conducted on the content of the post-class reflection worksheets written by students.Results: After analyzing the worksheets of 59 students, they learned that “to reduce the risk of developing cancer, one should lead a healthy lifestyle” and “strive for early detection through cancer screening” through the education program. As things they can do themselves in the future, they listed “encourage family members to get cancer screenings,” “quit smoking,” and “cut back on alcohol.” In addition, children have deepened their understanding of cancer survivors and learned the importance of their own and others’ lives.Conclusion: The results suggested that children gained practical knowledge about cancer through the program and deepened their understanding of cancer and survivors by directly interacting with and listening to survivors

    Association of Pain History and Current Pain With Sagittal Spinal Alignment and Muscle Stiffness and Muscle Mass of the Back Muscles in Middle-aged and Elderly Women

    [Study Design] A cross-sectional study. [Objective] To investigate the association of low back pain history (LBPH) and LBP with sagittal spinal alignment, stiffness assessed using ultrasonic shear wave elastography, and mass of the back muscle in community-dwelling middle-aged and elderly women. [Summary of Background Data] The association of LBPH and LBP with sagittal spinal alignment, stiffness, and mass of the back muscles remains unclear in middle-aged and elderly women. [Participants and Methods] The study comprised 19 asymptomatic middle-aged and elderly women [control (CTR) group], 16 middle-aged and elderly women with LBPH (LBPH group), and 23 middle-aged and elderly women with LBP (LBP group). Sagittal spinal alignment in the standing and prone positions (kyphosis angle in the thoracic spine, lordosis angle in the lumbar spine, and anterior inclination angle in the sacrum) was measured using a Spinal Mouse. The stiffness of the back muscles (lumbar erector spinae and multifidus) in the prone position was measured using ultrasonic shear wave elastography. The mass of the back muscles (thoracic and lumbar erector spinae, lumbar multifidus, and quadratus lumborum) was also measured. [Results] Multiple logistic regression analysis with a forward selection method showed that the stiffness of the lumbar multifidus muscle was a significant and independent factor of LBPH. The stiffness of the lumbar multifidus muscle was significantly higher in the LBPH group than in the CTR group. Multiple logistic regression analysis also indicated that lumbar lordosis angle in the standing position was a significant and independent factor of LBP. The lumbar lordosis angle was significantly smaller in the LBP group than in the CTR group. [Conclusions] Our results suggest that LBPH is associated with increased stiffness of the lumbar multifidus muscle in the prone position, and that LBP is associated with the decreased lumbar lordosis in the standing position in community-dwelling middle-aged and elderly women

    The Hall coefficient in the low-temperature tetragonal phase and the mid-temperature orthorhombic phase of La1.88y_{1.88-y}Yy_ySr0.12_{0.12}CuO4_4 (y=0,0.04y=0, 0.04) single crystals is measured under high magnetic fields up to 9 T in order to investigate the detailed behavior of the transport properties at low temperatures in the stripe phase. When the superconductivity is suppressed by high magnetic fields, the Hall coefficient has negative values in low temperatures, and the temperature region of the negative values spreads as increasing magnetic fields. This result indicates that the Hall coefficient in the stripe phase around x=0.12x=0.12 is a finite negative value, not zero.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. to be published to Physical Review

    Non-commutative geometry of 4-dimensional quantum Hall droplet

    We develop the description of non-commutative geometry of the 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluid's theory proposed recently by Zhang and Hu. The non-commutative structure of fuzzy S4S^{4} appears naturally in this theory. The fuzzy monopole harmonics, which are the essential elements in this non-commutative geometry, are explicitly constructed and their obeying the matrix algebra is obtained. This matrix algebra is associative. We also propose a fusion scheme of the fuzzy monopole harmonics of the coupling system from those of the subsystems, and determine the fusion rule in such fusion scheme. By products, we provide some essential ingredients of the theory of SO(5) angular momentum. In particular, the explicit expression of the coupling coefficients, in the theory of SO(5) angular momentum, are given.     Photon correlation in GaAs self-assembled quantum dots

    We report on photon coincidence measurement in a single GaAs self-assembled quantum dot (QD) using a pulsed excitation light source. At low excitation, when a neutral exciton line was present in the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum, we observed nearly perfect single photon emission from an isolated QD at 670 nm wavelength. For higher excitation, multiple PL lines appeared on the spectra, reflecting the formation of exciton complexes. Cross-correlation functions between these lines showed either bunching or antibunching behavior, depending on whether the relevant emission was from a biexciton cascade or a charged exciton recombination.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Whole-genome sequencing of Theileria parva strains provides insight into parasite migration and diversification in the african continent

    The disease caused by the apicomplexan protozoan parasite Theileria parva, known as East Coast fever or Corridor disease, is one of the most serious cattle diseases in Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa. We performed whole-genome sequencing of nine T. parva strains, including one of the vaccine strains (Kiambu 5), field isolates from Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania, or Rwanda, and two buffalo-derived strains. Comparison with the reference Muguga genome sequence revealed 34 814–121 545 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were more abundant in buffalo-derived strains. High-resolution phylogenetic trees were constructed with selected informative SNPs that allowed the investigation of possible complex recombination events among ancestors of the extant strains. We further analysed the dN/dS ratio (non-synonymous substitutions per non-synonymous site divided by synonymous substitutions per synonymous site) for 4011 coding genes to estimate potential selective pressure. Genes under possible positive selection were identified that may, in turn, assist in the identification of immunogenic proteins or vaccine candidates. This study elucidated the phylogeny of T. parva strains based on genome-wide SNPs analysis with prediction of possible past recombination events, providing insight into the migration, diversification, and evolution of this parasite species in the African continent
