    Static and Dynamic Pressure Distributions in a Short Labyrinth Seal

    As part of a study into turbine blade tip destabilizing forces, a seals test rig was built in which spin rate, circular whirl rate, direction and amplitude of inlet swirl angle, and eccentricity can all be controlled over wide ranges, and measurements can be made at gap Reynolds numbers up to about 2 x 10(exp 4). This facility is described and preliminary data is presented for a one cavity labyrinth seal with a flat, stator mounted land. The impact of different flow coefficients for the first and second knives on the rotordynamic coefficients was found. While this effect is dominant for the direct forces, it should also be incorporated into calculations of cross forces where it has an impact under many conditions

    Trend Breaks and Seasonality in the Yugoslav Black Market for Dollars, 1974-1987

    We estimate a model of the black market premium for dollars in Yugoslavia from 1974-1987. Unlike previous applications of the model, our analysis addresses nonstationarity in the underlying data by allowing for trend breaks. Endogenous structural break tests indicate the presence of breaks closely associated with the death of Tito and changes in laws affecting the operation of the black market. After accounting for these breaks, we find strong support for the underlying model. In addition, we find evidence consistent with the era of increased government involvement in the black market leading to greater volatility of the premium following regime change.

    Nanoparticles are used as electrocatalysts due to their large surface area-to-volume ratios. Most studies of nanoparticle electrocatalysis are performed on collections of particles on a support, which represent ensemble average behavior influenced by spatial distribution of the nanoparticles. Therefore, recent emphasis has been placed on analyzing electrocatalytic behavior of single particles. The focus here is to develop carbon ultramicro- and nanoelectrode platforms for studying the electrocatalytic properties of single metal nanoparticles. Ultramicroelectrodes were prepared using chemical vapor deposition of carbon in pulled quartz capillaries. Electrode diameters were determined by cyclic voltammetry. Electrodes were modified using a soft nitriding technique to enable immobilization of platinum nanoparticles through reduction of H2PtCl6 using NaBH4. Cyclic voltammetry was used to determine the presence of platinum particles through characteristic peaks associated with Pt oxide formation and reduction. Ultimately, these electrodes could be used to analyze single uncapped nanoparticles to understand the electrochemical properties of single nanoparticles
