Color Transparency Effects in Electron Deuteron Interactions at Intermediate Q^2
High momentum transfer electrodisintegration of polarized and unpolarized
deuterium targets, is studied. We show that the importance of final
state interactions-FSI, occuring when a knocked out nucleon interacts with the
other nucleon, depends strongly on the momentum of the spectator nucleon. In
particular, these FSI occur when the essential contributions to the scattering
amplitude arise from internucleon distances . But the absorption
of the high momentum may produce a point like configuration, which
evolves with time. In this case, the final state interactions probe the point
like configuration at the early stage of its evolution. The result is that
significant color transparency effects, which can either enhance or suppress

Evidence for Color Fluctuations in Hadrons from Coherent Nuclear Diffraction}
A QCD-based treatment of projectile size fluctuations is used to compute
inelastic diffractive cross sections for coherent
hadron-nuclear processes. We find that fluctuations near the average size give
the major contribution to the cross section with contribution
from small size configurations.
The computed values of are consistent with the limited
available data. The importance of coherent diffraction studies for a wide range
of projectiles for high energy Fermilab fixed target experiments is emphasized.
The implications of these significant color fluctuations for relativistic heavy

DVCS on spinless nuclear targets in impulse approximation
Within the impulse approximation, we derive expressions for the amplitude of
deeply virtual Compton scattering on spinless nuclei in terms of the
generalized parton distributions of the nucleon. As an application, nuclear

Phase II study of CC-486 (oral azacitidine) in previously treated patients with locally advanced or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma
BACKGROUND: Treatment options are limited for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We report results from a phase II study of CC-486 (oral azacitidine) in advanced NPC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with locally advanced or metastatic NPC and 1-2 prior treatment regimens received CC-486 300 mg daily on days 1-14 of 21-day cycles until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. The first 6 patients of Asian-Pacific Islander (API) ethnicity received a reduced dose of 200 mg to preserve safety and tolerability; if well tolerated, subsequent API patients received CC-486 300 mg. The study could advance to stage 2 if > 4 patients achieved a response. Co-primary end-points were overall response rate (ORR) and progression-free survival (independent review). Key secondary end-points were overall survival and safety. RESULTS: Owing to faster-than-anticipated enrolment, 36 patients, including 13 of API ethnicity, were enrolled; the median age was 54.0 years. Most patients were male (81%) and had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status 64 1 (97%). Among 25 efficacy-evaluable patients, the ORR was 12%; the median progression-free and overall survival were 4.7 and 18.0 months, respectively. The most common grade III/IV treatment-emergent adverse events were neutropenia (33%) and febrile neutropenia (11%). Twenty-one posttreatment deaths, primarily due to progressive disease or disease complications, and 1 on-treatment death (epistaxis, unrelated to study drug) occurred. The study did not advance to stage 2. CONCLUSION: CC-486 did not show sufficient clinical activity to support further development as monotherapy in this patient population. The safety profile of CC-486 in NPC was consistent with that in other solid tumours
Coherent QCD phenomena in the Coherent Pion-Nucleon and Pion-Nucleus Production of Two Jets at High Relative Momenta
We use QCD to compute the cross section for coherent production of a di-jet
(treated as a moving at high relative transverse momentum,). In the target rest frame,the space-time evolution of this reaction is
dominated by the process in which the high component of
the pion wave function is formed before reaching the target. It then interacts
through two gluon exchange. In the approximation of keeping the leading order
in powers of and all orders in
the amplitudes for other processes are
shown to be smaller at least by a power of . The resulting dominant
amplitude is proportional to ( is the fraction
light-cone(+)momentum carried by the quark in the final state) times the skewed
gluon distribution of the target. For the pion scattering by a nuclear target,
this means that at fixed (but ) the nuclear process in which there is only a single interaction is the
most important one to contribute to the reaction. Thus in this limit color
transparency phenomena should occur.These findings are in accord with E971
experiment at FNAL. We also re-examine a potentially important nuclear multiple
scattering correction which is positive and . The
meaning of the signal obtained from the experimental measurement of pion
diffraction into two jets is also critically examined and significant
corrections are identified.We show also that for values of achieved
at fixed target energies, di-jet production by the e.m. field of the nucleus
leads to an insignificant correction which gets more important as

Experimental Critical Current Patterns in Josephson Junction Ladders
We present an experimental and theoretical study of the magnetic field
dependence of the critical current of Josephson junction ladders. At variance
with the well-known case of a one-dimensional (1D) parallel array of Josephson
junctions the magnetic field patterns display a single minimum even for very
low values of the self-inductance parameter . Experiments
performed changing both the geometrical value of the inductance and the
critical current of the junctions show a good agreement with numerical
simulations. We argue that the observed magnetic field patterns are due to a
peculiar mapping between the isotropic Josephson ladder and the 1D parallel
array with the self-inductance parameter .Comment: 4 pages, 4 picture
miR-23~27~24 clusters control effector T cell differentiation and function
Coordinated repression of gene expression by evolutionarily conserved microRNA (miRNA) clusters and paralogs ensures that miRNAs efficiently exert their biological impact. Combining both loss- and gain-of-function genetic approaches, we show that the miR-23~27~24 clusters regulate multiple aspects of T cell biology, particularly helper T (Th) 2 immunity. Low expression of this miRNA family confers proper effector T cell function at both physiological and pathological settings. Further studies in T cells with exaggerated regulation by individual members of the miR-23~27~24 clusters revealed that miR-24 and miR-27 collaboratively limit Th2 responses through targeting IL-4 and GATA3 in both direct and indirect manners. Intriguingly, although overexpression of the entire miR-23 cluster also negatively impacts other Th lineages, enforced expression of miR-24, in contrast to miR-23 and miR-27, actually promotes the differentiation of Th1, Th17, and induced regulatory T cells, implying that under certain conditions, miRNA families can fine tune the biological effects of their regulation by having individual members antagonize rather than cooperate with each other. Together, our results identify a miRNA family with important immunological roles and suggest that tight regulation of miR-23~27~24 clusters in T cells is required to maintain optimal effector function and to prevent aberrant immune responses

Revision and 90-day mortality following hip arthroplasty in patients with inflammatory arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis enrolled in the National Joint Registry for England and Wales
Aim:
To assess revision rates and postoperative mortality in patients undergoing hip arthroplasty (HA) for inflammatory arthritis compared to hip osteoarthritis (OA).
Methods:
The analysis was conducted among cases of HA that were recorded in the National Joint Registry for England and Wales (NJR) between April 2003 and December 2012 and linked to Office for National Statistics mortality records. Procedures were identified where the indication for surgery was listed as seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), other inflammatory arthritis (otherIA), or OA. 5-year revision risk and 90-day postoperative mortality according to indication were compared using Cox regression models adjusted for age, sex, American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) grade, year of operation, implant type, and surgical approach.
Results:
The cohort included 1457 HA procedures conducted for RA, 615 for AS, 1000 for otherIA, and 183,108 for OA. When compared with OA, there was no increased revision risk for any form of inflammatory arthritis (adjusted HRs: RA: 0.93 (0.64–1.35); AS: 1.14 (0.73–1.79); otherIA: 1.08 (0.73–1.59)). Postoperative 90-day mortality was increased for RA when compared with OA (adjusted HR: 2.86 (1.68–4.88)), but not for AS (adjusted HR: 1.56 (0.59–4.18)) or otherIA (adjusted HR: 0.64 (0.16–2.55)).
Conclusions:
The revision risk in HA performed for all types of inflammatory arthritis is similar to that for HA performed for OA. The 3-fold increased risk of 90-day mortality in patients with RA compared with OA highlights the need for active management of associated comorbidities in RA patients during the perioperative period
